This was one of the books I was reading when I had to do a term paper on Indian music. It was pretty informative and gave me a lot of stuff in detail about that certain topic. It's a pretty good reference if you want to learn about the music of northern India. This was one of the books I was reading when I had to do a term paper on Indian music. This book was informative. I've learned about instruments and the world with Indian instruments today, information about the sacred texts, vocal genre of dhrupad, song texts, the nine moods, correlation to nature, teaching and learning music, the tablā, Rāga, drone instruments, and other topics. This is a good book to read if you are starting out with your study of Indian music. This book was informative. This is the first book in my small ethnomusicology study project. During my undergraduate days at Wesleyan, I got plenty of exposure to South Indian music, and even took a class in South Indian rhythm studies. This book provided me with a similar level of exposure to North Indian music. Ruckert explains the basic concepts of rhythm, mode, and structure in North Indian music while also touching on the philosophical and sociological aspects of music in India. Music in North India does an excellent job of making an unfamiliar musical tradition comprehensible and accessible. The accompanying CD of musical examples is also very good and well-integrated with the text.

In the Global Music series. A fairly short summary of North Indian music. After reading four other books on the subject in the past two months, I found it somewhat superficial. Interestingly, the selections on the CD were mainly from genres not covered in the other books, which shows how diverse North Indian music really is.

Excellent, concise, inspired introduction to North Indian Art music. Perhaps best fitted to a music student studying world music.
