I actually started working my way through this about 2005 or 2006, and I am nearly finished the Gold Key issues. They're not very good, especially the first few years. The Italian artist had never seen the show, and could only work off stills, which led to some ridiculous art, like a blond Scotty (no publicity still of James Doohan) or rocket flames shooting out of the Enterprise nacelles. The story quality also ranges from poor to average, although it does improve towards the end of the Gold Key run. I have now read through the first Marvel run, which lasted from December 1979 (the motion picture adaptation) through February 1982 (the last of the 18-issue run). The first Marvel period is way, way better than the Gold Key period, but still not good - too much season 3 quality and not enough of seasons 1 and 2. Part of the problem has to be the lack of a consistent creative team - Martin Pasko wrote maybe half the books, and Dave Cockrum did the pencils on 8 of them, but rarely together, and the other contributors were regularly changed. Also, there are no continuing storylines, every story is resolved within a single issue. There were some nice stories, but overall it was a bit of a jumbled mess. Next up - the first DC run, which started in early 1984.
