The Bear’s Nanny is one of those freebies I picked up with the hope that I would be given a quick and entertaining read. Although it was quick, the entertaining aspect failed to appear for me. This was one of those stories that was not for me. At all. There were plenty of interesting elements that could have come into play with this one, but everything was too quick for me. Astrid walked in on her husband and the nanny, her husband telling her that Astrid was not “hot” and a man needed a younger woman. She should have been suspicious that her husband’s 13-year-old son even needed a nanny! She packed up, drove to the lawyer’s office, and signed the paperwork he quickly prepared for the divorce. Driving always helped her before, but she’s been driving for a week and still sobbing over the betrayal. Lost in her self-pity, Astrid is snapped back to reality when a tire loudly blows out and she wrestles the steering wheel to take her off the deserted road. She doesn’t even know where she is. She looks around at the beautiful forest in sunlight and is filled with a sense of peace. Then she remembers she has no spare tire since her ex took it for his own car. So she pulled up a map on her phone and began walking. Kieran, a ranger, is pacing with his one-year-old crying nephew. He hasn’t even had time to mourn his dead sister, and he has no idea how to care for her child. His bear clan has only single men and no one has experience with children. No one is getting any sleep either, so something has to be done. Nick heads out to town to buy food and maybe find a human who could help with his nephew. The guys think the child is afraid being here with different bears from the clan he was born in. So a human just might calm him. In the grocery store, the baby quiets a little until Kieran’s bear jerks to attention and starts pacing in agitation. The baby screams and cries harder. A woman pushes her cart around the corner and his bear is saying MATE-MATE-MATE. But Kieran sees she is human, and cannot be his mate. She reaches for the crying baby, cuddles and sings softly to him – and Owen falls asleep! Astrid wants to stay here, but she needs a job. But first, she needs a drink, her new way of coping with the pain. Everyone looks at her when she enters the crowded bar. She can’t get over how handsome all the men are in this town. And many of them are checking her out, which she is not used to! The bartender is fantastic and welcoming. She seems to know what Astrid needs without her having to tell her. She mixes the best drink ever… but not alcoholic. And she asks if Astrid needs a temporary job while her car is being fixed. Then she texts Kieran after noticing Astrid looking around the bar to see if he’s there. She told Astrid this town calls to people who need to be here. Maybe she is right. Kieran and the others have been dealing with invaders he now knows are from his sister’s clan. There was a takeover, and the new alpha is sending pack members to get to Owen to kill him since they already got rid of Owen’s parents. And Kieran is struggling knowing Astrid is his mate. The mating ritual alone could kill her. Humans are too frail. But he still thinks of her with their cubs and the family they could create together. And when he came home from work, he stared at Astrid and Owen and his look softened, liking what he sees. Astrid goes to visit Sabrina at the bar and makes two new friends. But 4 strangers burst in and Sarah and Olivia move in front of Astrid, hiding her? Sabrina orders them to leave, but the one his friends call “alpha” approaches Astrid and says she smells of HIM? What does that mean? Sarah begins to actually growl at him! Others in the bar also growl and stand up facing the strangers. They leave, but Astrid can tell that the one called “alpha” will be coming back. What is going on here? Why does this feel like a deadly threat?

(Actual rating: 4.5 stars) The Bear’s Nanny is a fun shifter romance that I didn’t want to put down. First of all, I LOVED how the main characters were middle aged and how Astrid was a curvy woman. It made the story much more enjoyable for me and I wish more stories would focus on older/larger MCs. The romance was very steamy and sweet too. Although it moved fast (which isn’t unusual for shifter romances) I still really enjoyed it. You just can't fight your destiny, even when it is by chance THE BEAR'S NANNY is the first book in the Midlife Shifters of Shadow Falls series. However, all isn't going as swimmingly as it seems. Astrid is Kieran's mate and Astrid is human. Kieran is not allowed to mate with a human and she can't know about shifters. Strange happenings going on in Shadow Falls and human Astrid can't help but feel safe and once she meets Kieran and his nephew she feels wanted...she feels at home. This definitely was a slow burn low on the angst romance .I like that this couple was older and their chemistry was intense. Side characters were quirky, likeable and entertaining. In my opinion, Astrid being the bear's "nanny" wasn't a big part of this story...she is a calming balm for lil Owen....to me it was Kieran coming to terms Strange happenings going on in Shadow Falls and human Astrid can't help but feel safe and once she meets Kieran and his nephew she feels wanted...she feels at home. I loved this new shifter romance from Erin Havoc. Bear shifter Kieran has been given custody of his nephew but is in need of help. Astrid finds herself stranded in the small mountain town when her tire blows out. While waiting for her car to be fixed she becomes Kieran’s nanny. She’s also his mate but Kieran tries to fight their attraction because she is human. I really loved their story. I enjoyed this one so much. The emotions of the characters are so real and relatable. The things they both go through... I am looking forward to more stories about this group! How can one baby cry so loudly? Kieran has taken in his nephew Owen after his sister died. He doesn't have a clue and desperately needs help. Astrid shows up in Shadow Falls after her car breaks down. She's only passing through but could use some extra money. Kieran ends up hiring her as a nanny and decides she's a baby whis I enjoyed this one so much. The emotions of the characters are so real and relatable. The things they both go through...
