    A friend of mine knows the author, and knowing that I love fantasy, especially grimdark fantasy, thought I might enjoy reading this. I have never had high hopes for self-published books and, when browsing the volumes of Amazon books written by novices, I cringe. Often. This book (as well as the first book in the series The Hobgoblin's Herald) is a true tour de force! This book (as well as the first book in the series The Hobgoblin's Herald) is a true tour de force! The writing is controlled, sophisticated, witty and sarcastic, the descriptions are crisp, and the characters and stories are some of the most memorable to date. I won't bother giving you a rundown of the characters or plot, but if you like violent, ruthless and at times funny fantasy, you must read this series.
