I love romance. Actually, a book without one isn’t that interesting to me lately. But I still want a complex plot, world building and interesting characters with some depth to them. And not “I detest” the alien to “fall in love” with it a day later and declare “my undying love” a few days later. Nope.

This romance was very sweet! Our hero is drawn to his mate and is very protective of her, however is isn't grumpy, overbearing, or any of those things we can often see in fated mates books - he's a big teddy bear and I love that. This book is full of action, which is expected when our characters are fighting to survive a Bugpocalypse. Also friends, this is the book where our hero has a unique male organ, which amped my enjoyment wayyy up (and the heroines too - wink, wink). I was totally fascinated by this entertaining post-apocalyptic alien romance & it is a splendid start to a new series. I found the characters to be quite well-developed & interesting. I will admit that the concept of giant flesh eating space bugs has real ick factor for me so it is a testament to the author’s writing ability that I persevered with this story. Honestly, it’s well written and the bugs are spoken about factually without too much gory detail. Still... ick! The male and female lead are amusing and chuckle worthy, even in this dystopian setting and their relationship development is cute. The story is dual POV and I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one. This book perfectly fits the rating of "it was ok." There was nothing particularly good about it. It was just there and I read it and I will completely forget about it in a few days because it was forgettable. It wasn't enjoyable but I didn't hate it. It just exists. ⭐️ The bug apocalypse world building is different. Haven't seen this in sci-fi romances before. ⭐️ Natalie (she's not the protagonist 👀) was intelligent and witty and the best character. ⁉️ I was bored. So bored. The plot is bare bones and completely unoriginal. These space aliens rescuing humans stories need better plots. ⁉️ No chemistry between Alice and Kaj'k. None. It was as exciting as watching two pieces of soggy cardboard try to hump each other. Actually, that would have been more entertaining. ⁉️ Completely lacking of any emotional depth. I felt nothing. I don't care about this world. I don't care about these characters. I especially don't care about the romance. For a romance book, you utterly failed if I don't care about the romance. ⁉️ The heat is non-existent. The sex scenes felt rushed and almost methodical. So dull to read. ⁉️ Nothing much happens. I could summarize the whole thing in a paragraph and get every plot point. ⁉️ I almost DNF'd several times because nothing was holding my interest (except Natalie!). ⁉️ The dialogue was cheesy and sickly sweet at times ⁉️ Alice is one of the most stubbornly idiotic protagonists I've read yet. (Mini rant about Alice being an idiot below.) ⛔️ Alice had TSTL stubbornness. This is where writers try to write a "strong, independent woman" character but fail and end up writing a stupid character who only makes bad decisions (that often put them and others in trouble) because of their bullheaded refusal to do what other characters tell them to do. Bad writers seem to forget stubbornness does not equal strength or independence. This is often a common failing of inexperienced writers (or just bad writers) who don't know how to write complex characters. Readers want complex characters, not stubborn idiot characters. Refusing to do something that is logical and fighting the love interest (view spoiler)[at every other chapter just to obstinate (hide spoiler)] doesn't make a character "strong and independent." It makes them an idiot making idiotic decisions. Thank goodness for Natalie. She was the realistic and reasonable character. The perfect literary foil to Alice's idiocy. (view spoiler)[At the end, when Alice opposed to use the scourge (she literally says it "feels cheap" to use them) to rescue Natalie and Rajiv’k from the military group attacking them, was the height of her just saying things in opposition of others. She has spent the whole book saying her one goal is to protect Natalie at all costs. And now she is like, well, we shouldn't use cheap tricks to save my cousin who I would die to protect. This is out of character for her. Alice wants to make things harder on them because she doesn't want to harm the people out to kill her cousin?!?!? This needed an editor. (hide spoiler)] (End of mini rant.) An observation below. Why am I writing so much about this forgettable book? 🤡 Am I the only one that felt like Lynnea Lee was using the IPB series by Ruby Dixon as a blueprint for some parts of this and got distracted by some of the similarities? Not the world building, but the space aliens and story stuff. Let's check off some obvious similarities of the aliens: 📌 Glowy/bright eyes? ✅ (Sort of.) 📌 Big horns? ✅ 📌 Foot with three toes in front and one toe/heel in the back? ✅ (Sort of? I kinda forgot what the back of the feet are like for the sa'khui) 📌 Skin described as having the texture of leather/suede? ✅ 📌 Purring chests when they meet their fated mates? ✅ 📌 Space alien language has swallowed syllables? ✅ 📌 Claws? ✅ 📌 Hunter love interest thinking he was going to be alone forever before he met his fated mate? ✅ 📌 Needing to bone asap after recognizing the fated mate/resonance? ✅ 📌 Ridges on the joystick? ✅ Similar story stuff: 📌 Vektal/Kaj'k rescuing Georgie/Alice and them (view spoiler)[kinda wandering around afterwards (hide spoiler)] ? ✅ (Maybe? This is a standard sci-fi romance plot.) 📌 Georgie/Alice (view spoiler)[being the one out exploring because the other girls/Natalie are injured (hide spoiler)] ? ✅ 📌 Georgie/Alice (view spoiler)[needing to go back and rescue the other girls/Natalie (hide spoiler)] ? ✅ 📌 The space aliens giving the humans the indigenous food pemmican? ✅ 📌 Next book being about the sassy and opinionated character aka Liz/Natalie? ✅ The similarities were a tiny bit... distracting. You can write about literally anything in science fiction so why do something similar instead of something new? I know Ruby Dixon is not the first for these. I know several other series that share some similarities. But no series has all of these... I'm not deducting any stars for this. There's nothing wrong with this (it is not plagiarism) other than being distracting. It's just something I noticed because it was so obvious. This book felt very bland... It was as if Lynnea Lee was playing it very safe with the romance to not lose any potential readers for this series by making the most mild and dull relationship for the first book. Nothing happened that might make readers go I don't like this relationship. The most safe bet romance relationship between two equally insipid characters. Sweet and low drama romances can work well without being boring. This one didn't. TW: Bugs. The bug aliens are super gross. They're described as not being sentient beings. There's lots of gore and violence and descriptions that get pretty graphic. If you can't handle grossness with bugs, this is not the romance book to read. I almost DNF'd at some points because it was disgusting. I will be reading the second book for my girl Natalie. I hope it is better than the first.

found a new author to enjoy! This was a fun read. I like how the couple interacted with each other and the little slow burn it had. I know some are like me that like their romance off world but this isn’t the world we know. The author still puts human bias for things they don’t know or understand which makes the story more believable

Bugs creep me out, so to read about an Earth invasion of insects had me cringing. Alice is a strong survivor and it takes her a while to realize that the massive alien warriors are not the enemy. The Xarc'n are clone fighters sent to eliminate the bug infestation. They have no women so their sole purpose is to fight the scourge...until they scent their mates. I mean, everything went pretty smoothly; Alice did start accepting Kaj'k early in the story, sex was not the goal, a bit of the sweet "funny business" was romantic, Kaj'k is a big softy, Alice seemed pretty great to me except when she sometimes forgot the actual situation (like when she's upset to use the bugs to call out others) and Natalie also got a stable companion. This is definitely a great sci-fi romance with a loving and oh so cute relationship! I loved how caring and understanding Kaj'k was and it was so cuteeee when he said he wanted to learn how to make Alice agree to desicions like Natalie could make her do!

Of course Alice hs to fight the inevitable but once Natalie is also safe on the shuttle belonging to Kaj'k, Alice starts to learn about the giant warrior and see how devoted he is to keeping her safe. The story progresses through with some light hearted banter and becomes a beautiful love story. I really hope I can read more by this author and definitely more in this series. Highly recommended.

I have mixed thoughts about this book. I loved the details. Everything and everybody was described so thoroughly. I had very vivid images in my mind as I was reading. I actually think the bugs were described a bit more than the humans and aliens. I was waiting for this big showdown and it never happened. A huge buildup and preparation for the “swarm” and it never happened. The book didn’t exactly end on a cliffhanger, more like a HEA for now. Yet Earth's government, too suspicious of the Xarc'n Warriors showing up right after the bugs arrived, refused their offer of help and wouldn't budge on it. Big mistake. When nothing else worked, Earth's government used nuclear warheads on entire cities. Which only hurt their own and did nothing to the bugs. Once infrastructure, power and society fell, the Xarc'n warriors stepped-in to help regardless of the naysayers. By this time it was too late for a quick extermination. The bugs had built nests deep underground, lined them with enough live food to last for year's and multiplied like rabbits. But the Xarc'n Warriors were determined to help, their entire purpose in life was to kill the scourge and they didn't want to lose another planet to them. While fighting the bugs on Earth, the Xarc'n Warriors find compatible females for the first time ever. Giving them hope for a better future and even more motivation to save Earth. These are the stories of individual warriors finding mates and more to life, in what the humans dub the bugapocalypse. The series stays positive and uplifting, never going to deep dark places of despair or ickiness. It's a fleshed out world with vibrant characters, who go on hilarious and sexy adventures. Plenty of kickbutt action and romance. This series is firmly rooted in my top ten (all time) favorite series, up there with Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarian series, Regine Abel's Prime Mating Agency series, Johanna Lindsey's Ly-san-ter series, C.M. Owens' The Wild Ones series, and more(if you havn't read them you're missing out!). Also if you sign up for Lynnea Lee's newsletter you get free books!! Yes I said books- plural lol. I've never gotten so many free books from a talented author, it blows my mind. All books in this series can be read as a standalone (complete HEA) but also has recurring characters & storylines that are best read in order. Due to hilarious shenanigans, a little bit of sailor language and entirely explicit romps (it's an oh so dirty ride) I'd suggest for adult audiences only. This book-Is book 1 in the Xarc'n Warrior series (there's a 0.5 book if you sign up for the authors newsletter). This is Kaj'k & Alice's story. Alice and her cousin Natalie live alone and are doing pretty great compared to others in the bugapocalypse. They made it through the winter but now they need to restock on everything. Natalie's leg doesn't work right anymore (she got sliced by a bug & the toxin numbed her leg) so Alice has to go out foraging for food and supplies alone. That's how she meets Kaj'k, who's a really funny and sweet alien warrior. He's never had a friend much less a mate, the closest he's ever gotten to a companion is fighting alongside other warriors for a brief time. He's been to countless planets and there's never been compatible females or even the slightest urge for him to mate. When he scents Alice it hits him hard like a punch to the gut and he gets a tad excited (huge understatement). He's so tired of being alone with the sole purpose of destroying the scourge day in and day out. Alice doesn't know it yet but she's given him something to fight for. Kaj'k first scented Alice last winter while he was busy fighting the bugs, but she was gone by the time he finished and the snow made it so he couldn't find her afterward. Now it's spring time and luck is on his side- she finally came back to the same store (yes he kept coming back to check). He follows her home that day so he'll never lose her again -but prefers to use the word escort rather than stalk lol. Kaj'k researched "how to get a human female and keep her" by uploading their human internet to his network, and though some of the things he found were disturbing- he's more than happy to try out a few on his Alice- he especially wants to go date. Alice isn't accepting his food or gifts but he'll never give up and is just happy to be in her presence. Until cannibalistic raiders invade her home that is- then he puts away his eager puppy side and brings out the warrior- throwing her over his shoulder and putting her in his ship. Her safety comes first and they will just have to agree to disagree on this one. Summer time is quickly approaching and with it comes the swarming of the bugs. Kaj'k needs to convince Alice to move in with him before that happens. They'll need to be ready to funnel the bugs through an intricate maze of buildings and objects, that way the warriors can pick them off one by one without being overwhelmed. Will he succeed in time? His old style translator doesn't help their communication issues but it sure is funny to watch (until he can replace it.) Quote 1: “You have fire. I like, Little Flame. But bite is foreplay. You say no funny business. Be calm.” Quote 2: "It is dark out, and these are dangerous males. You will stay in the shuttle.”I didn’t let her argue. I left and ordered my shuttle to lock up behind me. She was probably pounding on my shuttle door from the inside right now. My female was feisty. But my shuttle was built to endure more than she could deal out. My angry Little Flame could burn all she wanted in there; she couldn’t be worse than spitter acid."

So when I came across this series I really thought it was going to be like The Galactic Order series. Which, by the way, is very good (most of the books anyway). I was wrong. Yes, we have purple aliens with horns who have come to Earth to save the stupid humans from horrid creatures that have decimated the population, and of course we have the main guy find his mate. But that's sort of where the similarities end. I'm not saying this book was bad, because I did enjoy it...I just think by me compa So when I came across this series I really thought it was going to be like The Galactic Order series. But that's sort of where the similarities end. I'm not saying this book was bad, because I did enjoy it...I just think by me comparing the two series, it simply doesn't hold up. To be fair, it's also probably half as long as those books so of course less time can be spent building things up. When these nasty bugs show up on Earth intent on eating every single living thing, of course the human governments refuse the offered help from the Xarc'n warriors that show up soon after. Because of course, the humans got this. NOT. Before they know it, cities have been completely destroyed and most of the human population either eaten or poisoned and carried off to be eaten later. There are some who have been lucky enough to survive though. Alice and her cousin Natalie are a couple of them. They managed to survive the winter by holding up in a hardware store that they made look like was already ransacked. They even managed to start a vegetable garden. But it's actually not going all that well. Natalie has been poisoned by one of the bugs and can no longer move one of her legs (from my understanding anyway) so she isn't able to help forage for provisions. Leaving it all on Alice's shoulders. Between the bugs and the violent humans gangs, it's getting harder and harder to find food without going into more and more dangerous areas. Lucky for Alice, she's going to find herself with a new protector whether she wants to or not. Kaj'k had scented Alice before the snow fell and immediately was drawn to her. But it took him all the months until spring to find her again. I loved how he tried to woo her with protein bars and flowers at first all because he saw online that females liked receiving gifts. Kaj'k and his brothers are all clones bred for the sole purpose of wiping out these creatures that their ancestors created and lost control of. Fighting and killing them is all he has known, and he's good at it. But when he meets Alice so many things inside of him start to change. And while he has no idea what most of it means, he does know he will never let her go. Despite the fact that Alice (annoyingly) refused any and all help from Kaj'k at first, it really didn't take long at all for her to change her tune. I'm not complaining though, because I hate when the female takes almost the whole book to accept she's the guy's mate. Once she knows that Natalie is safe, Alice easily slips into the safety and comfort she finds in Kaj'k's arms. Now that he has her, Kaj'k has more reason to fight and we see him in action a few times. We eventually get to a place that the Xarc'n are going to make their compound, where they will trap and kill as many of the bugs as they can funnel in with the help of some human men. Not a whole lot happens with that, but that seems to only be because it'll be picked right up in the next book. While I did like this book, and I hands down liked Natalie the most, I'm not going to be jumping into the next book right away even though it's hers. I just didn't like this one enough to justify spending as much as it would cost to get the rest of the series. But I'll definitely be keeping an eye on them if they ever go on sale.

I’m already liking this book , she gave us a good resume of what happened and pah! “I shook my head, and then, realizing that Mr. Big, Tall, and Scary might not understand the gesture, I said, “No, I don’t need any.” There was no way I was going to take gifts from a Xarc’n warrior. It was rumored that they would offer gifts of food to starving women, and if the women took the food, they took the women. No one has ever seen a female Xarc’n alien, and it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to know what they wanted with us” Hahaha oh girl you don’t know the saying? If you’re in hell hug the Devil. And how the hell I pronounce his name ? Kaj’k ? Not even the tongue in my brain ,that can pronounce a lot more idioms than the one in my mouth know how pronounce his name , damn hahahaha so I’ll pronounce how the letters sound in my first language and that’s it . “Presents from your not so secret admirer!” She clapped her hands together like a child on Christmas morning. “This is so exciting.” She peered outside and looked around. “I wonder if he’s still around.” She raised her voice and broadcasted, “Thank you, mister Xarc’n warrior. Alice isn’t rejecting your offers. Really, she isn’t!” HahHa I like Nat she is smart!! Girl don’t look a gift horse’s teeth or something like this , I don’t know the saying in English but in my language is something like this so whatever hahahaha it’s a apocalypse so just accept the gift for gods sake !! “And if your knight in shining loincloth comes to take you away, please ask him to send me a friend” Damn!! I want to read a book about Nat too hahaha “I didn’t calm. Who the hell did he think he was, manhandling me like that? I acted without thinking and bit down on the chest I was smashed up against. “He hissed and grabbed my ass, digging his fingers into my flesh. “You have fire. I like, Little Flame. But bite is foreplay. You say no funny business. Be calm.” F*ck ! Just I think this was sexy like hell ? Damn me and my weird thoughts hahaha you know this book is pretty fast paced with soooo much action , this doesn’t let you get bored ...and this for me is the best hahaha I’m loving the post-apocalyptic world like ...damn bugs ? Are you seriously? This is freaking me out more than zombies , and this is saying a lot . The Xarc’n Warriors are really powerful and interesting, I’m really, really liking this book . So... I just finished and that’s it , a good book with a entreating story , and I can’t wait to read the one about Nat hahahaha seriously I won’t lie I was reading this one but I couldn’t stop thinking what was happening to her and her warrior .

Of course they refused their help and proceeded to bomb all of the large cities thinking they would kill the bugs that way. Total failure! A year later the bugs have moved on to the smaller cities in search of more food, and all of the governments have collapsed. It’s every man and women for themselves. Alice and her cousin Natalie have managed to survive their first winter on their own. Alice goes out every day and forages for any items she can find that will help them survive. She has seen the Xarc’n warriors but everyone is afraid of them because the governments spread rumors that they were the ones that brought the bugs. Kaj’k is a Xarc’n warrior fighting the bugs on earth. The Xarc’n warriors have been genetically altered and their sole purpose is to fight the bugs as they move through the universe searching for new food sources. Kaj’k has seen Alice and has been trying to find where she is hiding. She has awoken the latent mating response in him. None of the warriors knew that was even possible, but apparently the earth females are compatible with the Xarc’n warriors. He has been patrolling the area where he has seen Alice, killing the bugs in that area to keep her safe. He finally finds her again and approaches her in a store. She is afraid of him and she runs, but he follows her back to her hideout. This is a delightful story of Alice and Kaj’ks struggle with their relationship. When their hideout is taken over by hostile human males, they go on the run together and are forced to work together to fight for their survival. I absolutely love this story and can’t wait for the next book in the series. Home run Lynnea!!
