A classic of Civil war history, McPherson’s masterful telling of the period is essential to grasp the patterns of the conflict. He goes through great pains to establish what led to the war, walking the reader through the Mexican American war, bleeding Kansas, and the secession crisis. Truly a masterwork of history, nearly unrivaled in scope and accomplishment.

McPherson is a classic in the pantheon of Civil War histories. What has sustained this one volume history is the breadth and depth of the scholarship contained in this book. McPherson not only beautifully tells the story of the Civil War, he ably explores the reasons behind the war, the multitudinous crosscurrents of political theory that drove this conflict, and he takes the time to describes the cultural forces at work in the Country during this desperate time in our Nation's history. If one is trying to get an bird's eye view of the Civil War along with an in-depth understanding of the how's and why's of this conflict, this is an excellent volume to read. What's more, this volume will cause the reader to desire to read more about this conflict and about the various people, places, and political forces that caused this war to erupt. This volume will also add to one's vocabulary (McPherson's is stellar). Happy reading!

Really long and I had to re-read and re-listen to many sectons to comprehend them. Definitely worth the effort. Many of the 2015-2021 political controversies harken back to the era covered in this book, and I have new prespectives there-on.
