Carson's PTSD puts an incredible strain on his relationship with Amy, finding and keeping a job, and living life in general. Carson manages to control his paranoia to the point he can start a new job as a Private Investigator, but not in time to save his relationship with Amy. The plot really takes off at this point as Carson plunges into his new job and is assigned a pair of difficult investigations. His path and Amy's cross again, and author N. E. Brown really does a good job leaving you guessing until the very end if they resolve their problems. Romance, danger, mystery, and Dallas, Texas in the 70s. What can beat that? Five Stars!

His life’s a mess and life keeps dumping on him, but Carson Chance doesn’t give up. And that’s the lesson here: persistence wins. Intriguing romantic suspense.

To me, the measure of a book is how long do I read it before I put it down. I read Unraveled in one marathon sitting. I frankly can’t remember the last time I did that. Set in the ’70s at the tail-end of the Vietnam war, Unraveled tells the tale of private investigator Carson Chance, Nam vet with a wounded psyche and PTSD. It’s personal with me. I met and married husband #2 right after he came back from that war. Number two was handsome as hell (Picture Burt Reynolds on a bad day) and as confused as author N. E. Brown’s main character. Carson is madly in love with Amy Warren and their relationship is always on a rollercoaster ride just like his vacillating moods. Couple the troubled relationship with Carson’s search for the person who murdered a young woman forced into prostitution who one day showed up on his doorstep looking for drugs. Oh yeah, he’s given another mystery to solve, and in between breakups with Amy, he manages to get the job done. N.E. Brown got the job done too. This is one good book.

Life is going to keep taking shots at Carson Chance, Private Investigator. It’s not like he hasn’t taken enough before the book starts. He’s a Vietnam vet who’s recently seen his house burn to the ground. But he’s grinding his way back with girlfriend, Amy, when things start to fall apart. It starts with a cheap shot from a snooty law student, who steals and abuses Amy. Then his attempt to save a teenaged prostitute goes awry after she is murdered by the nasties who traffic her. But, above all, this is a story of perseverance, written in straightforward prose by author, N.E. Brown. She understands her character, and writes particularly well about Carson’s struggles with PTSD. Unraveled is a humane read for people who appreciate a good story, well told. This is a series worth looking into. Highly recommended with a beer on the porch.

This is the first time I have read any books by Author N.E. Brown. I am glad I started with this book, even though it is Book Two of a two-part series. This story stands alone. I am glad I started with this book, even though it is Book Two of a two-part series. This story stands alone. Our hero, Carson Change, has some flashback issues to his time in Vietnam. Recently discharged from rehab and trying to get his life in order, takes a right turn when his long-time love interest, Amy, doubts him. It was easy to relate to Carson when he recognizes he needs work, friends, and a fresh start. He became an honest man at this point for me. The turning point in Amy and Carson’s relationship was illustrated by the author expertly in this section. Amy approached Eric. “Are you all right? Did you hit Carson, first?” “No, Amy, the guy went wacko and attacked me. I tried to apologize, but he threw me to the floor, and I hit my head. He told me to keep my hands to myself, and if I ever touched you again, he’d really hurt me.” Amy turned to Carson and saw the terror on his face. “Is that what happened, Carson? You were jealous?” As he embarks on the journey to set his life in order. Will his future include Amy? Can Carson dismiss his guilt over not being enough for Amy? These questions plague him as the author characterizes, in detail, the era in North Texas, the struggles of a wounded veteran, and uncertain love built on strong passion. Barriers thrown between this couple make their struggle harder. Though they love one another deeply, the issues are not easily overcome until they must make the tough choices. I recommend this book for those who like excellent character development, a hero you want to succeed, and some great romance. You’ll need to read to the end to find out the sacrifices they must make. If you are like me and started with Book 2, follow me to get Book 1 on your wish list.

Unraveled, NE Brown It's like you know these characters from the beginning. They could be your next door neighbors. Carson Chance faces hurdles many Vietnam vets must navigate. Add to that, he's accused of a murder he didn't commit, and an on-again-off-again relationship with a woman dealing with her own demons, and you have a must-read story. Unraveled is a perfect title—as I experienced Carson's problems along with him, the word kept circling through my head, as it exactly described his life. Carson Chance is good at tracking down and finding the missing or the lost. But he’s never been able to find himself. Chance is a troubled man, a misfit who survived the Vietnam War and came home stricken with nightmares and demons in his head. He has been a private investigator and a good one. But a trip to rehab has cost him his job, his self-esteem, and the woman he loves. Amy is in law school. Chance is virtually homeless. Amy has a bright future. Chance doesn’t have a job. And in his heart, he knows he does not deserve someone as beautiful and talented as Amy. As N.E. Brown writes in Unraveled: Amy was his moral compass. She was the glue that kept him together. He is not the man he was nor the man he should be. He’s adrift on the streets of Dallas during the unpredictable days of the 1970s. And Amy is afraid of being hurt. She has offered him patience and love and understanding, but their relationship is still headed toward a dead end. They live in two different worlds, and those worlds are headed for a collision. Amy runs with a college crowd. Chance is suspected of murder. Amy tells him: “It’s over.” Is it? Chance is finally given back his old job as a private investigator and discovers he still has a knack for finding the lost, whether it’s stolen money or the missing daughter of a Fort Worth millionaire. But will he ever find himself? And can either Chance or Amy move on with their lives if they don’t have each other? The consequences they encounter make this romantic suspense from N. E. Brown a read that will have you holding your breath until the final page.
