First book was really good, second improved it a bit. The third one ran out of steam during the end, but tied a knot nicely on the main plot while still leaving some room for new books in the series. The author really didn't go much into the tech of the world, everything had artificial gravity, weapons were just "phasers" and shields were just percentages. Didn't bother me much though, this was a lot more about the people and what happens in the world, the tech was just a bunch of background stuff First book was really good, second improved it a bit. I liked this. The story arc is satisfying, plenty of twists and cliffhangers too. I think I wanted more science and world-building. The politics of earth and Fleet just didn't ring true enough, yet to dwell on that more would have slowed the action. There is a good focus on the action - likeable and hateful characters - and, of course, a win against impossible odds. My main hanging thread peeve - how did Charles get so different? I liked this. My Book Review Number 197: This review is on The Resistance: The Complete Series (Books 1-3) by Nathan Hystad. This is the first complete series I have read by this author. This is the first complete series I have read by this author. It is composed of Rift (The Resistance Book One), Revenge (The Resistance Book Two) and Return (The Resistance Book Three). It is an exciting and action packed Military Science Fiction series that deals with two competing human factions and First Contact with the biggest threat to humanity from a new alien species proving humans are not alone in the universe. The Rift begins with Grand Admiral Jish Karn trying to keep Earth Fleet’s military space force up to speed and fully equipped for the next alien invasion. Up to now she relied on help from Councilman Jarden Fairbanks who recently disappeared and is now considered by most people to be dead. Grand Admiral Karn is dealing with numerous issues in preparation for the next arrival of the alien threat which occurs like clockwork in the solar system every thirty years since 2415. The next Rift or worm hole in space time will occur on August 2, 2475. Karn is worried the Earth Fleet may not be able to win the coming battle against the more advanced aliens, called Watchers, certain to return. In addition, Karn has secrets only she knows about the new alien species. Without more answers how to deal with the Watchers, the extinction of the human race may result. Several major characters are introduced in Book One including Ace, a homeless kid; Wren Sando, a women prisoner; CD6, a special android guard; Flint Lancaster, a former Earth Fleet pilot and many more lesser characters. It is a very good start to the series with plenty of action, mystery and suspense. Revenge, Book Two revolves around a new planet found beyond the Rift in alien space. Councilman Jarden Fairbanks has taken a new warship through the Rift when it opened in search of a lost colony ship which contained his family many decades ago. With him is Flint Lancaster acting as a pilot on the ship, Ace who is now a fighter pilot for the Earth Fleet, Wren Sando who is a former research scientist and CD6 the android guard with special AI abilities. They find signs of the lost colony on an unknown planet and travel down to the surface to see if there are any survivors. What they find surprises them before some of Jarden’s crew decide to return through the next Rift opening to see what happened to Earth during the last battle. Before her imprisonment for no apparent reason, Wren was working on a deadly virus to kill the enemy aliens. Now she has to complete her work if humans are to have any chance of surviving the alien invasion. By the end of Book Two the group makes it back through the Rift opening to find the battle for Earth still in progress. This story is even more exciting and filled with more action than Book One. Return, Book Three is the conclusion of this series. It opens with a space battle scene where Ace meets up again with his old friend Serina Trone who is in the middle of a space battle with the Watchers whose warships are better armed than the old Earth Fleet. Flint helps turn the battle and prevent more Watcher warships from traveling through the Rift before it closes. Flint finds that the aliens are still battling the Earth Fleet for control of the solar system. The Earth Fleet has also been fighting internally with a terrorist group controlled by a person called Shadow for decades. Currently, the war with the Watchers is at a stalemate. The only way to end the fight is to unleash the new alien virus to kill the Watchers. In the process, Flint is captured by the aliens and a desperate attempt to save him is launched by his friends. The mystery and suspense in Book Three increases to the point where no one is certain of the outcome. I give this series Five Stars because all three books are compelling, full of mystery, suspense, action and plot twists. The story keeps your interest as it develops until the very end. The main characters are likeable and fully developed. The plot is unpredictable and contains a few interesting backstories and several surprising twists along the way. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science and space battle scenes are believable and exciting. I look forward to reading more books from this author in the future. Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author.

I enjoyed this series a lot - read from start to finish in just a few weeks. The character development was rich and made them feel "real". Maybe there could have been more detail in some of the science, but as another reviewer said, it would have made the flow of action less enjoyable. Personally I can't avoid picking apart some details, and the one that bothered me the most (I don't consider this a spoiler because it was mentioned pretty early in the first book) was the timing of the Rift opening. Why would some time/space rift opening coincide with any specific number of earth years? I know some interval had to be picked, but making it happen to the minute (or even the day) 30 years, to the day, just felt contrived to me. Also, the ability of interplanetary spacecraft to easily take off and land on planets like Earth with significant gravity is a tough pill to swallow, as is the ability to shift/jump to another location sometimes without seeming to have had a way to determine the coordinates in 3-D space... well, my wife says I'm too picky about these kind of details so I'm letting them go :-) - I know it's hard to describe technologies that don't exist yet! It was an enjoyable, engaging story. Looking to read more from this author.

The Resistance, Complete series. I gave it 4 stars as I did read it over the course of a week. Now if you are a hard sci fi reader, this probably isnt for you. If you can suspend your science part and just read for the story, then it is a great story. But many holes, how did CD6 become as it did? How did the ships jump around in 3d space, etc. I guess there will be a whole series about this storyline. And with this storyline, there is a whole set of stories to come out, some set in future time, some recapping characters already introduced. But the characters are well defined, the world making is interesting, that colony world has a whole set of books that need writing. The Watchers also are another box set waiting in the wings. and one huge plus, Nathan had not included any gratuitous sex, plenty of violence, but none of those awful bodice ripping episodes that try to explain what we all know about.

No Main Character I have been trying to grasp what it is about The Resistance that didn't quite grab me. It has all of the elements. He writes a chapter about one character, then writes a chapter about another followed by a chapter about another. They are the same story and fit together, but he winds up with no main character to whom I can identify. I'm sure others will find this alternate writing style interesting and perhaps innovative. That's okay.

Space Opera at it's Finest The Watchers are coming through a rift in space that only opens once every 30 years. They are many and they are powerful ... and all of Earth's colonies are targeted. But there are heroes ready to fight. Join Ace, Flint, Wren, CD6, Jarden, & others as humanity rises to face it's most deadly threat. The battles do not go easy and Earth Force is hanging on the edge of destruction for years as this entertaining story offers twists and turns as it reaches it's conclusion. A Bit Too Much Rather than a single cohesive storyline we have, instead, multiple storylines which the author has tried to weave into the final story. It was a valiant effort but the end result remains multiple storylines. There is the occasional crossover connection between character threads, but not enough to change the overall impact. I stopped after the end of the first book because it just did not seem worth the time and effort to continue.

Absolutely Brilliant I’m one who likes to read a book that ends in that book. I decided to give The Resistance: “The Complete Series” a try. Wow, I was not disappointed. What a fantastic story, with many great characters. Actioned packed, great imagination by Nathan Hystad, to write such a riveting story. I have purchased “ The Survivors Box Set 1-6” to see if Nathan can continue with such a great storyline.

Excellent as always. Intriguing loops, ,blasts and revenge. Mix into this space drama human foibles, love and psyche ops. Marvelous timeline, energetic storytelling and a scintillating overview of a future not too far away. The author appears to be one of the warriors retelling his own story. Another time deminision? Nathan when the writing is this edge of the seat good I cannot help.but wonder, were you there? A portal?

Not beverage sci-fi First off, great character development. Nathan does not split his trilogy by chapters but by characters. He allows you to get into each characters head and get a better understanding of them and the story. Second, excellent story development. There is a lot of gray areas so some of the main characters are not your true hero or villain but reside in between. In regards to the story, well developed. It caused me sleep deprivation because my common sense lost to my being too invol Not beverage sci-fi First off, great character development. Maybe the Best Trilogy I've Read Nathan Hystad has created a set of worlds and people/aliens which hold toogether across three novels. His plot lines are tight, with all kinds of surprises along the way. His characters are quite strong and exch different from the rest. I've read many multiple novel stories and have found this one to be amoung the best, if not hands-down the best. [Forgive spelling and typos, pplease. I will correct them when on my PC, not a tablet. Pulp scifi It's entertaining if you don't care about plot holes, clearly dropped storylines, or scientific weakness. Basically if you enjoy most sci-fi tv then you will probably find this good enough. It likely won't make you think about any grand ideas, or even think about the characters. By the way, just about everyone in this humans vs aliens story seems Anglo Saxon and even American. Just an example of the kind of wtf moment you will have reading this. Wonderful series What a great story. I never thought I'd enjoy Science Fiction this much. The story has many characters and a lot of twists and turns. The story is completed at the end with no cliffhangers. I hate those for sure. I'd definitely give this series a try even if you've never read science fiction. I truly think you'll enjoy it. Loved the “Resistance”!! It was a little hard keeping up with who was who in the beginning but it quickly became a lot easier as each character was filled out and became someone you are really interested in. I enjoyed reading this three book series so much more as each book was immediately followed by the next one. Can’t wait to read another book by this author.

Highly entertaining sci-fi series I was fortunate to get the entire series at once. This was a fun adventure in Earth and its colonies of the near future. A great cast of characters. A fun villain or two (no spoilers). Some of the best space battles. And an Android I fell in love with. Recommend!!

Good space opera Hystad is a good writer, he kept the story at a good pace and the action moving. He gave us suspense without talking down to the readers. This is an above average sci-fi book that gave me an enjoyable time reading it. I will continue with the works of this author.

I really liked this series. It wasn't just another futuristic, fight against the aliens, kind of story. There were inner conflicts, adventures, betrayal, love, sorrow, joy and a "who knows what comes next?" feeling. I liked having an android with human feelings and the fact that even though the aliens were the enemy some humans still had compassion for them. Great read! I really liked this series.
