3 'confused' stars That's kind of my reaction to this book - slightly confused and thinking what exactly is going on here. But let's start at the beginning. I'm used to having a dead body or two by page 5 in crime books, so the start of this one was a little slow for my liking. However, the story really picked up around 20 percent. I loved the creepy spooky atmosphere of a small town in the mountains. I was so nervous and curious about how things will turn out. I loved the creepy spooky atmosphere of a small town in the mountains. I was so nervous and curious about how things will turn out. It kind of reminded me of the movie The Skeleton Key. It still gives me chills. You know this feeling when you look over your shoulder from time to time just to be sure that there certainly isn't anybody standing behind you. Well, all this enjoyable creepiness lasted about half of the book and then the big secret was revealed and I was like 'you gotta be kidding me'. It was a lot of like the movie The Village. You know when the ending was just WTF happened? And there was also some of Tarantino's movies vibes. People just dying all around and I stopped giving a fuck who lives and who dies. (I think I cared even less than Loki *evil laugh*) Also, Dora was not enough of a strong main character to hold the weight of the whole book. She was pretty likable but truthfully she didn't do much apart from screaming like a banshee and be useless. I wish that the story would not do such a 180-degree turn because I really liked it to the point when things stopped being creepy and became bizarre. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, I’m really torn on how I feel about this book. In terms of writing I thought it was great. I liked the atmosphere and how sinister and suspenseful it was. I also liked that I had no clue what was going on. I was even prepared to ignore the silliness of it all when it was revealed who most of the townspeople were and what was really happening. Dora had many TSTL moments, as did many other people, but I never disliked her. Dora had many TSTL moments, as did many other people, but I never disliked her. We were with her for majority of the journey, so I wanted her to succeed. I wanted her to redeem some of the silly reactions she had. I wanted way more for her than what she got. That ending… wow. I’m not sure I’ve hated an ending as much as I hate this one. I mean, I’m sure I have, but right now this is all I can think about and it has left me with the worst kind of book hangover. Without giving things away, I’ll just say that I loathed how things went after the scenes at the hospital. I was still with it, even given the bloodbath that was going on until that point. After that I expected a cool twist or some serious justice. Instead we got… what happened. And I hated it. Have I mentioned that yet? So, while I think the writing was great, it felt original, the entire time I felt this foreboding feeling, and I certainly never picked the villain or what was going on, I think the ending spoiled it. Not just what happened in that apartment, but what was insinuated for the future. In Matko’s previous book, The Little Spanish Girl, I loved the surprise of that ending, the way it neatly wrapped things up in such an unexpected, but certainly not unwelcome way. I remember finishing it with a smile. I remember telling people about this crazy surprising book I read. For me, Too Pretty For The Hills was just depressing. I applaud the author on writing such an intricate and different story. I just don’t have the stomach for it apparently.

***3,5*** Writing style is great but first few chapters it was like reading Heidi. Something wasn't right for with the story and I can't put a finger on it,but for thriler fans it's gonna be awsome. Re-read : It's still kind of spooky-bizare twisted- with a speed from zero to 200km/h in flat two seconds, but good spooky feeling. Dora is fearless woman and she takes no BS from nobody, and the end of the story prove us that nothing is what we think it is. ***3,5*** Writing style is great but first few chapters it was like reading Heidi. … but not too pretty for the thrills! :) Another beautiful piece of literature in thriller and suspense genre by a fellow Slovenian author. Just the fact that this is his second book and that he wrote in English is worth another five stars. Let’s keep an eye on him!

Terrible especially the ending I’m deeply sorry that I wasted time reading this crazy book. I’m sorry but it’s the truth. I usually won’t give a review if it’s not too good, but this was so bad I had to leave a review.

This book is definitely a suspenseful mystery, because I didn't see the plot coming at all!! The author gave me unsuspecting chills and heart racing thrills! First thing first - Ales Matko can write. He's also very good at plotting. The book starts slowly. A little too slow for my taste. Then it takes off and it's a wild ride until the end. I'm looking forward to Matko's future writing endeavours. First thing first - Ales Matko can write. He's also very good at plotting. The book starts slowly. A little too slow for my taste. -not for everyone- This is the second novel by this author I've read and I'll read the 3rd, the 4th etc. It should come with a caution though: This book is definitely NOT for everyone! For starters, it doesn't have a fairytale happy ending, there's probably no mass apeal to it, it's sort of crude and raw with a weird bittersweet humor ...Well as a reader who's sick and tired of generic thrillers and mysteries that offer very little originality, 'TPFTH' was a breath of fresh air. -not for everyone- This is the second novel by this author I've read and I'll read the 3rd, the 4th etc. It should come with a caution though: This book is definitely NOT for everyone! This story was mysterious, full of action and drama and an ending you won't see coming. It's not easy for me to be (too) surprised with the plot of a story but this is the second time with the same author that that happened and I am thrilled. It was really a great read and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quick and keeping-me-at-the-edge-of-my-seat kinda mystery/thriller book. Easy 5* read!!! This book is pretty amazing. It always kept me on edge. I didn't know what to expect and the ending shocked me. I certainly didn't expected it. I loved the mystery and anticipation. Dora is brave and really smart. She soon caught up that something shady was happening there. I really reccomend you to read this book! This book is pretty amazing. It always kept me on edge. I don’t know how to rate this book. The story was cool and all. I definitely enjoy reading about people getting killed. I guess I didn’t like how it all went down. I need to remember that authors from abroad has no desire to give the reader warm and fuzzy feelings. I’m still traumatized about reading The Hack by Will Patching.

This was the weirdest book I have ever read. The plot was all over the place. There was no character development. The storyline was completely bizarre. The twists and turns were just weird. The book was in dire need of editing. I actually can’t find anything positive to say about this book. #sorrynotsorry

Good quick read Ending was not what I expected. Lots of twists and turns. I thought the book would end differently. Cliffhanger, hopefully there is another book, but I am not sure I would read it.

Wow! I’m really glad I read this book! I think the author did an amazing job with the characters. And the story did not go the way I thought it was going. Several guesses were wrong! Want to read more by her!!

This book is one of the worst books I have ever read. The main character's actions were unbelievable and the police were portrayed as totally incompetent. The book was an exercise in frustration rather than an enjoyable read. A complete waste of time, unfortunately. This book is one of the worst books I have ever read. What in the blue blazes? Did I just read? This was the worst piece of trash. I didn't pay a cent for it but feel like the author should pay readers for pain and suffering.
