RATING 4.5 STARS Separated is book two in the In Midsummer series by Jessica Frances. I have been so excited to jump into this book. I fell in love with Rocky and Conner in book one, Stranded. Book one was in Conner’s POV. Now, it’s Rocky’s turn. Rocky Green is thirty five years old and is the sheriff of Midsummer. Rocky’s main purpose in life is to keep his ten year old daughter, River, happy and safe. River’s mother left them when she was only four years old, never looking back. Rocky’s main purpose in life is to keep his ten year old daughter, River, happy and safe. River’s mother left them when she was only four years old, never looking back. Rocky has vowed never to let another person break his daughter’s heart like that again. But then Conner came into their lives. Conner Sherwood was just supposed to be passing through Midsummer when he got stranded there due to car problems. But then he met the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen, the town sheriff. Only things got off to a rough start. Rocky refuses to let anyone in to his and his daughter’s lives. He only has casual flings. The chemistry between Conner and Rocky is crazy. But Rocky won’t risk it. But then Conner started getting death threats. “Why is Conner so different? Why has he gotten under my skin in such a way?” Oh my poor Rocky. This man carry’s the weight of the world on his shoulders. He’s a single father, he protects his town, and now has to deal with his growing feelings for Conner. Can he take such a huge leap of faith and let Conner into their lives, knowing that he might leave? When Conner’s life is in danger, Rocky is forced to face his fears. He tried to stay away, but he can’t. We knew from book one that Rocky was the grumpy, growly, serious one. I loved getting into his head. But, I was surprised at what I found. He’s not really grumpy. He just cares so much! He wants his daughter to be happy and struggles constantly with knowing the right thing to do. His duties as Sheriff never stop, he gets called out in the middle of the night and has to find someone to watch River. He cares so much for Conner but fought against it for so long. Once he gives in, though, he’s all in. He’s tormented, though, that he can’t figure out who is threatening this man he is growing so attached to. I’m in love with this little town and the people in it. At the end of Separated, there is a lead in to the next book, Stay. Let me tell you, I think I am MOST excited about this one. If you haven’t read Stranded yet, grab it now. Then you’ll be all ready for Separated. I am obsessed with these two and simply can’t wait to see what comes next! Conner found himself in danger while in town receiving death threats here and there. Together with its town sheriff Rocky, they are on a mission to unravel who is behind this. It's good to be inside the head of Rocky Green. Funny, in Stranded I was more sympathizing with Conner because I just felt heart-broken for him. Now reading this in Rocky's voice I realized what he experienced was really hard. It was not easy for him to easily commit and his reasons are valid. Also, knowing what these two people went through together in the first book made the romance here much rewarding. It felt homey. It was domestic. Just the thought of them eating together and bonding with little River made my heart to flutter. Tiny part of me wished that the love triangle kind of thrived because honestly it has potential. Lastly, the mystery here was acceptable until it wasn't. I'm still giving it a passing grade. How it was resolved was a bit lackluster. Maybe I was expecting way too much? I think yes. It gave me Pretty Little Liars vibe with all the death threats and the fact that this story is within a small town. Overall, this book is fun, light, and quite steamy too. Even though there was only one steamy scene but you know what I'll take it. I hoped for a good romance when I started this and thankfully that's what I got. I'm closing this book with butterflies here in my belly!

Their chemistry is HOT and I love their conversatons. This book also has a mystery since it seems as if poor Conner is the target again of a crazy person who does not want him to stay in Midsummer. I’m really enjoying this series and will absolutely be reading book 3 but for now I have several other books to read so I will take a short pause from it

I liked Rocky's POV better than Conner's, I must admit. The author managed to redeem him in my eyes after I read Rocky's inner thoughts and fears, what he held most dear and what life changes brought him to this point in life. That does not mean there ever was an excuse to treat Conner without respect. I liked that Rocky acknowledged his mistakes, owned up to them and simply apologized. I liked the domestic moments they had, friends that helped him and of course Rocky and Conner getting very close and personal. The pace was steady, the suspense was mild with a bit of investigating. I wished that Rocky figured out the culprit on his own, but Conner made it there first. That was an interesting side plot. Overall, the story was good and I enjoyed reading it. The little twist in the end was rather well placed and finished the story on a high note.

I have been giving this book review a lot of thought. At first, yes, I was waiting for my book friends to catch up as we all were gifted early ARCs. Then we discuss as book friends often do. So what this story delivers is a grumpy, single-dad not looking for a relationship but like who can resist the funny & charming Conner. The answer is No One Can. Throw in an adorable slightly early to the tweens 10-year old River and it's a reading gem for your TBR. But I did miss some of the humor and giggles in book 1. After thinking about it, really it has to do with the POV. Conner is far less Mr Serious, has an awesome BBF, Love, what I fell in love with. And Rocky is none of those things. He is serious, has a serious job, takes his protection of those he loves seriously. Get my drift - he is serious. So the tone of the book is on the serious side. And perfect because Rocky is serious. So, maybe my reader expectation was higher. But seriously, I'm belaboring what is a .5 star for me. So back to what I loved in this installment. I loved we saw more origin of the town of Midsummer, more of its traditions and families from the POV of a hometown boy. Ms Frances brought back another mystery to solve and new connections to form. The story pacing was fab and allowed me to read in a day. I guessed one twist - and did a happy dance when I was found right. Which makes me SUPER anxious to read book 3. Recommend: Read it Rating: 4.5 Stars

Rocky decided he couldn’t trust his heart to Connor so he broke their (whatever it was) up. Just because he trying to be an adult and a good dad doesn’t mean he’s smart. Connor is just as confused as Rocky and at a loss as to what to do. When Connor starts getting death threats and the beloved Lemon gets vandalized, Rocky knows he has to step up and protect his man. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED!!! Okay, in book one, a grumpy and growly Sheriff Rocky Green was a sexy and tingle-inducing thing. One that leaves a huge smile on your face and makes your heart beat a little bit faster. But now, in book two...a grumpy and growly Sheriff Green with some JEALOUSY mixed in?!? BE. STILL. MY. GIRLY PARTS. He cares, and he cares A LOT. But all Rocky wants is a fling. Conner wants a relationship. But the practical side of him knows it can’t work. GIRLY PARTS. He cares, and he cares A LOT. But all Rocky wants is a fling. Conner wants a relationship. But the practical side of him knows it can’t work. Conner is leaving Midsummer one day, he can’t let his daughter, River, get close only to have her heart broken when he leaves. He just can’t do that to her. BUT... he finally comes to his senses. He sees how good it could be. He cannot sit back and watch Conner move on without him. Conner is definitely worth the risk. There’s also a new mystery in town. Death threats are being made to Conner. Rocky can’t seem to find any clues as to who is sending those threats. And it’s frustrating him to no end because he likes to be in control, to fix things, and protect those he cares for. Rocky the Super Grump - aka Rocky the super sexy and lovable and caring and protective and hot tottie sheriff, who’s an amazing father, is the voice of this book. The swooning is strong with this one. It was so awesome to get inside his head and know where his heart and feelings are at. And just like the first book, I loved, loved, loved this one! More of those FEELS come rushing back with each turn of the page. More sizzles in the bedroom and more warm fuzzies to make me feel happy. I didn’t think I could love Rocky more than I did in the first book. I was wrong. As this saga continues, past characters are back... some of the lovable ones and some of the ones who are easy to hate. At the end, the mystery is solved, and we’re left with quite the tease for book 3. Have you seen the cover yet?! This was another quality story in this series with a perfect set-up for the next book. Can’t wait!

I had already read and really liked Stranded and voiced how much I needed to see Rocky's POV. Boy am I glad I got it. He was such a great character to get inside his head. He really internalizes alot. Every thought and feeling had so much behind it that you can only see by being right in there with him. He is still the strong and silent type, but we got to see behind the curtain. It was a shame to miss the camaraderie of Love and Conner. This book is the continuation of the story of Rocky and Conner. Rocky is the sheriff of Midsummer, who is a single father to a young daughter named River. Conner is in Midsummer to create a social media presence for a small town in need of more tourists to keep afloat. Conner and Rocky were drawn together in the first book, but Rocky pulled away, saying he didn't want a relationship. Rocky feels he has to focus solely on his town and his daughter, and that Conner will only leave anyway when his job is done. At least this is what Rocky tells himself. But River has already formed a bond with Conner, and Rocky can't stop thinking about him. When Conner starts receiving attention from a famous actor who has a house nearby, and then starts receiving death threats, Rocky can't deny how he feels anymore. He becomes extremely protective of Conner, and they have a very sweet scene where Rocky goes over to where Conner is staying simply to wrap him in his arms and make him feel safe so he can finally get some sleep. Rocky and Conner make a great couple, and Rocky, Conner, and River make a very sweet family unit. I found myself very invested in all three of them. The small town setting really comes alive, and there are some good supporting characters. As the death threats escalate, they bring a lot of tension to the story and make Rocky's protective side really come out. The only thing I found lacking was the solution to the mystery of the death threats. It was so out of left field that it just didn't give me that satisfied feeling I was hoping for. That said, the relationships kept this book as a read I really did enjoy, and I would like to read the other books in the series as they come out to continue to see these relationships develop.

New narrator! Hmm XD jk I liked this book but I had a similar problem as I've had with the first book- da beginning. But I've figured out why it takes me a moment to get used to the story. Also, I'm usually not a fan of kid fics so to speak but I think River's character is very well done and she doesn't feel to childish or too adult like if you know what I mean. Also was sort of imagining the low key feud/rivalry between the two rows here to be like Pawnee and Eagletown from Parks and Recreation XD Going to read the next book!

He already gives it all to his adorable daughter, River, and he's scared to give it to a man who would then have the power to hurt not just him, but River too. And therein lay the problem, why he comes across as serious and grumpy, because he worries a lot and has a ton on his shoulders. He's not only the sheriff and in charge of protecting his town, but he has a daughter he is fiercely protective of. But along comes Conner with his sweet, sunny personality, and Rocky is drawn to him and can't stay away from him, really can't help but fall hard for the man who brings light and love to his and River's world. And things were good between them once they figured that out, and this of course means something drama llama is bound to happen, and it did, in the form of a whoa cliffhanger. Sigh... Rocky has been clear that he wants casual... he doesn't date people from the town. He's the Sheriff and he has a daughter so he feels as though he hasn't enough time for more from someone. As the two characters struggle with. how they fit... or IF they fit into one another's lives Connor begins to experience some homophobia. It seems out-of-place in the small town and although there are a few suspects it's not clear what the motivation is. This book is a fast-read, the romance is sweet even if the two men got off to a rocky (forgive the pun) start in book one. I really like the relationship between Connor and Rocky's daughter, River. (Yes, all the characters have great names, Rocky, River, Love... it's awesome). The mystery of who is making Connor's life so dangerous becomes more and more clear as the novel progresses. Then just as the two men are beginning to understand how they might be able to be together, there's a new surprise. Nope, not spoiling it! Fun, fast read... perfect for a summer beach read! Can't wait for the next book int he series.

Book Two is better than Book One and I loved Stranded! Separated is told by Rocky’s point of view and as much as he may try to deny it, he has it bad for Conner. (laugh) Jessica Frances gives us another mystery to solve and I did not see the perpetrator in this one at all. I did not even get a hint. I want to reread the book and see what I missed (laugh). I can also see crumbs for possible future crimes as some people in Midsummer might have some issues and maybe Paxton too. I will say that I did Book Two is better than Book One and I loved Stranded! This is not a situation that is cleared up in a book or even two as anyone who has been in this situation knows. I am glad that Frances is writing about this topic in a realistic fashion. I love River and find her hilarious. She is one of my favorite characters. The heat between Rocky and Conner is another facet I love. It is undeniable and it is talked about with honesty. The conversation between Rocky and River about Connor was awesome. Conner and River’s relationship is great to read. I hope this family becomes a continuous mystery series because I love reading about them! I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

When I first started reading, I worried I wouldn't like it as much as the first. No need to worry though, cuz it was great. These characters have captured my heart. Rocky, River, and Connor are such a wonderful unit and I can't wait to see more of their story and watch them become a real family (though I think they already are even if they don't acknowledge it). The mystery is complex enough without overpowering the story of the characters' relationships, which I love. Book 2- The relationship between Rocky and Conner can be, well, rocky. The sheriff can be grumpy and jealous. He doesn’t need to be- Conner is hooked, even if he doesn’t know it yet. We still have the simple charm of Midsummer. The attempted kidnapping and murders add plenty of punch. Conner has been offered a temporary job in town, so it sounds like he might want to stay. What more could happen? Tune in next time..

Loved book 2! Excited for books 3 and 4. I enjoyed being able to hear inside Rocky’s thoughts for once - he’s a very caring person despite the gruff exterior.

Jessica Frances did not disappoint and this one was everything I could I have wanted – and then more! Separated is the second installment of the series, In Midsummer, by Jessica Frances. Whilst Stranded followed Conner and his adventures in Midsummer, this time around we are treated to Rocky’s point of view. We still got some steamy M/M romance with a side of mystery, but we also got to learn more about what has shaped our gruff sheriff into someone who claims he doesn’t “have time for a relationship”. “As much as I like Conner, I don’t want to be a reason he gives up on his dream. I don’t want to be someone left behind again when he continues with his plans.” This time around Rocky’s focus is forced to shift back to Conner when he starts receiving death threats, especially once they start to take a more serious turn and Conner’s life is put in danger. Despite his reservations about letting Conner into both his and his daughter River’s lives, when he learns that Conner is having trouble sleeping he steps up and goes into protective mode to help keep Conner safe. I loved getting to see just how much Rocky cares about the people that are important to him, he just maybe doesn’t do the best job expressing it. “I had some serious considerations of what my future could look like if Conner stayed. He fits with River and me. He could become part of our everyday lives so easily.” As with the first book, this one ends with another plot twist thrown in to create havoc in Rocky and Conner’s lives. This one left me laughing and looking forward to the adventures still to come for this pair. Another fantastic book, I’m very much looking forward to the next one! **ARC provided for an honest review**

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m obsessed with this series! I read the first book, Stranded, in one day and did the same thing with Separated! I just couldn’t put it down. I loved that this book is from Rocky’s POV, I so love this broody, stubborn man! I really feel invested in Conner and Rocky (and River too) and their story. In this book Rocky is dealing with his feelings for Conner, regretting his decision to not give it a chance at ‘more’ with Conner. But once Conner starts receiving threats, he steps up big time and not just because he’s the town sheriff, he feels the need to protect Conner. Along the way, he also starts to realize what life would feel like without him and how important Conner is to him, and his daughter. He just has to decide if he’s willing to risk his heart. There are some great twists and turns in this book, it definitely kept me on my toes. I loved seeing the vulnerable side of Rocky as he figures things out. He’s such a softy for his daughter, so protective and loving, it just melts my heart. I also love his protectiveness towards Conner, the whole sleeping situation thing just made me melt. I also love the mystery side of this story as well, trying to figure out who is after Conner and why! There’s also a great twist at the end that had me on the edge and wanting MORE RIGHT THIS MINUTE! I really love this story, as I said I’m completely invested in and rooting for Conner and Rocky. This series is definitely a favorite of mine so far this year!

This is a story with some ongoing mysteries, a romance, and plenty of humor. Overall, Connor and Rocky are a delightful couple, who are perfect for one another but first they have some obstacles in their way. I definitely am enjoying the In Midsummer series. The writing is great, fast paced with some superb characters. Separated is another wonderful story in this series.

After being left hanging at the end of the first book in this series, this time around I was dying to drop everything and get started straight away. Excellent Follow-up! From my point of you, I found this second book to be as intriguing as the first. Told from the POV of the sheriff, I got to read the internal narration of him trying hard to be everything to everyone. The mystery ramps up, but I believe there is more going on than what has been suggested in these 2 books so far. Okay, now I can say I love Rocky. Totally warmed up to him in this book. He is such a dynamic, complicated character, which explains why he was so hot and cold in the first book. Again, this book was filled with crime and mystery. Poor Conner just can't get a break. However, there is a lot of hot and heavy romance that is pretty steamy. Okay, now I can say I love Rocky. I liked this book better than book one, but there are still a couple of factors from the first book that are lingering which will need to improve or go away for this series to fully improve. For example, the deputy who moved to the next town over is questioned in a scene and still being a jerk. This book picks up where book one left off and therefore should not be read as a standalone. Rocky is better in this book…not as much of a jerk. He still waffles quite a bit on starting a relationship with Conner but thankfully he makes a decision quickly. We see a bit more of his personality, possibly because this is from his point of view, possibly because he’s opening up a bit for Conner. I like them together when all the BS is stripped away. The threat against Conner was a bit of a stretch for me. The crimes committed far outweighed the payoff for the mastermind of the scheme and the accomplices gave up way too easily in my opinion. Rocky’s best friend Ty has some weirdness left unanswered. Hopefully, we’ll get some resolution for his behavior in the next book. We’re left with a major shock at the end of the book which is a little bit of a cliffhanger. I’m very interested to see how things unravel in book three.
