I bought this book for research, because I wanted to know the proper names, materials, safety aspects and history of the practice. For that, this book rocks. I do think a live demonstration would be better for anyone who wants to try it, but that may be because I'm not too good with the spatial relations thing in 2-D. Reading “The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage” was almost like being at Midori’s workshop once again, where rather than teaching the technical aspects of knot-work she demonstrates the dynamics of the scene itself. In the book Midori talks about her personal history with rope bondage, the visual aesthetics of shibari including symmetry, tension, and balance, as well as introduces the reader to a brief history of Japanese bondage. She covers safety elements and aftercare as well as explains the various types of rope and what they are best suited for. Her focus is not on technical skills but rather showing how bondage can be accomplished by a novice. Any boy scout can learn to tie intricate knots and there are many books on that, but very few people can show effectively the dynamics of a scene like Midori can, that left my friend Kate a pile of wet, hot, quivering mush afterward. If you haven’t had a chance to see one of Midori’s excellent bondage workshops I highly recommend this book. It is a great introduction for beginners and I know many so-called “experts” in my BDSM community who would benefit from learning the dynamics of a scene as well. For someone like me who has had the advantage of seeing Midori live, this book is a great reminder of all the techniques that are taught in her workshop (many that I had forgotten) and may inspire you to take up your rope again and begin practicing.

Very artistic. A few beautiful photographs, wide margins, heavy paper. A long introductory section. Not many ties. Lots of black and white line art for the instructions.

Well, this is just a great coffee table book, perfect for grandma's 80th birthday or to get that new Japanese co-worker. I guess I'll also state that I got this book equally because I would like to learn the techniques for artistic purposes (some casual rope bondage during the underwear ride, or even just going out) as well as for the intended ones. This book fits in a biiiiit better for the later reasons, but they do cover some aesthetic principals, so it's all good. In all seriousness, this is a very nice book and it would also be a pretty great coffee table book if you can get away with it. With these sorts of hands-on things, it is better to go to in-person events, but there's a lot of beginner knowledge in here that would give a bit more confidence before your first rope meeting. I don't think this is a necessary purchase for rope enthusiasts just because there is such a wealth of knowledge on the internet, and this only really has a few basic fundamental techniques (with some lovely photos and detailed instructions), but it covers its bases well and even has some nice readings for us awkward beginners.

Midori's approach to rope bondage is unabashedly sexual. The description of how a scene is constructed, located near the beginning of the book, is nearly pornographic in its attention to the participants' sexual response. I purchased this book based on Midori's reputation as a rope educator, but it lacked instructions for basic, foundational ties. When I grabbed it to double-check how to finish a double-column tie, for instance, I was disappointed. That tie was not included in the book. This book might have some value for allosexuals who are trying to entice a partner into trying rope bondage. For those who are looking to build skills rather than arousal, I suggest looking for a different book.

This book was the first on the topic of Japanese Bondage for a curious American audience, and it's staggering to see how enthusiasm for Shibari has exploded since Midori's book was first published, almost twenty years ago. This is a book that will explain the how's, but also the why's. It's foundational, for anyone who wants to dig into the topic of Shibari. Highly recommended. BDSM provacateur and teacher Midori showcases simple kinbaku/shibari Japanese rope bondage techniques in this stylish reference. Filled with pretty photos of burlesque performer Dita Von Teese, this is almost more like an art photography book or memento on "getting started with bondage", but it does showcase some popular rope ties and knots that can be handy. I recommend this book to anyone curious about basic bondage. BDSM provacateur and teacher Midori showcases simple kinbaku/shibari Japanese rope bondage techniques in this stylish reference. Midori is a rope guru & this book lives up to her reputation. She includes a brief history of rope bondage, an imaginary scene which highlights aspects of safe & consensual play, information on choosing and treating rope, and step by step instructions for different techniques with black and white illustrations. It's pretty enough to be a coffee table book and useful enough to be a bedside table book. Midori is a rope guru & this book lives up to her reputation. A good guide to the uninitiated. A fun romp for those who are familiar with the art of Japanese rope bondage. It will make you want to run to Twisted Monks site and buy some (more) hemp. The photography alone makes it a worthwhile purchase.

Beautifully written. The author went up and beyond at the book launch / workshop. She was very careful to bring the cultural history and make non-Japanese people conscious of the cultural appropriation component. The step-by-step diagrams are awesome and very easy to follow.
