‘Family is important“ Cassius hadn’t had a very good life. Financially he had, but he had no family and few friends. He used people as he had been used. The only person he had genuinely cared about was his governess and she was taken from him by his guardian. What will she do with this “valuable book” that might turn their fortunes around again? Cass is attracted to Milly, but she’s afraid of the strings attached. But her naïveté is breathtaking to the rogue who has decided he’d rather rescue her than destroy her brother. When Susanna is taken against her will by another, Cassius goes after him and the marriage of convenience he and Milly have becomes a love match as they give into their passions:”We will never be like other couples, will we?” Milly asked. “This will not be like those fantastical stories one reads in books, the tales of castles and princes rescuing maidens. This will be different, won’t it? This is the kind of book I’d love to see a sequel of, say, 30 years after the story ends we look in on the Duke and Duchess. I think Milly might keep things interesting as their love deepens. I know Pi want it to because these two after all they’d been through certainly deserve it. Another splendid Deborah Wilson story. Highly Recommended 4/5 “

I have enjoyed reading this entire series, which has been very dark at times, & this book brought forth more darkness in our hero. Once again though, Ms Wilson's writing abilities found a creative solution of finding a lady to bring him out of the dark in to her light. Our heroine, Miss Mildred "Milly" Parker, is a brave, family-loving who has set herself up to save her family from poverty - she now has the most sought after book in England & she uses an item in the book to blackmail/steal a small fortune from the most powerful man in England. Our dark hero, Cassius Hayes, the Duke of Van Dero, has only one plan in mind & that is to teach Miss Parker a lesson - it was not about the money but stealing from him would have to be atoned for to prove you can't cross Van Dero & get away with it. The Duke is viewed as a hard, rich duke on the outside but inside, the world he grew up in, is a dark, lonely existence. Milly is pulled by Cassius & the entries in the book in to the dark side of society that she never knew or believed existed. Milly begins to see where Van Dero's darkness is stemming from & is finding him more & more attractive. Van Dero, in turn, is softening toward Milly & enjoys her company & understanding she has towards him. Can a lady fall in love with a dark villain - can she break the wall around his heart & bring them both to the light? I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

Cassius Hiller, the new Duke of Can Dero, was one of those orphans, and as a result is a damaged man, unable to feel, or even display many emotions other than occasional anger. After his parent’s death at a young age, he was first shuffled among relatives who did not want him until one of them discovered he could fight. So at the age of 7, he was set to fighting other boys as others gambled on the outcome. This continued until he was 16 when he was finally able to break free from this form of slavery, along with 2 other friends. Cassius has been clearing out dens of iniquity since assuming the Duke’s mantle. As we saw with the Lost Lords of London, when Cassius escapes his slavery, he has quite an adjustment to make to be able to love again. This story relates to the Valiant series in that it picks up the story with the new Duke if Van Dero, Cassius Hiller. Milly Parker and her sister Susannah and brother Walter, are nearly starving due to the gambling debts of first their father, and now the brother himself. On the verge of having to sell themselves in order to survive, Milly (a virtuous young woman) catches the eye of the Duke. How will Cassius be able to help Milly and her family? Will he ever feel and display love again? What will happen when he discovers the dark secrets of the old Duke of Van Dero? Well written story with well developed characters. Our Hero is Cassius Hiller, the new Duke of Can Dero, the antithesis of the previous Duke. He cleans out dens of iniquity, righting wrongs done by the powerful upon the weak, but making little headway in healing his own emotional scars. Milly Parker, our heroine, is a virtuous young woman, with enough heart to help Cassius remake his. Clean, romantic, with a HEA—a good way to begin sweeping up the mess the old Duke left behind.

This is the first time I am reading about an antihero. I read what Webster’s said "a protagonist or notable figure who is conspicuously lacking in heroic qualities". However, Cassius, the current Duke of Van Dero despite his stunted emotional growth, he is a man of high intelligence, educated and lived in a black and white world. He grew up without anyone caring for him or loving him. At the age of seven those who were to care and protect him started him in an illegal life or death path. He grew up without anyone caring for him or loving him. At the age of seven those who were to care and protect him started him in an illegal life or death path. It never left him and his soul was as dark as night. Even though he was righting some wrongs it was not without serious complications and consequences. That changed when he first laid eyes on Miss Milly Parker. Her family was impoverished and yet she maintained her grace and dignity worthy of any lady of the ton. This story ties into the "Lost Lord" series as Cassius was introduced in the previous book. The Lords were looking for the "Book of Affairs" that belonged to the former Duke Van Dero. This book contained information that would ruin the lives of any name contained therein. The names were of the extremely powerful of England to the lowliest of men. It listed their sins. Milly became aware of the book because her younger sister had found it. She confiscated it immediately. She realized how dangerous it was. What she was going to do with it was another question. A very exciting book. I could not put it down. A thrilling unpredictable story of who and what Cassius was and how Milly fit into his life and he in hers. I highly recommend this book.

I realize most of the men in this series are anti-heroes, but Cassius somehow seems even worse than the rest of them. There is something very endearing about him despite his ruthless bearing. Milly is interesting, with her almost unwilling attraction to the darkness in him. Her character is possibly even more transformed than his during the course of the story, which is surprising because, at first glance, this would seem to be a story of the positive transformational powers of love. In fact, she is transformed into something more calculating than what she was before, someone more willing to face the darkness of those around her and not offer sympathy for those beyond redemption. She's better for it, but she no longer has the innocence that Cass seemed to find so appealing. He seems to love her even more for that, and the fact that he is able to recognize and give voice to his love is a major development itself. In the end, neither seems to have a choice about how they feel for one another and it's encouraging because it means there may be the perfect person out there for everyone, even those who seem completely unlovable.

Compelling, suspenseful and romantic are all adjectives to describe this well-written book. As with many other novels by this writer, the theme of the story is somewhat dark as it deals with the underbelly of Regency society, however, there are redeeming features to what could otherwise have been a tragic novel. Cassius, Duke of Van Dero has inherited the title, but there is little to commend him as he finds he has trouble relating to society, given his violent and disturbing past. Because of the Van Dero name and also the missing Book of Affairs, most people fear him due to his cold and unforgiving nature. Whilst Mildred Parker is drawn to him, she makes a grave mistake and it is only when her brother has to pay for putting his family at risk, that Mildred begins to understand the implications of her error. One can feel for Cassius as life has turned him into an unfeeling but powerful man. The lack of warmth in his life doesn't preclude him from recognising it in others and seeing the effect of his actions on Mildred breaks down some of the barriers in his heart. It takes every ounce of Mildred's courage to put aside her own fear and strive to begin to understand her husband. This book is part of a series and although we meet up with some old friends, it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a successful close.

Built for power we're trained for power I will admit I enjoyed Cass's story and I almost thought it was better Clive or Garrett books. You will get a better understanding and what made cast man he is today and you will find out the circumstances of why holding the Book of Secrets is the ultimate power play. There was enough intrigue, secrets, revenge or retribution and there will be a loss of Innocence and that may be the ultimate price but who's willing to pay that price. Because the one thing that makes her shy away is the one thing she will call upon from him and will they ever find their way back to each other after he does it. Kudos to the author for another well-written book.

We have seen all the Lost Lords find true love now we come to another effected by ‘the book’ and finding true love. Cass doesn’t understand love as he has had such a bad upbringing, but Milly is the one to crack his hard exterior. Many twists and turns, loved it can’t wait for the next.

3.5⭐⭐⭐⭐ whilst not my favourite in this series, it was still highly enjoyable and it was good to know what had happened to 'The Book'. It was definitely a lesson for Susanna and Milky in what terrible things happen when you read and mess with things you shouldn't. I love this series, but it seems that our hero's are becoming powerful men who deal with life the only way they know how. They get what they want by taking without asking. Each book I read by Deborah Wilson impresses me and I can't wait for the next one. But this book, this book was amazing! Milly and Cass earned a spot in my heart and Ms Wilson will have to reach deep to come up with a better couple. This book has all the feels and Ms Wilson makes sure you feel whatever the characters are feeling. Fantastic story telling, Deborah! What a rollercoaster story! This story kept me up all night. The hero was definitely a flawed man, but had a heart that longer for love. His story was hard to see,, but his fascination with the lovely Milly was to be his lifesaver. Molly had come to hard times and her love for her fami!y took her on the path to meet the man who was to be her destiny. Wonderful reading!

The plot was well written and well planned which made the plot flow smoothly from page to page and the characters were written with such great detail and depth that I remained totally captivated as I turned each and every page until the very end!

A little dark A man inherits a Dukedom from a cousin. The cousin was a nasty man who recorded things in a book and used it to blackmail whoever he found had done something or had a secret. Nobody knew where this book was hidden.

I felt sad for what Cass went through and I can see how he couldn’t let his feeling out. He was a broken man but a strong one. Milly has a kind heart and Cass has to make her his. This was a very good story.

Forced Marriage. The new Duke of van Dero’s childhood has made him a hard man devoid of emotions so why is he obsessed with nearby neighbour Milly Parker? An interesting story with dark elements that flows well with a HEA ending.
