Oh snap - I loved this! I don't think I've ever started a book written by G. Bailey and been disappointed by anything in it. Shadowborn Academy was no exception. Definitely enjoy this from the beginning to end. Corvina's character was completely interesting but she wasn't the only one. Heck, even this whole world was interesting. Not surprising that she starts meeting her little harem once she goes to school. It also didn't hurt that all of them were completely yummy and head over heels interested Oh snap - I loved this! AHHHH! I usually don’t DNF books, and if I do I typically don’t leave reviews, but when I saw this book had an average 4 star rating, I thought I should at least say my peace. Honestly, it’s my fault for not enjoying this one. It’s a reverse harem paranormal romance, but I got WAAAAY too excited when I saw that it was about “Shadowborns” and I thought it would be a whole lot darker than it was. The story starts with a young Corvina getting tricked by a faerie into jumping into a well where she *mostly* dies and is reborn as a Shadowborn. <—- FANTASTIC START! But where the story loses me is when we fast forward some odd years to Corvina having already accepted her new Shadowborn identity and is now preparing to go to the Shadowborn Academy to learn about her magics. I’m sorry, what was she doing all this time then? For me, THAT was where the story lay: her coming to terms with her magic, meeting her new bestie, and learning to love her “inner demon” who is actually some kind of sexy shadow faerie that bound himself to her when they were both on the brink of death. AGAIN, could’ve been an AWESOME story, but it’s like the authors skipped all the cool stuff. All that being said, I’m sure this book would appeal to lots of folks. But if you enjoy dark plots, with complex characters, and rhythmic prose (that’s been edited), I wouldn’t recommend this one.

Meh. Yea, Covinia is super special. Half the guys want to bang her. I didn't like any of the guys in her harem either, they all sucked. Meh. Yea, Covinia is super special. Half the guys want to bang her. I didn't like any of the guys in her harem either, they all sucked.

In our series of "Hit and Miss, the Academy Sagas", this was a definite miss. I love G. Bailey, but this book wasn't as polished and as well written as it could have been. I'll keep this short. No spoilers. The "misses" in this book were: - Weird/Boring world building: Mostly, the places/buildings seemed very 'fantastical' and sometimes just like every other academy book. But there was a loooot of descriptive writing, and it got boring at times. But there was a loooot of descriptive writing, and it got boring at times. And there were several loooong-winded info dumps about things that possibly aren't and won't be important. - Inconsistencies: Secrets (and secret talents) that were meant to be secrets were suddenly openly spoken about, and at least two people hung out at Zander's place on Fridays, but were unaware of the other people's hangouts. Also, the time-skips were too fast, and because of them... - Underdeveloped relationships and characters: I have no clue who is really into whom, and what type of people they really are. For a while, I confused Gage with Gale (ugh, similar names push my dyslexia into overdrive), and I still have no idea who Ronan is, but apparently I should have cared..? - Somewhat pointless plot, or plots: If you asked me to sum up the plot of the book, I couldn't do it, because there were too damn many side plot lines, and there really wasn't even truly a single underlying plot (merely one plot line was what caused the end climax thingy, and meh, even that was boring). I found myself asking what the true meaning of the book was supposed to be - as in, what was the story it wanted to tell? - The RH romance: Just bleh. For about uhhh half(?) of the book I didn't know who the FMC will fall for, apart from all of the hot guys that she kept drooling over, and then the ones that she actually liked, well, they were all just very bleh. - It was all just very rushed and sloppy. I'm sorry, but this was a miss for me.

Of course pairing up these two authors, you are guaranteed a hit!!! I enjoy each author separately, so when I found out that they are collaborating again I was very happy. Well. That was awful. I kept getting the characters confused. Grammar was appalling throughout, and the story line was obvious, basic and boring. Disappointed that I actually waited for this to come out. It's also like young adult with a single sexual situation that doesn't go anywhere and a lot of swearing. Originally the impression I got was that it wasn't YA and it was an adult book. So yes as I said boring. Well. That was awful. I kept getting the characters confused. DNF 31% I wanted to like this book and I think under normal circumstances I probably would have. I just think that the timing wasn’t right for me to read this. I was struggling to understand things as I felt like a bunch of the characters and the plot lines were being thrown together at once. I might I try to come back to this later and I’ll hopefully like it more

Reverse harem romances have been a really guilty pleasure for me in 2019. I never in a thousand years would think I would like this type of thing, but it has completely captivated my interest. I can't believe that I am going to say this because I have read some really amazing RH romances, but this was the best start to a multiple love interest romance that I have ever read. It was so perfect! This dark fantasy follows the adventures of Corvina while she navigates her first year at Shadowborn Academy with her best friend. She learns about magic, the history with the Gods and Godesses and that the forest surrounding the academy is full of secrets. Of course, Corvina has secrets of her own and a traumatic past that lead to her becoming a Shadowborn, but she is about to find out that she might have more secrets that she even knows. I loved this book. It kind of reminded me of some of the fantasy books I read as a teen, but obviously with more adult elements. There were so many fantastical elements and a competition that added mystery and action to the story line. There was also a very rich and in-depth back history to this world that I feel like the surface was just scratched in book one and I can't wait to dive deeper into it. The number one thing I loved about this story was the romances. I was completely engrossed by each budding relationship. Like I said above, this was the best beginning to a RH romance that I have ever read. Each relationship was unique, but they all started slow and progressed very naturally. The romances are a focal point in book one, but there is not much action which I liked. I am glad that the romances all have a solid foundation to build upon in the upcoming books. I feel like they are all solid and I am really excited to see what happens. And this is a first for me, but I have TWO favorite guys! Usually one is my favorite and the rest are great, but I LOVE two of them so it will be interesting to see if one pulls ahead of the other for me. I am really glad that I picked up this book. I kinda feel like it was fate because I just so happened upon in on Instagram and the cover captivated me. I picked it up on a whim because usually when I am interested in a book that I randomly find, it goes to my TBR pile and is never seen again. I am so glad that this was not the case and I am SUPER excited to get my hands on book two!

I loved this book! IT starts with Corvina getting tricked by a faerie and almost dying and then coming back shadowborn.. I literally don't need to tell you anything else.. pick it up on that alone. She has to go to a shadowborn academy to learn about her new world and of course that's where she meets her men. I will definitely have these characters stuck in my mind! I'm so giddy for this series! I feel like it's just what I've been needing, a new obsession! I love a good shocking surprise and we got a few at the end. The ending was heart-pounding! I'm still dying with questions and trying to piece what I know together! There is so much to look forward to and I can't wait to see how things will play out! I didn't want to get into detail and give away any spoilers, so read it and find out how awesome it is! DNF 27% Might be because I have been reading too many of these Academy books recently but it just wasn't doing it for me. The introductions to new characters felt flat and her interactions with them seemed off, like disingenuous maybe, which made it hard to get a read of who she was as a person, they put negative emotions that would she need to be overcome in as an afterthought almost but not tied into her thoughts and actions. Just didn't feel cohesive. May try again at a later time. DNF 27% Might be because I have been reading too many of these Academy books recently but it just wasn't doing it for me. I wanted to like it, as I do each book I read, but the relationship between Corvina and Pitch is creepy when you consider she was 8 when he became part of her and the naked/bathing bits are questionable as a result. Like many other young women, men have taken advantage of their youth and inexperience throughout history. Even if the girls think its their choice, it’s morally and ethically reprehensible. And...someone treats you badly, in this case Josh, but he has abs and a cute butt so that so ok to lust after him? Later he treats Corvina nicely for 5 minutes then goes back to being abusive. That’s classic behaviour for abusive relationships. And so I cannot continue reading because I’m so annoyed.

I am addicted to these 2 authors!!!!! I am loving this writing duo between Gem and Scarlett!!! This is the 2nd book of theirs that I have read and it is fantastic!!! So much happened in this story that I never felt as if the story was dragging on or I was losing interest. The entire story was so thrilling and captivating that I flew through this book in just a few hours. I have read so many of Scarlett’s books and this is probably the tamest one I have read. There isn’t any dark elements to it that she is well known for but I think that just goes to show how amazing she is as an author by being able to put on different hats when writing and creating unique stories every time. I have read several of Gem’s books as well and she always has the creativity to craft a truly unique and original story. I love both of them as authors but when the 2 come together, they create perfection!!!! 😍 I loved all the characters in this book and I’m glad that the main character had a good support system and friends. Most academy books usually have the female lead being an outcast without any friends and is constantly bullied but that isn’t what happens here so it was refreshing to read. Pitch actually intrigued me the most mostly because of who he is to Vina during a majority of the book plus his history is still a mystery. I am eager to learn more about Pitch. I love Gage and Zander but I’m still on the fence about Jonah. I would definitely consider this to be a slow burn since the reverse harem hasn’t really been established yet. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series because I’m curious as to what happens with all of them now. I cannot recommend this book enough to lovers of RH!!!

She's smart, courageous, loyal, fierce and so powerful. I really liked the realistic portrayal of her dealing with her trauma. It made her much more relatable as a character and much more likeable since it gives you a glimpse at just how strong she really is as a person. I have to say that I truly admire Corvina Charles and wish we could be besties. Now for the guys - this is more of a slow burn and I'm not 100% sure I have the whole harem figured out but I'm really hoping it involves the 4 guys with her at the end because OMG! That's all I'll say so I don't give anything away. I have to say though that, besides Corvina, the most interesting character is Pitch. He's like a puzzle that pieces together very, very slowly but you just have to wait till it's all put together to get the final picture! He's definitely one of my favorite characters. And, finally, there's Echo the adorable demon rescued. You sort of wish they sold plushies of Echo so you can run out and get your very own. I do hope, speaking of creature friends, that we get to see more of the ravens. They make a cameo appearance and we know they help Corvina but that was about it yet I like the idea of them. In short, go get this read - it's got it all but be warned it leaves you on quite the cliffhanger!

Better Than Expected After reading the critical reviews, my expectations for this book were fairly low. I actually found this to be pretty enjoyable however. What was provided about the world was interesting, though a bit more clarity about the shadowborn vs light fae and dark fae would have made this read even better. The characters were mostly likeable though I would have preferred a little more development so that I could understand their motivations. The pacing was fine and kept me interested. This was definitely intriguing enough for me to want to continue the series.
