The themes that Melissa Muldoon has us as readers deal with (abuse and betrayal of a young woman) are done with eloquence and leave you feeling empowered by the outcome. Melissa Muldoon’s passion and knowledge for Italian art history and Italy itself is so clearly evident in Eternally Artemisia; pair that with her modern day wit and romanticism and you have 3 fabulous escapist reads before you including her 2 other works ‘Waking Isabella’ and ‘Dreaming Sophia’. So grab a tall wine glass, a rather large bowl of spaghetti and settle in for the next best thing to being in Italy, reading about it and its rich past from the words of Melissa Muldoon! *Warning - side affects may include: wanderlust, girl power, and learning some or wanting to learn to speak Italian after reading this book.* Buona Lettura A Tutti!

Her story will delight fans of time travel, history, art, historical fiction, romance, and intrigue. Maddie, an art therapist now in her forties, knows she has lived previous lives, yet the proof is always just beyond her reach. First introduced to the works of Artemisia Gentileschi and others in a Baroque art history class, Maddie gets a feeling she has been friends with Artemisia over the span of many lifetimes, and they share a deep and cosmic connection. With a career move that takes her from New York to Italy, Maddie quickly acclimates to the country of her beloved friend. Maddie’s first venture in Italy is to host an art therapy retreat for women recovering from sexual assault and abuse. One of the women attending the retreat is Camilla, a member of the Crociani family. The noble Crociani family dates back to the 17th century during the time of Cosimo Medici’s influence in Florence. Camilla invites Maddie to a family gathering, and it is here her past starts blending into her present and future. Readers follow Maddie as she forms unbreakable bonds with Artemisia Gentileschi and finds her true love, Matteo Crociani. As Maddie is drawn into a parallel universe reliving her past and experiencing her future, she proves once and for all that true love and heartfelt connections stand the tests of time. As Maddie puts it, “Wouldn’t it be an amazing thing…to have an emotional bond with another human being so true that it survived many lives?” (p. 31). Melissa Muldoon is in her element in “Eternally Artemisia.” There are so many delicious details that are woven so intricately into multiple storylines, and her distinctive tone sets her apart. She has truly found her niche in delivering inspiring “need-to-know” stories about women - their strengths, determination and will to “not only survive but thrive” under the most challenging of circumstances throughout history. “Eternally Artemisia” hits issues from eras long past that are still unfortunately, very relevant today, including rape and sexual abuse, the arrogance of small-minded individuals who are determined to hold women back, women’s rights in general, and the role of science and religion in our world – just to name a few. Sound familiar? Muldoon spotlights her passion for art, history, Italy and women throughout the story. Artemisia Gentileschi was a woman truly ahead of her time, accomplishing things unheard of for women in her era. Along with being one of the most progressive painters in her period, she may have engineered the original “Me Too” movement, standing up to her abuser and seeking justice. I did not have prior knowledge of Artemisia before reading this book and was amazed to hear her story and learn more about her from the author’s creative gift for educating her readers through exciting, page-turning narrative. “Eternally Artemisia” will hook you from the very first page with the gruesome, yet oddly satisfying, accounting of how a pious young widow from a Jewish city beheads the general of an Assyrian army sent to destroy the city. It’s a story you won’t soon forget as Muldoon paints such a vivid representation, you halfway expect the blood to splatter all over you while reading! Along with “Eternally Artemisia,” Melissa Muldoon has also authored two other books around distinct artistic women and their journeys: “Dreaming Sophia” and “Waking Isabella.” I’ve had the pleasure of reading all three of her novels and highly recommend them all – especially to those interested in art, history and romance - featuring strong leading ladies, of course!

I don’t want to do a spoiler so I will describe this book as best I can. The first book I read of Ms. Muldoon’s was Dreaming Sophia. I described it as an unusual book that makes you want to follow the author, and follow the author I did! The next one I read was Eternally Artemisia and it had the same distinct style. It was a very different story, yet it had the same type of multidimensional, interesting characters both modern and historical. Based on the life of a real person in history, as well I don’t want to do a spoiler so I will describe this book as best I can. The first book I read of Ms. Muldoon’s was Dreaming Sophia. It was a very different story, yet it had the same type of multidimensional, interesting characters both modern and historical. Based on the life of a real person in history, as well as a modern-day heroine, it blended fictional aspects with factual events and explores how the human mind works in its struggle with multiple emotions, both good and bad. At the same time, we once again get a stunning depiction of Italian life right down to the tiniest detail. Ms. Muldoon has a unique way of telling the story that keeps you engaged and interested through the entire book, and the story line is always cohesive and understandable, even while being complicated with regard to the topics and various viewpoints. That is somewhat of an art form in and of itself! The author has an interesting way of comparing the way a woman reacted or may have reacted to a violent episode in ancient times, to how women in this day and age react, and how surprisingly similar a lot of those emotions are, despite centuries of time in between. What I like best about it, though, is that it shows that women have been strong from the beginning of time, but sometimes had their strength subdued. But… Is that not sometimes how it is in modern times as well? Maybe I sound like I’m in my own incoherent dream here, but if you read this book, I believe it will have a similar impact on you. You may not get what I got out of it and I might not get what you got out of it, but everyone will get something! The ending was also very satisfying and just what I was hoping for! Planning to read another of this author’s books soon. One final thing, I particularly liked Ms. Muldoon’s self illustrated covers! Instead of following the formulamatic nonsense that “they” insist you have to do when making a cover, she creates covers that perfectly portray what’s in the book in a very unique way. Thumbs up.

She spends many moments daydreaming about the people in the paintings making the interactions seem so very real! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these books by Melissa Muldoon! It takes readers to learn about these famous female painters from Europe, particularly the Spain and Italy areas. With the Italian language thrown into the stories like confetti, I’m swooned to learn the language. And the descriptions of Tuscany make me want to visit someday!! And like a tapestry’s beginnings, many threads must somehow find their way together to create the unforgettable whole of this tale of never-ending love, bonds eternal, and the innate strength of women. Not an easy task, Muldoon as managed to do just this, taking the reader from Biblical times, to the present, to Renaissance Italy, to the tumultuous 1930’s in Europe…and beyond (don’t want to give the ending away!). As with many stories involving leaps through time and eras, it may take the reader a chapter or two to allow the layers to peel away, revealing the rich story and the clever connections of characters and events. Muldoon introduces us to the two protagonists: Maddie, an art therapist whose parallel lives connect her through time to her one eternal love Matteo, and her muse, Artemisia Gentileschi, a 17th century Italian artist whose fortitude overcame extensive trials in a time when women were afforded few, if any, rights. Muldoon’s expertise in art history and her passion for Italy, coupled with her gift of vivid and richly detailed storytelling, allow us to feel as if we’re tagging along with Maddie, Artemisia, Matteo, and a whole cast of characters, many literally stepping from the pages of history. Just the right amount of intrigue, romance, menace, humor, suspense, and joy are the threads that bind together this wonderful historical fiction novel and draw the reader into that blissful state of “can’t put it down”. However, it’s the essence of the story that left me relishing the afterthoughts: love can be eternal, friendship is golden, hope and restoration lie within us all.

Muldoon and I am highly motivated and energetic since then. The story is a blend of Italian artistic culture, love tales, commitment, dedication and passion. This is the story of a golden age woman Maddie, she is an art therapist who is healed after a sad past life. Maddie travels to Italy to carry out remedial help for women who suffered exploitation. While she was in Italy, what captured her mind and soul was the paintings and artworks of Artemesia Gentileschi, an eminent artist of the era. Her artworks were a representation of women's sufferings and courage which screamed louder and caught Maddie. Maddie could relate her past life through her paintings. In her present life, Maddie gets to know a family via Gentileschi's paintings and there comes a special bond between Maddie, Artemesia and a newly introduced character Matteo. Enter this artistic world and discover the tales of love, passion, pain and endurance. This is a very well researched book, I heartily appreciate how the author has blended history, art and fictional interpretations. I enjoyed reading this and really felt that I was traveling in this era. The story also highlights the the woman empowerment and gives a message that "Enthusiasm is common, Endurance is more." I would recommend you to read this, fiction, history and art admirers will find this extremely precious. This is an extraordinarily unique work and it deserves appreciation. Go get your copy now and start this phenomenal journey.

Both women found release and freedom in the arts (which I love since I also love the arts!) where they forced others to come face to face with the way women were treated. I loved the idea of time travel and how Maddie was tied to women from the past and her love, Matteo, that she finds each century. I fell in love with Venice when I traveled there as a teen, nothing has ever felt more like home. I felt like I had walked those streets before, seen those sights and smells. So for me, I could definitely appreciate the idea of time not being linear and a soul being tied to a certain time, person and love. I also loved the focus of how strong these women were. They faced great trials and humiliation but through it all they remained strong and defiant. They showed that society could try to beat them down but they would not remain down. This is such an important, positive message for young women today. We are not our past and we should never let it define us. This novel is a definite must read, you will not want to put it down.

Maddie's spirit is inspirational, and her personality runs deep. When mixed with the beauty of Italy, and then slipped into various moments of time, a memorizing setting is formed. Four women experience harsh moments filled with shame, and yet, they managed to find a way to rise above it. The message is empowering. This is a read which is hard to put down and leaves a footprint long after the book is placed back on the shelf. I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed reading this so much that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.

This is the third book I have read and reviewed by author Melissa Muldoon. All three have been fiction stories inspired by a strong, talented woman who lived in Italy centuries ago. This one stands as slightly different in the way we experience this historical woman through several lifetimes. The theme - perhaps we have soul mates, people we are spiritually tied to that we meet again and again in new lives. As in other books by this author, it is a woman in the present who introduces us to the past. I enjoyed this book the most when it moved between the present and that past, where we firmly walk with Maddie in the here and now while experiencing the past through her flashbacks. As the story progresses, there comes a point where the story changes and we stay with Maddie in her flashbacks. We experience a few lives in a row, ending with her in the future in outer space. While the story prepared us for this by a recurring pattern of the characters looking up at the stars and dreaming of visiting the heavens, I still found it a bit jarring. Up to this point, it was a mainly a historical novel. Then it stepped firmly into SciFi/Fantasy; again justified as this was hinted at several times before, but for some reason I struggled with this ending. That said, Eternally Artemisia is a well written, intriguing novel offering yet another amazing Italian woman who defied the social restrictions placed on her by the time she lived in and I enjoyed the recurring lives that were placed in the past very much.

Eternally Artemisia offers readers another glimpse into Italy. The author does a fantastic job weaving Italy's history, art, and culture into her storyline. Eternally Artemisia transports readers to another time and place. I love the author's writing style. She creates a very modern story to inspire readers--while weaving time travel and imaginary events with realism and historical details. The characters in this novel face challenges and struggles as they find their strength and destinies. Readers will find an inspirational journey that spans time, continents, and cultures. Would I recommend Eternally Artemisia by Melissa Muldoon? Eternally Artemisia was another wonderfully written novel by Melissa Muldoon. The characters are strong and beautifully developed and connected across time in a way that flows well through the mystery and plot twists. This novel is a must read for historical fiction fans who enjoy an imaginative adventure as they explore new lands and past times. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.

Having read Ms. Muldoon’s previous two novels, I knew that I wanted to read her latest book. And having read this latest installment of her Italy novels, I really enjoyed this book, although I had a thing or two that I thought could have been done better. For the things that I didn’t like about the book I didn’t like how the book was concluded. I felt that the author could have brought the book full-circle rather than just end it where she did. For the things that I didn’t like about the book I didn’t like how the book was concluded. I felt that the author could have brought the book full-circle rather than just end it where she did. Also I felt that the first two parts could have been a little shorter or the final two parts could have been a little longer. But that being said, I really quite enjoyed the book, especially the first two parts. I have several reasons that I enjoyed the book. The first reason that I enjoyed the book was that I felt that Ms. Muldoon’s writing was much better from her first two books, even though I really enjoyed those ones as well. But you can really see the growth of the author’s writing over the course of the three books. Secondly I enjoyed the book because the author drew her main characters very well. One really felt that you were there right beside Maddie as she went into these parallel lives. Finally I felt that I could just enjoy the book and not really care about what was going on in the outside world. First posted on Jayne's Books as a part of a book tour.

Maddie lives in Upper Manhattan. She was in her apartment packing stuffs when she was taken into a dream where a female painter Artemisia kissed her. Maddie's interest in Artemisia was not limited to academic interest. It was more intimate. Maddie's interest in Artemisia increased when she learnt that Artemisia was raped by her painting instructor. Story gets more interesting as Maddie moved to Italy. Grab a copy of this book to know what happens next. This book has many characters that we get to meet as we read the story. Cast of Historical Players given at the beginning of the book helped me to understand the story cast better. Cover photo is nice with a suitable title. Plot of the story is interesting. My favorite character is of Maddie. If you love stories that are set in Italy, you couldn't afford to miss to read this book. Go ahead with it without thinking twice.

Maddie, a 40 year old art therapist has decided to live her dream of relocating from New York City to Italy to continue her work with a new business partner. Although she believes in romantic love, she isn’t convinced that she has met the one person she is willing to spend the rest of her life with. Maddie has always known that she was different, often experiencing feelings of not quite belonging in the present and of being gently tugged by the past, of what exactly she wasn’t certain. While in Italy the connection with the past heightens as she “meets” an exceedingly talented female artist from the past, Artemisia Gentileschi, with whom she forms a bond that feels has always existed. When she is befriended by the Crociani family, she learns of their turbulent past and as well as their connection with Artemisia. Drawn to the painting of Matteo Crociani in their gallery, she begins to feel an unexpected bond with this long-dead ancestor. A fascinating story of suspense, tragedy and enduring love that transcends time, Melissa Muldoon has successfully created a storyline that will capture your heart and imagination.

I found myself wishing I could meet the women in her retreat group and join in on their exploration of learning more about themselves through art and friendships. Maddie’s desire to use her art and therapy background to bring women together and empower them after they have suffered the trauma of abuse was a perfect reminder of how women supporting women is just such a powerful thing. By sharing our own personal experiences we can help other women profoundly. Maddie’s story helped to show how help other women find their strength, the result is feeling more powerful in your self. Yet again… an Italy Book Tour selection has relit my desire to run off to explore Italy. The descriptions of the landscape, the cities, the communities, the foods… of how I wish I could run off on an adventure right now!

From puppies in barns to obsessions with horoscopes to the clatter of dinner plates heard in vicoli on soccer Sundays, Melissa takes me home to all the idiosyncracies of Italian life. All this was expected, as was the incorporation of Italian history and art appreciation that is a hallmark of her books. I was not disappointed. What I was not expecting was the complexity and intricacy of the storyline, back and forth through history, with one amazing classic figure, Artemesia Gentileschi masterfully tying all her fascinating characters together. Brava Melissa. Delicious and satisfying

“Eternally Artemesia” is a sumptuous read, painting an inspiring and romantic depiction of the eternal journey of true love. Much of the history, art and some of the characters portrayed were real and Melissa Muldoon did a brilliant job of blending them onto the romantic canvas that makes this story fly! Her main characters are wonderfully developed. Maddie is so strong and her Matteo is the perfect counterpart. A wonderful journey This book was a wonderful journey to Italy, through time, and space. It is a wonderful take on reincarnation and how lovers find each other again every time they are reborn. I love the added element of the friendship and support of women to empower each other. Every woman should internalize Artemisia’s message, you are not inferior to man. Though they may try to put you down, believe in yourself and thrive. A great moral lesson!

Inspiring! This story grips you from the moment you start reading. I loved how Melissa took a true story from the past and weaved it into a tale that everyone nowadays can enjoy. A suspenseful romance with an inspiring message. You know, it kind of reminds me of outlander so if you like that series you should give this one a try too.

A joy to read, This book is a joy to read. A cleverly woven story, I loved the way it flowed easily from one time zone to another. “She was remembering things as if she had re-booted her internal computer and old data bits” I also loved her descriptions of Florence and Venice, both cities I love.
