Hiking the Appalachian Trail is your dream adventure – but so far, you’ve done nothing but dream. What’s stopping you from making it a reality? Are you afraid of wild animals? Not sure you can handle going a week without a shower? Or do you simply doubt that you are capable of taking on this badass adventure?  Bestselling author Jen Beck Seymour thru-hiked the trail in 2017, Hiking the Appalachian Trail is your dream adventure – but so far, you’ve done nothing but dream. What’s stopping you from making it a reality? Are you afraid of wild animals? Not sure you can handle going a week without a shower? Or do you simply doubt that you are capable of taking on this badass adventure?  Bestselling author Jen Beck Seymour thru-hiked the trail in 2017, and she understands the fears and doubts that may hinder some women from following their hearts. But Jen wants you to know that your dream is not out of reach. In this book, she gives you the answers you need to these (and more) questions:  Is it safe for women do this alone? What can I do to protect myself from dangerous animals or people? How do I deal with my period (and other bodily functions) while camping? I don’t have a hiking partner – what if I get lonely or injured? How can I keep my family from worrying or talking me out of it? Jen also interviews 12 inspirational women who recently hiked the trail – alone or with a partner (including a mom-and-son team and a family with a baby) – who share their stories with all the honest, down-and-dirty details about the challenges they faced before, during, and after their hikes.  If you’ve always wanted to go hiking – from day hikes to long-distance or thru-hiking – THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! CHICAS ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL will not only help you squash those doubts and fears but will also give you practical advice on how to make your dream of adventure come true.

I don’t have any plans to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail (AT) but I enjoy reading about others’ adventures as they tackle surmountable challenges such as hiking the AT. This book isn’t an accounting of the author’s hike, but rather a collection of women-centric tips followed by interviews with 12 women who have hiked the AT. The tips are intended to alleviate fears and concerns, offer safety advice, and prepare women for their specific needs while spending months on the trail. The tips are intended to alleviate fears and concerns, offer safety advice, and prepare women for their specific needs while spending months on the trail. There’s a wealth of practical information, much of which is applicable to anyone planning a thru-hike. Some tips came about as a result of the author’s own experiences on the trail, others were picked up along the way from fellow hikers, and some came from online networking with previous long-distance trekkers. Specific gear recommendations are mentioned here and there throughout the tips as well. The second half of the book delves into the conversations with women who have hiked the trail. I really enjoyed reading their interviews and I got a real sense of their personalities and who these women are as individuals. Their personal stories showed me highs and lows, motivations and challenges, and demonstrated the need to prepare for the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the journey as well as the physical. I found this to be an encouraging, affirming, and inspiring book. Even if I have no plans to hike the AT, I came away feeling like it is possible for me to do it too, or to take on any other great life-changing challenge.

Empowering Rather than just a record of a long hike this book looks at the thoughts and feelings of the women who thru-hike the AT. A good read for either women or men.

Jen Beck Seymour shares in the first half tips and products for female hikers of the Appalachian Trail (AT) (or any other long-hike). The second half is 12 Q&A (including her own) of women who have thru-hiked or almost completed the AT. I liked the fact that most of the same questions were posed to all the interviewees for consistency. Illnesses, toll on their bodies, all kinds of weather, safety were discussed but also the empowering feeling of completing a momentous, grueling task. Several themes played through each story, but one particular that struck me in the interviews was the post-trail depression that set in and how each combated and worked through it.

Excellent Read! I had already read the book that "Chica & Sunsets" wrote and really liked that so I decided to read this one as well. I'm really glad I did. I enjoyed the interviews done with all the women who'd done the trail and found much inspiration from all of them. Would definitely recommend this book to others. Chica comes across as very likeable, strong and encouraging. I now also look forward to following her on her youtube channel. Excellent Read! Informative and Entertaining I read a lot of books about the AT. This is one of my top five. Jen writes in an informative, practical style that I like. She addresses fears and potential problems in practical and solution based ways. I loved all the stories from different women hikers. This is a must read for women who are thinking about hiking the AT.

This books is terrific for the hiking tips and stories of women hikers. I found the hiking information applicable to the planning I'm doing for a multi-day hike in the UP Michigan. The focus is AT bound women, but much of the content is relevant for other hikers as well. The interviews of women hikers in the second half of the book were enjoyable and inspirational to read. The advice sections weren't super helpful for someone who has been backpacking a bunch of times, but the stories by the women who have thru-hiked were all great and very inspiring.
