    While this edition is dated, I would recommend that those interested in higher education read the more recent edition. The work effectively navigates the colonial period, the rise of universities, the twentieth century, and this edition closes, meaningfully, with the “Distinguishing Features of American Higher Education.” Brubacher and Rudy meaningfully examine areas such as academic freedom, articulation processes, and philosophies from the colonial period until 1976. The work effectively navigates the colonial period, the rise of universities, the twentieth century, and this edition closes, meaningfully, with the “Distinguishing Features of American Higher Education.” Brubacher and Rudy meaningfully examine areas such as academic freedom, articulation processes, and philosophies from the colonial period until 1976. This book is, now, itself a study in history as it is 44 years past printing, but that might make it noteworthy of study on its own - at least for my research purposes. You might prefer a more recent edition, but as a historical study of the consistent transitional nature of American Higher Education, it is approachable, sufficiently engaging, and decidedly informative.
