I also write about fantasy literature, although my focus is the adult market. I hadn't gone through this volume before because I thought the focus would be much younger than what I needed. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not too excited about the choice of categories into which works are sorted here. Some are good, but the distinctions between others are highly unclear or are so large as to be meaningless: "High Fantasy: Alternate Worlds or Realities"? "Magic Adventure Fantasies"? Some are good, but the distinctions between others are highly unclear or are so large as to be meaningless: "High Fantasy: Alternate Worlds or Realities"? "Magic Adventure Fantasies"? And while the annotations are solid, they're plot-heavy and don't cover other appeal factors as much as one might want, making the books sound same-ish. What gets the five star rating, despite any shortcomings, is the sheer coverage of this volume. It's excellent! Not only are all of the children's authors up to its pub date included, but most of the adult authors are as well. That's very wise, as fantasy is definitely a field where readers cross over the age gap. I would recommend that this author take the final steps of adding in the few adult authors who aren't included here (there aren't many who are missing) and market this to the entire fantasy reading community. It's the closest I've seen to a bibliography of the entire genre. This wouldn't be a bad investment for a family of fantasy lovers, although the price tag is hefty, so this is mostly for libraries or other institutions. (There are less expensive guides, more opinionated guides out there for the individual reader or for the circulating collection of a library. Of course I'm partial to the Read On... series). If your library is going to invest in one large guide for fantasy fiction, this is the one I would pick. You'll have to point out its utility to the adults, but for both support of collection development and a reference tool for the most voracious fantasy readers, this will get the job done.

Library Media Connection, 24(5) p89. Criteria: Content Scope The content’s scope is massive, as evidenced by the 1128pp. It covers several Subgenres such as animals, sorcery, alternate world, time travel, and witchcraft. Accuracy, Authority, and Bias Because this is the 5th edition, it has been proven to be both authoritative and popular. Arrangement and Presentation This bibliography is divided into subgenres of animals, alternate world, time travel, witchcraft, and sorcery. In addition to complete bibliographic information within the the divisions and listings of titles, the work also includes review citations, recommended grade level, annotations, and notes recommended titles. Relation to Similar Works Since this is reviewed and advertised as being appropriate for both students looking for something good to read in the fantasy genre, and for teacher-librarians shopping for books to add to their fantasy collection, I wasn’t sure if this would be the best purchase for students. But I went on and added it to GoodReads based on the fact that it is a 5th edition, and because fantasy is such a hot genre right now. Timeliness and Permanence Ever since the Harry Potter books were published and there was renewed interest in The Lord of the Rings, there has been an explosion of interest in the fantasy genre among young people. The 5th edition of this bibliography indicates that it has survived and been popular. Accessibility/Diversity Because in addition to listings of titles within divisions such as witchcraft, sorcery, alternate worlds, animals, and time travel, this bibliography also cites reviewes, notes recommended titles, and lists appropriate grade levels, both students and teacher-librarians can use it in helping make good choices for reading and adding to the library collectin. This book was immensely useful, if adding to my list of 'children's books to be read' could be considered useful rather than depressing due to the enormity of the task. Best of all, I was reminded of a few books I'd loved and forgotten about. Sadly, one is so rare that I don't expect to find a decent copy. Even so, I had the joy of recognition when I saw the title and that counts for a great deal.
