Heartstopper started as a tiny passion project and now it's a whole book. WHAT. Nick and Charlie have been close to my heart ever since I wrote them into my first book SOLITAIRE in 2012, and I'm so, SO happy to be telling their story while also doing the thing I always said I wanted to do when I grew up - make comics. excuse me but this is the absolute cutest thing I have encountered and I am simply heart-eyes over it. I already adore Radio Silence and I Was Born for This (although I haven't yet read Solitaire which is slightly bad because this is a spin-off from that one) and I adore her work. But the art??? An entire book of the most adorakable and expressive yet simple artwork was just...😍😍 this book is soft™ and they are so young and sweet and wholesome. i also have such a soft spot for books about realisin excuse me but this is the absolute cutest thing I have encountered and I am simply heart-eyes over it. I had no idea this book was going to be part one of a many part series, so I am SHOCKED and BETRAYED by that cliffhanger!!!! This is such a sweet story about Charlie and Nick's developing friendship and feelings. I loved how supportive Nick was in both being a friend and a teammate to Charlie, and in turn, I liked how this wasn't really a story about Charlie coming to terms with his sexuality; he was already out and proud, and he was just grappling with feelings for this supposed straight guy. I wish we could have seen a little more about Nick questioning his sexuality because I thought those short scenes were really powerful and important, but still, I loved the progression of this story and the art style matched the tone so beautifully and I cannot wait to read the second volume that comes out in July!

Alice Oseman's Heartstopper is a beautifully poignant graphic novel about identity, friendship, crushes, and the flush of first love. Most people in school seem to know that Charlie is gay. He’s taken some bullying for it, and it’s toyed with his self-esteem and what he thinks he deserves in terms of relationships, but for the most part, life isn’t too bad. One day Charlie gets assigned to a new classroom and sits next to Nick Nelson, who is a grade ahead of him. Nick is tall, muscular, popular, a real “rugby lad.” But while Charlie expects Nick to ignore him, the two quickly strike up a real friendship. As their friendship grows (Nick even gets Charlie to play rugby), and Nick even rescues Charlie from a potentially messy situation, Charlie can’t believe that he’s crushing on a straight guy. But why is it that Nick can’t stop thinking about Charlie, too? Ah, this was amazing. It was so endearing, so wonderfully drawn, that I fell in love with this almost immediately. I read it quickly and was sad that it was over—I immediately ordered volume 2, which should arrive Sunday!! (Volume 3 is due out in February.) The title of this book isn’t quite accurate. I’d call it Heartgrabber , because it took hold of my heart and won’t let go. I've really been loving graphic novels lately and feel like these stories really lend themselves to being told in this format. And as much as I love conjuring up images of what I read in my own head, sometimes it's great to see what the author or illustrator had in mind. Once again, I’m so happy that books like this exist today, to let LGBTQIA+ kids—and adults—see that who they choose to love doesn’t doom them to loneliness. No one's road is perfectly easy, but it's nice to have books like this as companions along the journey. See all of my reviews at itseithersadnessoreuphoria.blogspot.com. I think I’ll go with one of my “my thoughts about this comic” reviews here! Because you already know most of them if you’ve read my continuing "Heartstopper” webcomic review. ;-) 1.) “Are you okay?” I think I never mentioned this before but I just love Charlie’s sister Tori. She’s so caring and always seems to look right through her brother. Her knowing smile when Charlie left to meet Nick and the hug she gave him when he couldn’t put his feelings into proper words. <333 She’s just amazing and #Si I think I’ll go with one of my “my thoughts about this comic” reviews here! Nick searching the internet because he’s confused by his growing feelings for Charlie has to be one of the MOST RELATABLE moments ever!!! Seriously, it’s relatable af! We’ve all been there and so many of us only had the internet to find out about ourselves! I just love that Alice Oseman addressed this in her story! I’m convinced every queer person that grew up in times of the internet can relate to this scene. XD 3.) ”You can’t tell whether people are gay by what they look like. And gay or straight aren’t the only two options. Anyway, it’s very rude to speculate about people’s sexuality.” Yes, Miss Singh!!! YES, YES and once again YES! I swear their P.E. teacher and coach is one of the best characters ever! I loved how she dealt with Nick’s friends. *lol* Politely but definitely firmly as well. You rock, Miss Singh! ;-P 4.) Nick giving Harry a piece of his mind! It never gets old. Never! ;-P I adore him for defending Charlie and this even though he’s so confused himself. He’s just an amazing, courageous and honourable person. =) 5.) I really dislike Benjamin Hope! His relationship with Charlie is just toxic and I’m so glad Charlie realized this too. That moment when he put Ben in his place! Good for him! Really good for him! Plus I think it was the first time I saw a spark of the Slytherin in him. *lol* 6.) Charlie testing the waters. He did it so carefully and he was so considerate. Nick’s feelings are all over the place and he’s confused so Charlie’s gentle approach was really appreciated. (view spoiler)[AND THAT FIRST KISS!!! OMG!!! I loved all the emotions that were conveyed!!! Alice Oseman did an excellent job at capturing the moment! Their facial expressions! AHHHAKADFASDJFKASDFJ! I loved it so much!!! *dies* (hide spoiler)] That ending though!!! T_T I need to see my babies happy so I’m really looking forward to read the second volume! XD I know it will get cute! <333 Conclusion: To hold this in my hands and to turn the pages was such an awesome experience. I could take in the drawings and could see all those little details which made this even more enjoyable. If you ask me, it’s definitely worth it to read a physical copy! =) ____________________________ I've been reading the webcomic for years and I just couldn't resist to borrow this when I saw it sitting on the library shelf. To hold this webcomic in my fingers and to actually turn the pages, the temptation was just too much to resist. xD I'm looking forward to see those two fall in love all over again. <333 And I'm curious if I'll recognize more details now that I actually hold a copy in my hands. =)
