    I wasn't familiar with Red Truck Bakery in Virginia before I checked this book out. But now after reading their story and seeing these recipes if I'm ever in the area I will definitely check it out. Brian Noyes worked in the publishing industry, but always enjoyed baking on the side. Deciding to get away from the DC area, he and his partner purchased a farm in Virginia and he stared making jams and jellies to sell in the area, soon he expanded to baked good and Red Truck Bakery took off. But now after reading their story and seeing these recipes if I'm ever in the area I will definitely check it out. Brian Noyes worked in the publishing industry, but always enjoyed baking on the side. Deciding to get away from the DC area, he and his partner purchased a farm in Virginia and he stared making jams and jellies to sell in the area, soon he expanded to baked good and Red Truck Bakery took off. Surviving the Great Recession, they continue on today with two physical locations in Virginia. The recipes look amazing and I really like that he includes both savory and sweet recipes. There are definitely plenty I want to try myself.

    The Caramel Pumpkin Pie seems interesting and if the book got the attention of the Lee brothers, that's worth noting --- Leave it to a baker who has past experience as both writer, editor, and designer to fashion a cookbook that roars on 8 cylinders! Matt and Ted Lee --- Brian Noyes is a master of subtle subversion who slips paw paws in chess pie, crumbles pretzels in pie crust, and bakes an almond cake that conjures up those delicious Chinese takeout cookies with the almond divots.     Sometimes I like to pretend I am a Southern Gal, and when that happens I make biscuits and gravy and sit in the sunshine and read Southern cookbooks like they’re going out of style. I will definitely be trying a few recipes from this cookbook, but I’m keeping my review at three stars until I test the author’s biscuit recipe and decide if it’s better or worse than my current fav. 😜 May bump up later when I’ve made my way through a few recipes. That said, I would have appreciated a list of some of their vendors and resources for those same regional ingredients.     I had read about Red Truck Bakery in an issue of Garden and Gun, so when I saw a copy of their cookbook in the gift shop on a recent trip to George Washington's Mount Vernon, I snapped it up. While comparing our purchases later that afternoon, we resolved to make something from the book that evening, leaving the decision to whatever stuck our fancy for which we already had all necessary items on hand. That brought us to the Orange Olive Oil Cake with Rosemary. The instructions were clear, concis I had read about Red Truck Bakery in an issue of Garden and Gun, so when I saw a copy of their cookbook in the gift shop on a recent trip to George Washington's Mount Vernon, I snapped it up. While comparing our purchases later that afternoon, we resolved to make something from the book that evening, leaving the decision to whatever stuck our fancy for which we already had all necessary items on hand. That brought us to the Orange Olive Oil Cake with Rosemary. The instructions were clear, concise, accurate, and resulted in a beautiful, low cake, with the tartness of lemon curd and the unfussy satisfaction that accompanies a cake you dust with powdered sugar instead of icing. So while that's the only recipe I've made to date, I have already selected our Thanksgiving dinner dessert, some fall/winter breads, and am going to enjoy working my way through its innovations (e.g., the addition of Baileys Irish Cream to the icing on a Guinness Stout cake) on recipes I already have in rotation. Best yet, I had mistakenly thought the actual Red Truck Bakery was further South (possibly because of the G & G featire), so was thrilled to learn it's actually in Virginia's northern Piedmont, roughly an hour outside the Washington, DC area. That said, there will definitely be a daytrip to their Warrenton cafe in our not-too-distant future.

Exceptional: Ham scones with cheddar and scallions Virginia Country ham and gruyere quiche Pumpkin bread Good but needs some tinkering: Skillet cornbread with pimento cheese frosting There are gorgeous pictures for most recipes. A few exceptions, but do you really need a picture of pumpkin bread?     Baking is not my forte but this cookbook is so charming I couldn’t resist. Not only does it contain bakery recipes from their store in Virginia but also breakfast dishes and a wonderful looking pimento cheese I can’t wait to try. The photographs were plenty and the bakery’s back story made for a delightful read. YUM!

    First, i must say I don't care for southern food, but I love to look over cookbooks and this story just touched me. From the humble truck beginnings came a wonderful new/old life! A country girl at heart enjoyed this immensely, great pics and 100% southern recipes.
