We learn more about Irena, Roz's little sis from Andalusia, Spain. Esteban, the Caspian International Sentinel marketing director is her H and he is from Castile. We also get non-stop drama here as Roz goes through a terrifying experience. Fortunately we get a list of characters to sort the major players in this one out. PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS IN THIS BOOK (BOOK THREE) IRENA OLIVERA: Des Amery's illegitimate daughter and half-sister of Roz Amery. Irena has left her humble country home in Spain to join the Sentinel and is determined to make a mark in the world. ESTEBAN SEBASTIAN: The fiery Spanish marketing director who has a reputation for being the Sentinel's chief heart-throb. GINA TYRRELL: The young widow of Sir George's beloved grandson James, and, following Sir George's death, the joint owner, with Nick Caspian, of the Sentinel. She blames Nick Caspian for Sir George's death and vows to make him pay. NICK CASPIAN: International media tycoon. He is a ruthless and dangerous predator who set his eyes on owning the Sentinel and on destroying anyone who gets in his way. ROZ AMERY: Foreign affairs reporter. She is fiercely ambitious and sees her future as being tied firmly to the Sentinel and to Gina Tyrrell in person. At the same time, Daniel Bruneille is assuming a growing importance in her life. DANIEL BRUNEILLE: Chief foreign affairs editor. Rules the department with an iron fist. Fiery and temperamental, he is not the easiest of men to get on with, although Roz seems to understand him! We start off with Des putting Irena on plane to London, she is going to work as a translator at the Sentinel and stay with Daniel and Roz, who are now living together. She meets Esteban on the plane, tho Irena has no clue as to who his is. Esteban's business mess of paperwork is blocking the plane aisle and when Irena wants to pass by, the papers fall to the floor. Irena speaks to Esteban in French, so she is startled when he answers in Spanish and much is made of his formal reserve, mad dark Latin looks and how icily he stares at Irena as she tries to pick the papers up. Things get worse when she deboards the plane and blocks Esteban's exit as she is anxiously awaiting Roz to come pick her up. Roz is delayed on a flight from Rome, so Daniel shows up instead. He and Irena go to dinner after a get reacquainted conversation and they choose a French restaurant at the Barbary Wharf complex. There are several LOOKS from the other Sentinel staffers eating there, as few people know that Roz has a little sister and they all assume that Daniel is stepping out on Roz - especially Valerie, the blonde bombshell women's feature reporter who is being chased by finance editor Gib Collingwood, whom she keeps giving the brush off to as he is currently getting divorced. In the meanwhile, Nick and Gina are having their usual close proximity battle. Nick wants Gina to go to the US with him, ostensibly to learn more about Caspian International, but Gina declines. She has no interest in Nick's Paparazzi Empire and in fact she is increasingly angry about the down market turn the newspaper is taking. People are getting fired left and right and the paper is becoming downright sleazy with the scanty clad ladies pics and the gossip and muckraking. Then the news comes in that the Rome flight Roz is on has been hijacked. The hostage takers have forced the plane to fly to Cypress and there is plenty of Roz POV as she waits with the other terrified passengers to learn her fate on the plane. The hijackers take everyone's passports and find out Roz is a journalist. Roz is brought to the front of the plane and made to write out the hijacker's manifesto - then the main and meanest hijacker pistol whips her and Roz gets beaten. Daniel is found by Esteban in the restaurant with Irena and Nick sends him to Cypress in his private jet. Irena goes to stay with Gina and the two ladies anxiously watch the TV news for any more information. (It was kinda funny, cause CL writes about the TV stations going off air around 3 am and that was a huge flash back to the old days before there were internets and 24hr cable news channels.) We also get some long awaited food porn, Gina serves smoked salmon, delicately poached eggs and a fresh exotic fruit salad with fresh squeezed juice for breakfast. Then Nick and Esteban show up and we find out that Nick now owns the other penthouse flat next Gina's - Nick is invading Gina's life in every way he can, tho Gina doesn't know about the next door neighbor business yet. The news from Cypress isn't good, the hijackers released all the women and children on the plane except for Roz. They are keeping her cause she is a reporter and they want their side heard. Every one is very tense and Gina takes Irena into the Sentinel office. Hazel is there and it is almost time for her wedding to Piet. She invites Irena to the wedding and Irena is sent off to get her photo taken for her new Sentinel employee ID. The photo editor tries to get Irena to pose in some suggestive photo's. He wants to feature her in a pin up calendar that is Nick's latest sleazoid brain child. Irena tries to tell the photographer that she doesn't want to do this, but in her confusion she loses her English and finally Esteban storms in and drags her out. There is a roofie kiss on the way back to the upper offices and Irena starts to fall in love. We are back with Roz on the plane and all of the sudden, soldiers rush the plane and Roz gets shot three times. She is unconscious and needs a few blood transfusions. Daniel donates blood, cause he and Roz are a match and now we all have to wait for the surgeon to save Roz. Gina and Irene spend another night at Gina's flat and Nick and Esteban show up once again to tell Irena about the shooting. Gina is asleep on the couch and while Irena is making Esteban and Nick some coffee, Nick carries Gina to her bed. He tries to get a few kisses in and Gina wakes up and kicks him out. Nick and Gina are back at war again and Irena reveals that Nick has bought the place next door. Esteban asks Irena to dinner in a classic Spanish restaurant and we get tapas and a nice Asturian white bean dish along with caldo de pescado (fish soup usually with Tilapia) for a starter. Nobody gets any paella and we find out that Esteban used to be married. His wife was a very young 18 and she and the 25 yr old Esteban were from the same village. They got married as soon as she left school, but the young bride wasn't very happy in Madrid away from her family and Esteban was just starting with Caspian International, so he was away on business a lot. His wife got preggers when she was 20, it was a bid to manipulate Esteban into staying home more. The bid to keep Esteban at home failed, cause they weren't exactly wealthy and Esteban was worried about having enough money to support a wife and a family. Esteban started traveling even more for work and his wife refused to go with him. Then she fell while still preggers and both she and the baby died while Esteban was away. Her family then turned on him, for not being there when their only daughter died and Esteban has been carrying around a boat load of guilt in the seven years since. Irena tries to tell him it wasn't his fault and another minor character who knew them both explains that his wife was very spoiled, but even had Esteban been there, the chances he could have saved her were not good. Esteban admits he is attracted to Irena, but then he pushes her away because she is young like his first wife and he is in his thirties. Irena tries to explain that she made it from Spain to Paris on her own, she attends the Sorbonne and plans to have an international career when she graduates as a translator. Esteban doesn't want to know tho and we get back to Daniel and Roz in Cypress. Roz is okay, tho pretty weak from being shot and Daniel proposes at her bedside. Roz is having some PTSD and there is the looming problem that she and Daniel are probably going to have a big war cause he wants her to give up her career and Roz knows she will probably resent having to do so. Daniel's POV is that Roz is still hero worshiping Des, who has disappeared into Vietnam and he wants Roz to just stay home with him. Finally the day of Hazel's wedding arrives and everybody is there to wish them well. Roz is having nightmares, Daniel finds out that Gina isn't as sweet and docile as he thought she was when he sees her give the brush off to an enthralled Nick and Irena has to rush home to Spain as her mum is in hospital and critically ill. Esteban offers to go with her and Nick lets them take his private jet. Esteban and Irena drive through the Spanish night over the mountains and we meet Irena's two younger, very machismo Spanish brothers. Irena's mum had appendicitis but they got her to surgery in time and she is going to be okay. Irena and Esteban have another "I want you but you're too young conversation, " and Irena's mother wants to know what is going on. Des shows up from Vietnam right before Irena has to explain to her mother, Grazia, about Esteban and from the looks of things, Des and Grazia just might be ready to have another fling again. Esteban decides that he does want to try a relationship with Irena, her poise and her maturity have finally convinced him that she is different from his first wife. So we leave Irena and Esteban matched up, Roz and Daniel engaged and Gina and Nick still fighting. Nick had told Gina she had to go to the US with him or lose her seat on the Sentinel's board - which technically can't happen cause Gina still holds an equal amount of shares - but she agrees to go cause Nick wants her to meet his mother and we all wait anxiously (or kinda resignedly,) for the next big installment of the drama of Barbary Wharf.

2.5 stars It seems they are getting worse as the series moves on. I didn't feel any chemistry between Esteban & Irena. I felt there was a some seterotyping of Spanish people. Also, I am not seeing any relationship progress between Nick Caspian and Gina Tyrrell. 2.5 stars It seems they are getting worse as the series moves on.
