Story and Midchannel Press for providing an advance copy of Overwhelmed Writer Rescue: Boost Productivity, Improve Time Management, and Replenish the Creator Within. If I can be saved, there’s hope for all writers drowning in task overload and no writing time to be found. Overwhelmed Writer Rescue is for those of us who have problems related to procrastination, balancing writing time with work and family, or prioritizing projects. We need to learn why we’re struggling and what we can do about it. In chapters on increasing productivity, outwitting productivity saboteurs, and motivation, Story provides exercises and quizzes to help the writer identify roadblocks and develop new methods to manage time and get organized. The author also tells us a little flexibility and a lot of grit are the writer’s best tools for pulling us out of the quicksand and getting our feet on solid writing ground. By reading Overwhelmed Writer Rescue and answering the questions, I’ve recognized (1) how much time I waste and how I waste it, (2) how perfectionism is holding me back, and (3) how a To Do List can be tamed with proper organization and careful prioritization. This book is highly recommended for anyone who’s having difficulty finding time to write or suffering from severe attacks of procrastination even when the time is available and waiting.

I can't tell you how many times I have all these books on my TBR pile and just don't want to read. Or when I'm working on new chapters of a story, or editing books for work, or anything that need the creative juices to flow. It just wouldn't happen and let me tell you that feeling stinks. I have hit the burnout points more than once and it never gets easier. But now, after reading this lovely gem, you can find a way to prevent the burnouts and get yourself back. Since the author has been in this work a lot time you can tell what you're reading is the real deal and she helps ease you back on track with tips that really work. I tried a few of them right off the bat and after a while I could tell things were changing. Now its not huge drastic changes in which you have so much time to be creative you have no idea what to do with all this time. Nope, its simple yet effective and anyone who is overwhelmed should really read this book.

Story, provides sound guidance for boosting productivity and improving the quality of your writing time through clear, practical advice and applications. With simple, but not easy steps, Story outlines ways to restore and reset your creative mindset in a manner that is easy to read and comprehend. Presented in four sections, each one provides sensible, graspable information to help you achieve the writing life you desire. Will Someone Please Give Me More Time to Write? In this aptly titled introduction, Story establishes the crux of the problem: the absolute need for more writing time. The author’s passion and excitement to share what she’s learned with others is inspiring and sets the tone for the rest of the book, instilling confidence in the reader from the very beginning. Throughout the book Story inserts what she calls Time Treasures – exercises and tips designed to help you find more time in your life for writing, and getting the most value out of that time. I found these tips most informative and useful. The first section clearly defines obstacles such as romanticizing what being a writer looks like versus the busy, demanding reality of the majority of writers today. Learning how to accept that we are human and can only do so much every twenty-four hours, Story suggests ways to let go of unrealistic expectations and things that don’t serve our creativity. Part II: Increase Productivity to Expand Your Writing Time provides valuable information on how to prioritize and focus, understanding when your best time of the day is to write, ways to get started writing when you feel like you’re in a slump, and the importance of taking breaks. Of particular interest personally, as I’ve struggled with this my entire life, is the section on learning how to say “no” to others, freeing up time for the things that are important to me. Good stuff. The entire book is well-written, enlightening and inspirational, but if I had to pick a section that resonates most with me, it would have to be Part III: Outwit Your Brain’s Productivity Saboteurs, which outlines the seven specific personality traits that sabotage your most well-intentioned efforts. The way Story describes my individual productivity thieves such as perfectionism, workaholism, and setting destructive goals – it’s almost like she knows me! Seriously though, these chapters will help you understand your biggest stumbling blocks and set you on a more productive course. The final section wraps things up nicely, presenting four skills writers must learn for a long, productive career in writing. Overall, I highly recommend “Overwhelmed Writer Rescue” by Colleen M. Story. I discovered more than a handful of items about myself and my practices that hinder my ability to be my best creative self. I recommend taking your time going through each chapter and section of the book. If there is a survey – take it, if there is an activity or writing prompt/assignment – do it! They are well worth the time! Though geared toward writers, I believe this book would be a successful tool for anyone wanting to learn how to overcome procrastination and your natural productivity obstacles to increase motivation and free up more time for doing the things you love.

Within the first few pages, I was sharing points of the book with my husband. He is not a writer--but, has a number of projects that he works on beyond his "day job". Like so many of us; he struggles to find time to complete everything that he must do in a day--and rarely finds that time for the list of things he would like to do! This book is packed with tips to help the overwhelmed--really no matter the field of employment or creative activity of interest! Story offers much more than time management tips in Overwhelmed Writer Rescue. The author explores a lot of life areas in this book in a very neat and orderly fashion. Readers will learn about distractions (and have the opportunity to examine their own personal productivity distractions), readers will learn about decision making and choices, self care, finding and maintaining motivation--and developing the perseverance needed to keep pushing through toward those life and project goals. Each reader has the option to fully utilize this book's potential for his or her individual needs and goals through the many worksheets and exercises presented throughout the book. Plan to take notes, write in the available prompts and worksheets and make this book work for you. Would I recommend Overwhelmed Writer Rescue by Colleen M. Story? I will admit that I do really (really, really) struggle to find time these days to write anything beyond my daily required assignments and tasks. (I use many of the excuses noted in Colleen's book to justify not writing!) I also have a number of creative projects beyond writing that I would love to complete (refinishing a dining room set, painting and woodworking projects, etc.)--but, am too overwhelmed with the day to day operations of life that I simply never get around to them! I love the advice offered in this book--and I especially love that it is written in a manner that allows me to "tweak" the messages toward my own needs and goals. While this is a wonderful resource for writers and creators--it's also a wonderful resource for any of us struggling with overwhelming, activity filled, chaotic days! I love the author's writing style and her practical, realistic tips. I think anyone could benefit from the self help nature of this book. If you are a note-taker--consider buying the paperback version so that you are readily able to jot notes and thoughts or answer the various questions as you work through the book. I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.

Becoming a published author is no easy task, there are a lot of different things that go into the making of a book. There is research, planing how your story is going to go and then there is the actual writing. Writing takes a lot of time and most people who write have a family and a job that also requires a lot of attention. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and just want to quit on your creative dreams but there is help out there if you’re willing to look. Writing takes a lot of time and most people who write have a family and a job that also requires a lot of attention. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and just want to quit on your creative dreams but there is help out there if you’re willing to look. Overwhelmed Writer Rescue by Colleen M Story is a well researched self-help book that gives great advice on finding the time to write. This book begins with a personal story from Colleen where she recalls attending a dinner with 15 other authors after a writing workshop. Colleen was working as a freelance writer and as a musician but she wanted to see her own fiction published. She was hoping for some good advice on how to manage her time better so she could make her dream come true, but she wasn’t able to find it. Since she didn’t get the advice she wanted, Colleen started to do some research and found several ways to use her time more effectively. One thing that she preaches about here is getting rid of all the little things that eat up your time to be creative. Most importantly you have to limit yourself on social media, turn off the television and stop looking at your smart phone. There are lots of little things that eat away at your time and putting limits on these things will give you time to do what you really want to do. Colleen gives you the tools you need to follow your dreams and she points out that it’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter and time management is the key. There is a lot of helpful information in Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, almost too much. Colleen gets deep into making the most of your writing time and throws a lot of information at you. She also gives you references to back up her advice and questionnaires to help you find the answers you’re looking for. This isn’t the kind of book that you would sit and read from cover to cover but its a great reference book to look at when you need it. I liked how after each chapter there was a summary of the key points she was trying to get across. After she gives you all the detail on what she is trying to teach, she breaks it down into a simpler format that’s easy to reread when you need it. Most importantly this book is not just for writers either, it’s also a good source of info for finding the time to do whatever creative endeavor that you want to pursue. Colleen points out the importance of having a creative outlet and finding your calling in life. In this book she gives you a road map to make you more efficient at making your dreams come true.

Somewhere on this planet may exist a writer who has never felt overwhelmed. For all the rest of us who complain of too little time, too many outside demands, too much pressure to produce, publish, market, rinse and repeat, help is here. In Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, which I had the privilege to read in galleys, author Colleen M. Story offers practical, do-able advice, backed up by solid research. But don't expect a sweeping, one-size-fits-all fix. Story is the first to admit there's no such thing. In fact, it was that realization that prompted her to snoop around for solutions that really work. "Turns out it's not about making some huge, drastic change so you suddenly have oceans of time to create," she writes. "Instead, true creative success is about all the little decisions you make each day that create the difference between wishing you could live your dream and actually living it." In the book's opening chapters, Story urges readers to consider not only how they use time, but even more important, how they think about time. To quote again from the book: "Time is all about perception, and how much you think you have for activities such as writing often has more to do with how you feel than about what actually shows on the face of your watch." She goes on to offer suggestions on increasing productivity—by prioritizing, arresting time thieves and focusing faster—to expand writing time. What most appealed to me about Overwhelmed Writer Rescue was Story's individualized approach. Quizzes throughout the book help readers examine beliefs, doubts and habits to understand which facets of our personalities undermine our efforts and to learn ways of working with, not against, our natural tendencies. Who knew we have distinct time personalities and motivation styles that can affect our creative efforts? Or that boredom can enhance, not stifle, creativity? Or that making fewer decisions in the course of a day saves creative brain power? Instead of offering generic advice, such as "write every day" or "join a writers' group," Story helps readers identify particular practices that best fit particular personalities. Though the book is titled Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, its principles apply just as well to visual artists, musicians and other creative types as to writers. Just reading the book and getting a better understanding of my unique needs as a writer made me feel less overwhelmed. As I put into practice the suggestions on its pages, I feel sure a more productive, less stressful creative life is within reach.

The minute I saw the title of this book I knew I wanted to read it. I've been trying to write my second book but with owning my own business and raising two teens, life is hectic to say the least. Although this book is written primarily with the writer in mind, the advice and tips are useful to any person or creative artist who wants to embark on a creative project and "reconnect with the joy of the creative process". In my case, the author has succeeded in doing this, and doing it well. I felt motivated and inspired as I read this self-help book. The book is divided into 4 parts. The introduction helps one to understand time wasters and what can rob of us of making full use of our creativity. The second part is all about how to increase our productivity with most of the advice useful to anyone. In part 3, the author tackles what she calls saboteurs, 7 things that can get in the way of our motivation, those unconscious things like perfectionism (my problem) and self-doubt. And finally, in the fourth part, the author continues to help us not give up even when we fail. This book is chock-full of information. I had to read it in bits so that I could assimilate the info and put it into practice. I realized early on that the information and exercises were extremely useful in boosting my current work productivity and managing my work and personal time better. I'm happy to say that I was already implementing some of the useful advice, but I learned quite a bit too. I especially loved the chapter on training the brain to focus better and faster. I've practiced the concept of chunking but this chapter really brought the benefits to light. I appreciated that the author backed up her info by including studies, stats and references which is included in the back of the book. She also quotes other books on the same topic. Clearly, the author has done her research. I have a background in psychology and loved learning this info. I am truly impressed with this book. It is well-written, comprehensive and above all, very practical and useful for writers and anyone who wants to make better use of their time and energy. Overwhelmed Writer Rescue is the must-read guide for writers, creative artists and anyone who is determined to accomplish their dreams. It is one of the best resource books I've read on this topic, and I highly recommend it to anyone who dreams of writing a book, starting their creative project or just managing their time better. A keeper on my bookshelf, this book will continue to motivate and inspire me as I dip into it again and again.

Story The Overwhelmed Writer Rescue is a book targeted to those who write, but the tips that author Colleen Story offers can be utilized by anyone who is feeling trapped and short on time when it comes to their own personal creative endeavors. All too often we get caught up in the myth what our perfect life would look like and by focusing all our attention on this fantasy we sabotage our efforts before we can even get started. We dream of all the time we could have if we were solely dedicated to our art and didn't need to support it with additional employment. Colleen provides tricks to change the mindset that is holding us back. Time is a matter of perspective and one that can be affected by our emotional state. Multitasking cuts into our time by providing distractions that thwart us from our goal. And the biggest distraction that compounds the trap of multitasking is ready access to technology. Disconnect and allow yourself to experience nothing and allow your mind free rein to explore and create. By changing your thought processes you can achieve your goals. View time as money. Keep your goals realistic. Take care of yourself. The list of helps is quite impressive. And throughout there are exercises to help you determine your individual strengths and weaknesses and prioritize your time so that you can answer the calling that you have. The cover has the following subheading Boost Productivity, Improve Time Management, and Replenish the Creator Within and I feel that this book does indeed offer much to help the reader to achieve these goals. And these tips can be used for any aspect of one's life whether in a creative endeavor or in the traditional workplace or even in one's home life. One can learn to prioritize the dreaded and endless to-do list and enjoy what lies beyond. What is the passion that you have pushed aside for your 9-to-5 job? Get ready to re-enter the creative life you've been dreaming about. I was provided a review copy of this book by the author with no expectations of a positive review - all opinions expressed are my own.

The reach of this book is quite wide in terms of topics and I loved that she took the time to find proper research to quote that backed up what she was sharing. It wasn't just her ideas, she included studies to bring the message home. There were several crucial to my case specifically, but of all she shared the one that quickly rose to the stop was this The schedule I used when a running a magazine and writing for others has become a habit that is built into my day. It still worked okay when I changed my focus to just writing. But now that I also do SEO for 2 companies and have a variety of things I have taken on for fun, this schedule no longer serves me well. It leaves my writing at the end of the list by which time I lack motivation, am tired and honestly can't do my best work. So it just doesn't get done. It's hard to change habits, but somehow I need to make this happen NOW. This is just one single tidbit in a book chock full of information and tips to move forward. I chose to read it as an ebook, but realize I am going to have to get a hard copy. I'll be going through this one again, taking notes and marking pages. And I just want to say - this book is not just for writers. The principles shared here really relate to anyone with time management and/or procrastination issues

As the author says of herself, I long believed that I just had to find a way to work harder and faster at everything else to make enough time for my writing. Of course, that just left me burnt out and even less productive. The book suggests specific, achievable strategies for combating workaholism (and other forms of self-sabotage) and for carving out more time for writing. Also, I have completed several of the “Time Treasure” exercises at the end of each chapter, and they have been really useful in helping me to, among other things, identify barriers to productivity with my writing and also come up with solutions. Finally, I really appreciated the friendly, conversational tone of the book. Reading it, I felt coached, not preached to.

I really, really enjoyed reading this and recommend it to anyone, not just writers. There is plenty of advice on the health and wellbeing benefits of good time management that anyone can incorporate into their life. I received a galley copy from the author.

I have read one of Ms. Story's books before, a novel, a book of great interest. So, it is that I was excited to read another. This book, however, is not a novel but a self-help book. It is one that I truly needed to read at this particular time in my life when I am so desperately trying to write my own stories. She mentions at the beginning of her book that this is not just for writers but for anyone who is finding themselves pinched for time to do the things they really love to do. The book is divided into sections to help the reader find the time, to not fall into pitfalls that sabotage and to pick one's self up when it does happen. The author includes small boxes of "time treasures" to make the reader think and also includes quizzes to help further understand one's self, all to move forward into (this case) getting that writing done. As I said before, this book has come at a great time for me and I do recommend it. 5 stars.

If you read only one self help book this year - grab this one! It is not just for writers. This book is very motivating and so easy to read quickly. Make some small changes, decide what is most important to you and what actions will move you in the proper direction. No one says it will be easy. However it will be worth it and YOU CAN DO IT. Exceptionally well researched. Reading along and hearing the examples of others who have made changes and followed dreams, found more time in their days, you will feel motivated and supported. As if you have a friend by your side. I did accept a copy of this book for review purposes but the opinions are my own. I am making changes already.

For someone who blogs so much, I do feel that I don't get enough time to write! Yes, there's the whole other aspect of blogging and networking that takes up so much time. Learning to understand why we struggle with saying 'no' and how to say it politely are lessons that will stand writers in good stead. Most creative people need our 'me' time more than others and it's important that we claim it. Reading about how to outwit the productivity saboteurs that most writers face, made me name and own some of my own time wasters. Most of all, I like how Colleen challenges us to answer our call to be writers. As one reviewer mentioned, I'd like to get a hard copy of the book for myself and would recommend it to other writers too.

This is a wonderful book for writers! Any kind of writer. Doesn’t matter if you write books, essays, blog posts, newspaper articles, or just letters. This book can help you get it done. She has a link to a site where you can take a test to find out just how you perceive time. It seems that can make a big difference. I took it. Seems I’m a bit hedonistic, who would have known? Pretty neat test. The books has tips for focusing faster, saying no, tricking yourself into getting started, and ways to not get too tired. Lots of good stuff! Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to do more writing.

Author Colleen M. I thoroughly recommend the title. I will be revisiting the book many times over the coming weeks and putting the advice and exercises into practice. I was lucky enough to receive a galley copy of “Overwhelmed Writer Rescue,” but having read it I would have bought the book anyway - it’s that good. Along with the author’s superb “Writers and Wellness” website, this book will be guiding me on a healthier, more productive, writing life. Thank you!

I enjoyed reading this book. It gave me some good ideas on how to help myself to become more organized in my writing. My dream is to write a book one day and this may just give me the boost I need to get started. Truly helpful book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it (I had a pre-production galley), and was inspired to make changes in my life that have carved out more time than I would have thought possible for writing and other things that matter to me. Overall, I highly recommend “Overwhelmed Writer Rescue” by Colleen M. Story. I discovered more than a handful of items about myself and my practices that hinder my ability to be my best creative self. Wonderful book that'll help any writer (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, freelance, blogger....) organize their time as well as their thoughts. Unlike other books on the subject, author Coleen Story doesn't tell the reader what works for other writers, she guides them on a journey to discover what will work for the writer they see in the mirror. The one that really counts! This is a must-have book for any writer - it's one of the best on the subject I've ever read. I was really excited to read this book and found that while it had some good tips and advice on time management, the majority of the content didn't really apply to my situation because I already am a full-time writer. Instead of trying to carve out time to write, I need to learn how to handle my workload/writing better. It did spark some creative ideas and provided helpful advice to aspiring writers, but I found other general time management books to be more relatable to my craft. Excellent advice This book touched on few issues I was having in my own writing life and offered reasonable solutions that can be implemented right away. Now it's time for me to put some of those solutions into practice. Great book. Highly recommended. One good line: If, on the other hand, you give it all you’ve got day after day, no matter what happens with your work in the outside world, you will feel a renewed sense of peace and calm, because your soul’s calling is being heard. Can I get an Amen?
