   Rabbi Blech’s book contains both the Passover Haggadah with insightful, comprehensive, and informative commentary, which frequently takes up half of every page, and a series of very interesting and educational essays, 23 in total, ranging from four to close to a dozen pages each. The two are in separate sections of the book. The Haggadah and commentary totaling 167 pages begin when one opens the book from the right side, the essays totaling 143 pages begin from the left side opening. The commentary explains dozens of things, such as why Jewish tradition assigns a unique blessing to be said over wine, the symbolism of the wine, why the middle matza is broken in half during the Seder and the bigger half saved to be eaten at the end of the seder, why are four questions asked at the seder and why is it done by the youngest child, what is the significance of mentioning four types of sons, why were the Israelites not in Egypt for 400 years despite a prophecy that this would occur, the secret of Jewish survival, the meaning of the plagues in Egypt, and much more. Among the 23 essays are the following: the five most important things about Passover, the meaning of the fifteen parts of the seder, the miracles of Jewish history, why does Jacob become Israel, the meaning of Shabbat HaGadol: history and destiny, why is bread burned before Passover begins, and more.

   I was a student of Rabbi Blech in the 1970s and his classes in Nachmanides' commentaries on the Torah were fascinating, all the more so because they were engaging and even entertaining. Every year I buy a new haggadah, and this year's it's a pleasure to prepare for Passover with his excellent volume.
