From this chance of a lifetime trip spans a love of travel and a series of world wide adventures across the next forty years. An excellent novel. The photos at the start of each chapter were a nice touch, adding more bittersweet emotion to the story. It also made characters more realistic from the photos and also were a good ay of dividing it which was different. I loved the story and the sense of exploration for the protagonist. Each new location such as Italy or Paris were full of stunning visual detail, as if you were there with the character. as a lover of languages myself. I absolutely adored the linguist side of Anne and her learning new bits of Italian and teaching English. the schools and teachers were perfectly written. the sense of family and Irish heritage was strong and its continuing theme was beautifully described with the feel of a large family in the 20th Century. The sense of adventure throughout was enjoyable and also made you want to read on to see where she went next and what she would experience next. The only issue I would raise is that of punctuation. Without this. at times it felt unfinished and the long sentences made it hard to read. The overuse of exclamation marks felt as if she was constantly yelling which could be reduced, particularly in the first few chapters. If you added a few more commas and cut back on the exclamation marks a little, it would be a perfect novel. Overall, a brilliant read and I would give it four stars.

Celtic Road Home was an inspiring memoir written by Ann Doolan-Fox. Each piece to her story was well described and had such meaning behind them. Starting out with her childhood, the author walks us through what it was like growing up. Her family started out in England and then moved back to Ireland. It was tough for Ann to make friends and her life was not perfect. The way she described her parents and her relationship with them made me feel like I knew exactly what she experienced. Her relationships with her siblings had me reminiscing about how I grew up with my own sisters. Then as the author embarks on her journey through life, she travels through seven different countries. She shares her life’s adventure with the audience in a humorous yet dramatic way. I think what was most inspiring was that no matter how bleak or down a situation may seem, the author was able to twist it into something positive and uplifting. I am a bit envious of the adventure Ann shared with us readers. Being of Irish decent, I would love to travel to Ireland and other countries to experience things I have never before. Having a sister that studied abroad in Madrid, Spain I have now lived vicariously through her stories and the authors stories. Maybe one day I will find myself on an adventure of my own. It takes true courage and guts to do what the author did. I am so thankful she was able to put write out her life story in such an inspiring way. I recommend this memoir to anyone, especially if you want to travel the world from the comfort of your home :)

This is an insightful, deep, well-written, honest, funny and interesting account of an important part of her life. A journey that has led her to where she is today. It contains good advice, whether you are just entering adulthood, or of a mature age- there are lessons to be learned and gems of inspiration to be found. There is some family history, personal life shared to give us more perspective on her story. There are photographs, a recipe and an Irish blessing- all lovely additions to the overall story . I could tell this book has been a labour of love for the author, she has put so much of herself into the story, I admire her outlook on life and the wisdom that comes from her experiences. I also applaud her for chasing her dreams, and never giving up, even when she felt like it. Well worth the read! Thank you for sharing you adventures with us Ms. Doolan-Fox!

Celtic Road Home : A Memoir An honest and amusing book about life changes and taking a chance on new adventures! I really enjoyed reading this book. There were so many things I could relate to. From leaving home in my early 20s to teach English abroad, to picking up languages along the way. I particularly enjoyed the humour in the novel during difficult times. I particularly enjoyed the humour in the novel during difficult times. The author has a way of putting a positive spin on most situations which others would find trying. I liked the way the 70s were portrayed realistically. Many people see the 70s as it is portrayed in the media through rose coloured glasses – a vibrant time. What we forget was that so many people were living in abject poverty, not necessarily the terrible poverty we saw many years previously, but lacking furniture, lacking extra money to buy clothes or goodies that the later generations take for granted. I really liked that this was illustrated in the book as I identified with that. I loved Ann’s portrayal of the cities and places she visited. Having visited Paris, Avignon and a similar French village to the one in the story, it was fascinating to me to have someone describe situations I have found myself in too in the past. I have also hankered after the “American Dream” due to a teenage diet of American sit coms and dramas. Everything always seemed so big and aspirational! A thoroughly enjoyable book, full of humour and pathos. Totally recommended.

I give Celtic Road Home: A Memoir by Ann Doolan-Fox, 4 stars. This was such a wonderful memoir! I have always dreamed of going to Ireland and thought this might be an interesting read. I have read a few biographies but prefer fiction, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. The author starts out at childhood and takes you up to present day. She writes with such passion. She has had such an amazing life full of up and downs and different locations, I couldn't wait to see what would come next. Her optimistic attitude is quite apparent and makes it that much better to read. There are many occasions were some people would be miserable and drowning in sorrow, but she was always able to her positive attitude, knowing everything would somehow turn out fine. The the things she has experienced! You can tell she learned much in her life and loved every minute of it. I enjoyed being taken along for the ride and would love to see what else she has experienced since. I'm sure she isn't done yet! This lovely memoir centers around Ann Doolan and begins with her life in Ireland and branches out into her many travels. This book reminded me of the beginning of Angela’s Ashes (probably just because of all children seemed to find their own ways to amuse themselves when needed) and the book 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson. I feel as if I lived vicariously through Ann’s travels and I think that says so much about being able to connect with individual readers. I’ve always wanted to learn as many languages as possible and have even tried my hand at learning Irish (it’s crazy difficult compared to learning German). As for the writing style, I found it a bit sporadic especially in the first chapter and a few times I had to read portions over again to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. I felt as though there was a lot she added in this book that could have been left out and wouldn’t have changed much except the length. Not a huge fan of when that happens but it’s not me writing it and I’m sure she had her reasons for including what she did. I’m a mess when it comes to vicarious embarrassment so most of that is just on me.

Celtic Road Home is an enjoyable memoir of Ann Doolan-Fox’s exciting life. From early adulthood she has travelled from place, finding ways of surviving and having many wonderful and nail-biting adventures along the way. But I see how that might appeal to some readers, and draw them closer into the story. Celtic Road Home is a fast-paced book - like Annie the reader rarely settles in one place for long. It's exciting to follow her adventures and wonder what she will do next! For me, this book gets four out of five stars. Despite finding the style slightly jarring, I loved reading it on the bus, dreaming of being somewhere slightly more exciting. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves to travel, to read when the gap between adventures starts to feel a bit long!

Celtic Road Home: A Memoir by Ann Doolan-Fox is the true story of her many adventures through seven different countries. It is through this tale that we see the author take life by the horns as it were and set out into the world to find her own place in it. The writing was clean and easy to understand which I really liked. I give this book four stars and recommend it to others looking for something a bit outside their norm.

Celtic Road Home by Ann Doolan-Fox is a 4 star read that I enjoyed escaping with. What I enjoyed immediately upon starting Ann Doolan-Fox’s memoir was the way she told her story as if we were sitting right across from each other, her imagery drew me in instantly. She spoke casually but not in a way that lacked character and depth, I loved her style. The tales were witty and made me smile on more than one occasion. I loved seeing Ann’s travels in photographs and the smiling faces throughout. I ca Celtic Road Home by Ann Doolan-Fox is a 4 star read that I enjoyed escaping with. I enjoyed Ann’s parting words at the end of the book and do see her tale as an inspiration. I would certainly recommend to friends that enjoy honest, heartfelt, humorous reads.

Celtic Road Home: A Memoir by Ann Doolan-Fox is a beautifully written memoir about the journey of life, going to new places and meeting all kinds of people. It is the story of the author’s journey which includes the good and bad that she went through. It was very nice to see the different perspectives of the journey she took. The author’s descriptive language makes you feel as if you were on the journey with her and not just reading it. I always admire anyone who puts themselves out there and writes a memoir. Writing personal encounters and details for the world to share. I have read some that are very vague and are more like an autobiography covering almost their complete life and others where its a very detailed account of an aspect of their life, written as if you are living it with them. Celtic Road Home: A Memoir is the latter . I couldn't put it down, Doolan-Fox didn't spare to hold back any details. It was actually a great motivational read, although I'm not sure that was her intent. I enjoyed reading about her journey across 7 countries, and the positive experiences that she made of each bump along the way. I give Ann Doolan-Fox's Celtic Road Home : A memoir 5/5 stars.

Celtic Road Home is a new memoir by Ann Doolan-Fox and it was such a great read. The book is all about her journey through life, full of mementos and life advice for any age of reader. I think what I liked so much about this book is that the author had the best way of retelling her life experiences that it felt like I was on the journey with her. The way that Doolan-Fox used her own family photos, recipes and evening blessings from her relatives added additional layers of personal touch. Celtic road home by Ann Dolan-fox is a wonderful read. We get a really good sense of this biography as a journey, which it is quite literal in some places. I’ve often found that biographies get bogged down in the descriptions of environments and that has put me off reading them for quite some time, but I was utterly relieved to find that Ann has not done that! The descriptions were concise and fully able to stimulate my imagination without detracting from the emotional and spiritual journey that Celtic road home by Ann Dolan-fox is a wonderful read. Celtic Road Home: A Memoir by Ann Doolan-Fox Stars:4 There are several things I liked about this book. I loved that we got to see each location's culture from Ann's perspective. This was definitely my favorite part of the book. You can tell that Ann put her whole heart into writing her story, and she was able to convey a strong, positive message. She has a great tone and humor as she is writing. It was one of the most enjoyable memoir. The only downside for me is that there were parts that were not Celtic Road Home: A Memoir by Ann Doolan-Fox Stars:4 There are several things I liked about this book. I was amazed at all the excellent reviews for this book. I found it tortuous to read. It was as if the author took all the letters she wrote over the years to family members and put them in a book. There was a lot of daily detail, parenthetical phrases, and personal, seemingly even judgmental, opinion but a complete lack of any literary style. Her life clearly had points of interest but her ability to present them in a readable format was lamentable.
