In the penultimate issue to Dark Knight III: The Master Race, the Kandorians launch a desperate attack on Themyscira – it’s Baal’s Kryptonian army vs Wonder Woman’s Amazonians! Meanwhile back in Gotham, a rejuvenated Batman, fresh from his dunk in a Lazarus Pit, is attempting to stop Armageddon. As expected, DKIII has been a big commercial hit for DC and like most event titles the publisher usually unnecessarily extends them an additional issue or two to sell a heap more comics. That’s what issue #8 feels like: a bit of a pointless comic that got tacked on to force the readership who’re reading the arc to completion to pay for another comic. Artist Andy Kubert makes Wonder Woman look very cool throwing herself into armed combat with the Kandorians, swords flashing with her baby, Jonathan, strapped to her back, blood flying everywhere. But that’s basically the whole comic and it feels like writers Frank Miller/Brian Azzarello are relying heavily on Kubert to make up the page count with the battle scenes. It could’ve easily been a three or four page B-story with the focus on Batman in Gotham. I mean, the series is called Dark Knight not Amazon Princess! The backup, like most of the backups from the series so far, is crap. Yindel faces Bruno in an encounter nobody was looking for. Miller’s art is sketchy at best and the ending is underwhelming. DKIII: The Master Race #8 is a thinly-plotted and utterly peripheral issue in an otherwise decent Batman story. Andy Kubert’s art is strong and Wonder Woman has some badass moments but, considering the steep price tag to these comics, it feels like we’re getting short-changed with this one.

I am now at peace with the fact that this is not a Batman story, despite the fact that it is supposed to be a continuation of Frank Miller's Dark Knight. DKIII has its ups and more downs. The story has winded into something almost incomprehensible as it is dumb, and I am hurt so much to have invested in this nine part series (buying both the single issues and the collected editions. DKIII #8 is a good issue (Wonder Woman rocks!), but it has come way too late to redeem the whole series. But now with a little glimpse of light, but not enough to hope again, DKIII has shown signs of greatness, specifically with two scenes: the car reveal in the Batcave and the Kryptonian vs Amazon battle that filled the pages with blood, shield and spears. DKIII #8 is a good issue, but it has come way too late to redeem the whole series. I am just glad that this ends on May. Less expense in my pocket, the better.

First part with the battle between Amazons and Kryptonians was good, sadly Miller's second story with Yindel and Bruno was not. And series being extended to 9 issues with lots of time between releases is sadly cooling for good my enthusiasm... I knew I had to wait for the TPB! Wow! Maybe my favorite issue of this run. Wonder Woman is so cool! She is one tough warrior! She is on a mission!

Ride of the Valkyries! A lost gem in a very, very bad series.

In the last installment Bruce Wayne ended up mortally wounded which left the earths defending hero's in shock. But Superman has saved Bruce and rejuvenated the Dark Knights returns. Somewhere else the Kryptonites are ready to take the war to Wonder woman and her Amazons because they want the child of her and Clark Kent. And nobody really wants to pick a fight with an angry woman and her angry friends even the folks from Krypton should have thought twice. It will be very bloody. Somewhere else a commissioner from the Gotham police force meets the Joker and his crazy loons and sees how the Dark Knight returns which she does not considers to be great. One more installment and the series is over it has been quite a ride, I will look forward to the next installment. And will then read the tale from the first and ending with the last one of the series. It is easily better than the previous Dark Knight mini series. Even if the series took its time to get published.

I love how universally accepted Wonder Woman as a badass is now, it certainly took the world long enough to acknowledge that.

Back to the Batcave. Fight time for Wonder Woman. She looks happy. Miller bonus story features a topless female nazi. Hmm.
