I only read "Mrs. Dalloway" in this collection for the time being, but I did enjoy the sparse, clean language of Woolf. I don't think in one reading I got the true depth of the story, but the language use alone was enough for me to sit up and take notice. I had watched the movie "The Hours" which motivated me to read this novel. I definitely saw the parallels from the movie to the book, but the book, as any Modernist novel does to me, has much more to offer. I know from my experience that I need to reread "Mrs. Dalloway" a few times to get the full effect of the syntax and language. Modernist writings are work to understand. Upon reading this novel again, I'm sure I'll push up my rating, but for now, beautiful language but a chore to unpack. This is definitely a novel only for those who want to work at their reading.
