Ashlee Chadwick Davenport has been a widow for only a month when she finds disturbing evidence suggesting that her husband Jack--pillar of the community, church deacon, principled businessman--might have been much less honorable than he seemed. There are recordings of anonymous phone calls alleging Jack was involved in unsavory business transactions. Records of shady land deals. And she finds letters that hint at even darker dealings. Worse, from an emotional standpoint, Ashe discovers racy photos of her deceased husband with her best friend. She feels as if her marriage and her life have been ripped away from her. Her whole existence has been built on lies. All she has left is her daughter and the farm that has been in her family for generations. Then, suddenly, even those things are threatened. Jack's death has left her holding something that someone wants very badly. And they'll do anything to get it. Ashe must draw on her ever-growing anger to find the strength to fight Jack's final legacy: an unknown, unseen enemy.

I normally don't like thrillers, but since this is Faith Hunter, who is in my top 10 favorite authors, I thought I would give it a try. I'm glad I did. Gwen Hunter shows the same edge of the seat excitement I enjoy so much in the Jane Yellowrock series. Maybe four and a half. It took a little too really get into this book, and it was a bit on the gory side at times, but by the end I truly loved it. Great characters, excellent mystery, lots of twists and turns!

I'm late into the discovery of Gwen Hunter. Browsing Amazon, I came across "Delayed Diagnosis". I was going on vacation with family and did not want something that would pull me away from what was more important; family. When the fam took off for a day to do their things; fishing, shopping, etc., I stayed back with the dogs. I grabbed the backpack beach chair and filled with water bottles and dog bowl, my Kindle with this book started. I grabbed the backpack beach chair and filled with water bottles and dog bowl, my Kindle with this book started. I, with the dogs walked to the beach and while they frolicked or slept, I became involved in the character of Rhea. When the dogs started pestering me, I looked at my watch and realized three hours had passed. I liked it very well. Instead of continuing with Rhea, I decided to switch characters to DeLange Saga and after reading,"False Truths", I decided to try a new character, Ashlee Davenport. Within a 10 day period, I'd read all three books. My interest continues on to read the next Ashlee Davenport Mystery, "Sleep Softly". What I like in the writing style of Gwen Hunter is her meticulous detail to describe a scene. From the ER to standing in a marsh or boating up the bayou, she is gifted with observation when most people walk through life oblivious to their surroundings. While a lot of writers attempt to describe a scene, there are few who are capable of putting you in the scene. Gwen Hunter is one of these few. With each novel, I'm taken to places I've never personally visited and now comprehend the environment Hunter perfectly describes for the storyline. In reading her bio, it is apparent she has studied the land.

Did not realize this is the prequel to her most recent book, Sleep Softly. I don't think this was ever published in the US and it's from awhile ago so is very hard to find. I was fortunate to find a cheap copy on Amazon.ca. (I'm still trying to figure out why the Zshop, which is located in the US, sold on Amazon.ca and not Amazon.com. But that has nothing to do with the book.) Even knowing how it was going to end, still enjoyable. Not as strong as the DeLande or Dr. Rhea books.
