Another man's beautiful face masks a true monster. Time has passed since Phantom Erik's face was revealed on stage by Christine Daae. Most believe he's dead, but far beneath the Paris Opera he lives in secret, alone. Free from morphine's grip, just as he's preparing to begin a private life above, fate deals an unexpected hand in the guise of a woman in need. Alone and desperate to leave an abusive marriage, classically trained pianist Caitlin Chesnier escapes to the only refuge she knows. With plans in place to start a new life, she's able to breathe easily for the first time in years. But her husband Lucien is violent and manipulative, and he'll stop at nothing to see that she pays for her defiance. Keeping Caitlin safe is no easy task, but along the way, Erik learns that trust, compassion, and love make more beautiful music than loneliness and solitude. Still, he knows too well that monsters are resilient. With more to lose than ever before, he must decide how to fight an evil greater than any he's known.

I really enjoyed this version of the Phantom's life. He is no longer the Phantom, but continues to exist under the Paris Opera. When Caitlin wakes up, she is being treated by Erik for the severe wounds that were inflicted on her. Eventually, Caitlin recovers and is moved to a cottage of a close friend. We watch as Erik and Caitlin begin their relationship, tentatively at first. However, their love strengthens and they marry. There's much more detail in the book, but I feel it's well worth reading.

Actual rating: 4.5 stars This is currently my new favorite retelling of the Phantom of the Opera. This book kind of picks up where the original left off, after Christine leaves the Phantom and he disappears. Caitlin was in the at the theater when the Phantom was unmasked and chaos ensued. Unlike many of the audience members, she was not afraid of the Phantom and actually felt bad for him. Caitlin later ends up in the Phantom's care, suffering from nearly fatal wounds and amnesia, due to an attack Actual rating: 4.5 stars This is currently my new favorite retelling of the Phantom of the Opera. The story develops from there and readers are drawn on an emotional journey as Caitlin heals and a sweet and caring relationship develops between her and Erik.
