Eye of the Dragon picks up exactly where The Caged Wolf ended, and (re-)introduces Krom Dragongaze to the plot. Turns out Krom didn't like waiting at home any longer than he really had to. Thankfully he is engaging to read about, in ways that the restrained Wolf Priest Ulrik is not. Krom is headstrong, eager to take risks to prove himself, and full of himself. Since this part in the series is heavy on action, he fits right in! This time another, unexpected enemy joins the fray: the Dark Eldar. Since this part in the series is heavy on action, he fits right in! This time another, unexpected enemy joins the fray: the Dark Eldar. Things quickly turn south after Ulrik and co realize there is far more to the Great Wolf's disappearance than meets the eye, or what the Changeling claimed. There is little downtime to be had, less introspection, more bolter and frost axe wielding. I enjoyed that for a change of pace, especially in terms of combat variety. My main complaint would be the prose itself. I cannot exactly pin-point what it was, but it did not feel as good as Ben Counter's previous two parts. There were a lot more thought-italics all over, and Ulrik was constantly refered to as Wolf High Priest, which Counter did not do. In fact, searching through the full collection, I believe only two of the involved authors used that term for the Slayer, and only Steve Lyons this consistently. To me, this highlights one of the downsides of serializing a novel through multiple authors. Inconsistencies with tone and phrasing pop up more often than not, and it can take you out of the experience when established characters suddenly shift their way of addressing one another. However, these nitpicks didn't detract from the solid action presented here, and Dragongaze's inclusion shook things up enough to keep me engaged. I don't think I read much about Krom so far, and this story made me want to look into him further, just how the previous installments did for Ulrik the Slayer. Of course, the story also ended on yet another cliffhanger, and a good one at that. I'm in for another piece of the overall story.

The third story in the ongoing Space Wolves serial, Eye of the Dragon sees the reins handed over to Steve Lyons, who picks up where Ben Counter left off at the end of The Caged Wolf. Reinforced by the headstrong Krom Dragongaze, Ulrik the Slayer continues his quest to find the Great Wolf, the Wolves venturing into a ruined city in search of Grimnar. They soon find a new foe however, as Dark Eldar Raiders come between them and their hunt.
