Alive and intact, Kai finds himself relegated to a desk for a while. He’s offered a closer look at another division of the organization he works for, finding himself in a first contact situation with another troubled person involved with drugs who’s decided to make things difficult for her neighbors. Kai took on a role of pre eminence once more when he found himself in the middle of Kyo’s clique, his own ‘switch’ triggering at his anger. Hal showed that he truly does care about his partner for all his brusque coldness. Hiki continues to be as devious as ever while educating his agents in challenging ways to make them more capable. The Kyo arc was one of the most sinister and sad storylines we’ve had yet in this manga, yet it wasn’t quite as tragic as the previous plot. This particular arc grabbed me because there was a lot more of Hal as well as Kai, not that I don’t love Kai. Hal developed, showing layers not previously exposed without being as less driven or snarky. The character of Iku was fascinating, doomed, vulnerable, and yet terrifying, bringing the other characters into orbit around his nightmarish world, bringing into shocking relief its reality. For overall story, character development, and a darkly seductive art style, this gets four stars.
