I bought this book because I’m doing a business venture with an acquaintance and I really needed to know how to make friends in his close knit circle, and how to expand my circle of friends so I could collect more contacts for future reference. My problem is this: I’m an introvert and I don’t get out often. Making friends for me is like working two full-time jobs and trying to take care of a hoard of three year olds. To make a long story short, it’s stressful and overwhelming. My problem is this: I’m an introvert and I don’t get out often. Making friends for me is like working two full-time jobs and trying to take care of a hoard of three year olds. To make a long story short, it’s stressful and overwhelming. It seems almost impossible to me sometimes because I just don’t get people. I believe my hardest problem is making conversation without talking too little or talking too much. I always come off as odd or inattentive. So I reread the chapter on how to make conversation several times before I tried it out. I even went through the exercise of practicing mindfulness. Once I was comfortable with my own thoughts and able to recognize them for what they were, I moved on to making conversation with my local grocery store cashier. At first, I followed the book’s recommendation about asking her how she was. When I saw her about a week later on my usual shopping day, I complimented her on her hair. Turns out it’s natural and she doesn’t dye it. It’s amazing how much people will open up once you’ve complimented them, and I’ve come to count her as an acquaintance. Once I felt comfortable talking to cashiers at stores, I moved on to making casual conversation with my business partner’s friends and acquaintances. This week I’ll be attending a club meeting for people who like to read, and I’ll be using all the practices this book taught me to find myself even more friends. If I hadn’t picked up this book, I’d still be at home, most likely not working with my acquaintance on our business venture, and friendless.

A fresh and blunt tool to combat introversion. No friends? By using new ideas and ideas maybe the reader didn't realize, the author pushes you to think of situations differently and in a more positive and opportunistic light. I especially liked the idea of walking into a room and instead of seeing the people there as strangers, you should see them all as potential friends (Chapter 4). Honestly that idea had never crossed my mind, but it makes perfect since. If I had used that way of thinking earlier I'm sure I'd have more friends at this point in my life. Another point I liked in this book is the term "the tribe" is mentioned throughout the book to describe human emotions and our natural motivation to be surrounded by our own. Knowing the primal urges of a human certainly makes you feel better about what you may think is your pathetic need to belong. It's nature and not pathetic at all! This book has many great points, exercise (yes, like homework) and ideas to aid you in becoming the social butterfly you've always dreamt of and I'd recommend it for anyone who might have a little trouble reaching out to others and making successful connections.
