Excellent book for pre marital counseling. Jon has a great section on expectations. Thought provoking questions throughout the book for couples to discuss.

The Village Church uses this book to mentor engaged couples before their weddings, which is how I came upon it. It is a really solid introduction to marriage, with a lot of tough questions that need to be discussed. I highly recommend it for the engaged and the newly married. My husband and I enjoyed going through some of the questions together, and we both would have benefitted from it even more had we gotten it sooner. I also found the Calvinist/Reformed perspective to be a bit heavy handed.

This book was awesome and extremely beneficial in laying some good foundations before my wife and I got married. It prompted us to have conversations that normally would have not taken place until something would have caused them too.

Second book I've read this year (Francis Chan's was the other) in preparation for marriage and it was very helpful in establishing expectations as well helping myself probe into thoughts that would better prepare me to be a Husband. I've been married for 16 years and over that time have learned a lot about myself and about the joys and difficulties of marriage. I'm certainly no expert but have a few years of experience. I think Henderson deals with the right issues in marriage and does so from a heart-oriented approach. He rightly talks about the importance of a gospel-centered understanding of life is the foundation for a healthy marriage. On this point, I love the book. It is extremely helpful and good. My only complaint in the book is that he deals with the difficult parties of marriage (i.e. catching the foxes), but doesn't pause along the way to celebrate the joys of marriage. My wife and I used this book to do pre-marital counseling with a couple and we found ourselves continually having to say something like, "I think what Hendersons says here is spot on, but let's not forget that marriage is a GREAT gift from God. It's so good, and it is worth every bit of effort to deal with these harder issues."

Great book. Aimed at those who are engaged/about to be married. Wonderful combination of clear, realistic advice, careful questions, and joyful encouragement, Henderson is a sure-handed guide throughout the book. I personally benefitted from his counsel and discussion questions. Plan to use heavily in future premarital counseling (and probably some marriage counseling) Recommend to engaged and newlyweds, and those walking alongside those folks.

Getting married soon? This biblically-saturated workbook by a smart Christian counselor will help you and your future spouse discuss necessary issues that can derail a marriage. Highly recommended for all soon-to-be-newlyweds.

We are using it for Premarriage mentoring. It has been great for us to read also, even after 42 years of marriage. I think this. By far the best book on marriage.

This book is a must read for all engaged couples or those thinking of becoming engaged. It will also be helpful for those newly married. It is only then, can we have an accurate view of ourselves and then our relationship with our future spouse. I read this book as a woman married 18 years. I’ve learned these truths over the years, but our marriage did not start on this foundation. The first several years of marriage were rocky and we struggled. Thankfully, we had solid teaching and great mentors along the way to guide us into a Christ centered marriage. As I kept reading, I nodded my head in silence as I was affirming all I’ve learned in the past. John Henderson shares some great truths that are timeless. The book has questions in each chapter that help you analyze your relationships while at times, also providing a checklist for you to review with your future spouse. It has very practical ways to evaluate your current thoughts and feelings on various marriage topics. I wish my husband and I would have known these truths before we married. I truly believe that had we known some of this, our early years wouldn’t have been so rocky. I would definitely recommend this book!

This is a great book that helps Christian couples address many issues (their pasts, family life, expectations, ideals, etc) before they walk down the aisle. There is so much to marriage that we most of us cannot even fathom when we first start out. I think couples working through this will gain much insight into each other and into themselves (self-awareness is so key!). It does take for granted that both people are firmly planted in God's Word. Some may be turned off by the abundance of Christianese language.

I was excited to read this book as I have a family member getting married this year, and I didn't feel like there were books like this available when I was getting married. This book really is a good tool for getting ready to enter into a Christ centered marriage. I love that the author lays the foundation and then asks probing questions to guide discussion between the engaged couple and the mentors. I highly recommend this book to any engaged couple. Wow, this book was intense! Intense in a good way, I highly recommend this book for an engaged couple. It's obvious the author knows what he is talking about. A real and honest look at what marriage is truly supposed to be, a gift from God. There are even questions in the book for the engaged couple to go over. If a couple would honestly do the work inside of this book and read it together, I really think that we would have far less divorces. Again, I highly recommend this! Wow, this book was intense! I enjoyed the discussion questions presented throughout the book and not just at the end of chapters. These questions helped the book feel more like a guide and tool then just something to read and forget. In addition, Henderson does a great job of emphasizing the need for Gospel heart change instead of mere communication techniques. He frequently encourages prayer, additional Bible reading, and digging deeper into sins of the heart.

Catching Foxes is a biblically focused approach to the marriage covenant. It is sound in its doctrine and principles that John Henderson seeks to convey to couples. It was not the most useful or enjoyable marriage literature to Zach and I, we preferred the Prepare and Enrich Curriculum and Francis and Lisa Chan's marriage book. Scripture based, practical, important wisdom for couples preparing for marriage. This book reminds the reader of God's promises for marriages based on His Word. There are real life examples given in the book and also, worksheets to help with preparing for the future. Great resource. I received a copy of this book and this is my personal honest opinion. EXCELLENT STUDY OF MARRIAGE FROM A BIBLICAL POINT OF VIEW The author does a great job of exploring every aspect of the marriage relationship from a biblical perspective. There is hope and encouragement in understanding marriage from God’s perspective. Henderson helps us understand how to practically apply God’s truth to the day to day, moment by moment life experienced by a husband and wife.

This book is solid in the sense that it gives clear Bibilcal foundation and counsel to couples, in particular pre-married, on the prinicples of marriage. Where it lacks is that it is not super engaging for the reader. It seems more designed as a book that a Counsellor and mentor couple might work through with a young couple.

A gospel focused look at marriage. I liked seeing and thinking about my marriage from a more spiritual perspective. Would have been nice to have a bit more practical aspects, but that was of course not the focus.
