I think I would have really enjoyed this when I was 7; I probably would have worked my way through at least 50 books in the series (along with Famous Five, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Trixie Belden, Three Investigators etc.). I suspect Miss 3 will enjoy these when she's older. She wasn't quite so enamoured at the moment (she got bored whenever the scenes shifted away from the main mystery plot to American Football). Happy Birthday Gertrude Chandler Warner - April 16, 1890. I realize this particular edition of The Boxcar Children was not written by Gertrude Warner, but I was pleased to see the stories are continuing. Some day I would like to visit the Gertrude Chandler Warner Museum, in Putnam, Ct.

I enjoyed this book much more than the other mystery I chose to read this week. However I still found it to be a simple read, and yet again I realize that this book is intended for a young age group who are beginning readers. I did enjoy that fact that the author took this interesting opportunity to include moments for vocabulary expansion. There are moments throughout the story when the older siblings must define or describe a word or idea to their younger brother. There are moments throughout the story when the older siblings must define or describe a word or idea to their younger brother. I think it is a great idea to incorporate this in this story because most children will not expect it while reading. I also enjoyed that it brought in ideas and traditions both from the past and from different cultures. Throughout the book you see glimpses into past traditions in college and a basic view into different cultures when they children go to the sandwich shop.
