His previous publications have been magazine and newspaper articles, except when he was an editorial contributor in 1983 on the science of ballistics for Collier's Encyclopedia. He attended Holyoke Community College before burning out and entering the U.S. Army near the end of the Vietnam War as a nuclear weapons technician.
