I was a goodreads first reads winner of this book. I would give it an "almost four" this book has a lot of information about some of the more famous song writers in Nashville. These men have written some of the most famous songs over the last forty years. they have written some songs that went to number one on the charts for some of the most famous country singers in Nashville. I like country music but my husband is the big country music lover in our family. So lucky for me we actually have a lot of the songs mentioned in this book. I liked this book for the most part but must say I am disappointed that all the song writers are men. NO WOMEN SONG WRITERS at all and i know there are some out there Such as Dolly Parton. anyway I did recognize quite a few songs talked about in this factual book. some of my favorites are: "Always on My Mind" written by Wayne Carson, "Wind Beneath my Wings" Jeff Sibler, "He didn't Have to Be" by Kelley Lovelace "{ love this touching song about step fathers} the Straight life" by Sonny Curtis, A side note about Sonny Curtis is he also wrote the theme song "love is all around" for the Mary Tyler Moore show. a fun fact for me. I also liked the fun song "this song is driving me crazy:|" by Tom T. hall. there are about 20 songwriters featured in this book. It was interesting to read about how they came up with some of the very popular songs. this book mentions just about every country singer in Nashville, such as Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Brookes and Dunn. toby Keith just to name a few. I liked this book for the most part. wish they had included some female writers. if you like country music and would like to know more back ground on how these songs came to be, you may like this fun fact filled book.

It if full of engaging stories and encouraging tips that are sure to inspire any aspiring songwriters. Favorite Quote: “ (from Ashley Gorley) So here’s a song, it’s done. There’s no choice but to write another one; there really is no other alternative but just to write. We have to. I’d write even if I didn’t get paid for it - and I did for years.”

It's interesting to learn about the making of a hit song, and what a songwriter goes through to have a song recorded. After I read this book, I started listening to country music again. NASHVILLE SONGWRITER: THE INSIDE STORIES BEHIND COUNTRY MUSIC’S GREATEST HITS is fascinating reading for those who want a peak behind the scenes. This book is filled with interesting stories of the men (sorry, there are no women invited to this dance) who have penned some of the best country songs in the last fifty years. Unless you obsessively read the liner notes you may not recognize more than one or two of the writer’s names, but you will know the songs and the performers who sang them. Unless you obsessively read the liner notes you may not recognize more than one or two of the writer’s names, but you will know the songs and the performers who sang them. But the tales behind the music will fascinate, charm, perhaps in a case or two go so far as to disgust you, but always leave you wanting more. There could have been a better edit on the copy I read as some of the “facts” played a little loose with the truth, but in all a good look at what it takes to be successful in the music biz. I won this book through Goodreads.

I thought I would like this book, but it read more like a collection of interview notes rather than a story. The abrupt shift from a narrative to blocks of quotes from the actual songwriter made this feel choppy and sloppy. I would rather read newspaper or magazine stories or even a Q&A (which can be an effective writing technique for this type of story) than a chapter that goes back and forth between a story and notes.

Jake Brown’s Nashville Songwriter is a fun read. I think it is always neat to find out the back story of songs, stories, poems, etc. It helps to put the writing in perspective. It is a quick read and I’d recommend it to any country music lover. NOTE: I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
