(I studied the introductions to each historical period and read some of the content for a university class on American literature.) This is unquestionably an excellent anthology, as it provides clear introductions that help readers place each work in its proper historical and social context, and it is particularly commendable for the effort it makes to integrate the works of minorities and lesser-known authors to those of the more renowned writers. In fact, the only flaw I can find with it is of a (I studied the introductions to each historical period and read some of the content for a university class on American literature.) This is unquestionably an excellent anthology, as it provides clear introductions that help readers place each work in its proper historical and social context, and it is particularly commendable for the effort it makes to integrate the works of minorities and lesser-known authors to those of the more renowned writers. In fact, the only flaw I can find with it is of a practical nature: the pages are incredibly thin—Bible-like—which can be pretty inconvenient for students who need to highlight the most important information. Other than that, top marks.

I'm not a huge fan of early American literature, but this book did have some author miniature biographies to keep things interesting. It was for my American literature class that centered around crisis; I learned from it and read, at least, some very interesting short stories and poetry.
