Children of every age will delight at the tales of Santa and his elves in Eleanor Cairns Humphrey's Crystal Cave series. In the second book in the series, Building Santa's Work Shop from Tales of the Crystal Cave, Humphrey introduces readers to the story of how Santa's North Pole workshop came to be. Having forged a partnership in the first book, Santa and the elves from the Crystal Cave have become great friends and allies as they overcame the nasty Pittitrolls. The elves are master toymakers. Using their skills, they will aid Santa in making toys for the children of the world, but Santa's cottage is too small for all of them and the toy workshop. Children will love to have this story read to them over and over again and once they can read on their own, it will be like an old friend that they will often return to. The illustrations are detailed and rich and do justice to the characters and events of the book. While children will be delighted and caught up in the story, parents will be happy that they are ultimately learning important lessons about dedication and forgiveness. Only as a team can the elves accomplish their goals of building their workshop and then making the needed toys. Each elf has unique character traits that children will recognize in themselves and others, but no matter how annoying some of those traits can be, the elf family needs each other. Humphrey also uses the tale to tackle tough lessons of guilt and forgiveness with the little elf, Muser. She's a likeable character that children will easily be able to understand. Through her journey and troubles, they will be able to have an understanding of complex issues that they will likely face. For the parent looking for good quality stories with a strong moral compass, they will be more than pleased by Building Santa's Work Shop from Tales of the Crystal Cave, and children will be delighted by the characters and story behind the familiar Christmas tale.
