**Note: This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. I have been gluten-free and dairy-free for many years and when the author asked if I would like to read her book and review it, I eagerly said yes. I have been 50% raw in regards to my diet and I do a lot of juicing and smoothie-making as a way to get good nutrients into my body in a tasty way. I have been 50% raw in regards to my diet and I do a lot of juicing and smoothie-making as a way to get good nutrients into my body in a tasty way. I was eager to see what Elizabeth Swann's book contained to further my knowledge and desire for tasty ways to health. This book contains several really good recipes for green smoothies and the understanding of why you would want to include them in your daily diet. The amount of nutrients we get from green things is such a boost to our health and nutrient-intake that adding them to our diet through tasty smoothies seems like a no-brainer. The book contains basic information on how to get started, why to add them into your diet, and the best ways to go about making a "proper" smoothie (ratios, techniques, etc.). I am not a fan of chemical sweeteners, so I wasn't excited to read the inclusion of Splenda as an option, but for many, this works for them. The author is giving it as an option. I liked that each chapter (for the most part) carries different kinds of recipes, but only a few chapters included the nutrition information such as calories, etc. That information seemed to wane as the book went on into "low calorie" and "vitamins" which was kind of surprising since the author is a naturopath with a specialty in nutrition. This information doesn't matter much to me, but the continuity - or lack therof - was strange. Minus grammar and editing issues, the book itself is put together pretty well. There's lots of different kinds of info - my favorite being the inclusion of the breakdown of various kinds of smoothie components, particularly the nutrition info about the various greens suggested: parsley, kale, bok choy, spinach, etc. Very informative. It's a small, simple book with a lot of information and suggestions, as well as the author's opinions about including green smoothies in your diet. There's a freebie in the back of the book and plenty of getting started info. It's a great starter for anyone interested in adding green smoothies to their diet or starting on the pathway to health.

This is a book that helped me to get my husband and family eating leafy greens daily. We have increased our daily servings of fruit, too. The secret with my kids was to make their first two smoothies without telling them that they contained Romaine lettuce or spinach. After they said, "this is good" and wanted another smoothie, I told them about the greens. They still wanted more. Now we are eating healthier as a family and feeling much more energy. I received this book free in return for a review. It’s a great, little book. (I especially love little books, as they’re so easily read.) Its most important feature is the obvious one – that it introduces (at least to me) the concept of “green smoothie”. The addition of “greens” - leafy green vegetables such as baby spinach, kale, parsley, bok choy, collard greens, dandelion greens, romaine lettuce, cilantro and mustard greens (what are these?) - to your smoothie will greatly improve its nutrition I received this book free in return for a review. The addition of “greens” - leafy green vegetables such as baby spinach, kale, parsley, bok choy, collard greens, dandelion greens, romaine lettuce, cilantro and mustard greens (what are these?) - to your smoothie will greatly improve its nutritional value. You should work your way up to 3 cups of chopped greens per day, and at least 7 varieties of greens per week. I learnt from this author what bok choy is – Chinese cabbage. I’d seen it mentioned several times but had no idea what it was. They don’t sell dandelion greens in the shops in this country (Denmark) - I wonder if they do so in other countries? I know how healthy they are, but not, I think, if they’ve grown at the side of a road where cars are whizzing past. Greens are believed to prevent cancer and heart disease. At the moment I can’t actually get hold of any of the greens mentioned grown organically, and I prefer to use organic vegetables, as the author also recommends. Perhaps I will be able to get hold of some later. I would like to know whether we can use other types of lettuce than romaine because other types are available here organically grown. I suppose I can just try them. I think I will try the recipe entitled “Berry broccoli green smoothie”, which contains 1 banana, frozen and peeled, ½ cup blueberries, frozen, 1 cup broccoli spears, frozen and ½ cup water or crushed ice. Elizabeth states: “ This one has the ability to slow the progression of degenerative diseases. It is low in calories and filled with fiber, vitamins and antioxidants.” Elizabeth provides us with lots of valuable information about detoxifying. However, I had understood that if one wanted to detoxify one should use a juicer and not a blender, since detoxifying requires getting rid of all the fibre as we do when using a juicer. Have I misunderstood something? Perhaps this matter could be explained in a later edition of the book! There are two chapters on weight loss, including one with weight loss smoothie recipes. We are advised to use one of the author’s smoothie recipes as a meal replacement, should we want to lose weight. Together with the chapter on detoxifying recipes and weight loss recipes, there’s one on de-stressing recipes, one on energizing recipes, mood enhancing recipes, immune boosting recipes, recipes for hair and skin health and one on customizing our green smoothies. Elizabeth gives us the benefit of her extensive knowledge of health-giving fruits, vegetables and other healthy foodstuffs. I’m glad she mentions coconut water, one of my favourite healthy liquids. However, I must object to her recommendation of Splenda, a dangerous sugar substitute, No. 2 on the list of dangerous artificial sweeteners after Aspartame. Stevia, which she also mentions, is much more preferable, though I have read that there may be some problems with it too, though it is a natural substance. Nonetheless, I would highly recommend this book, which is written in a fresh, simple and easy-to-read style.

The author, Liz Swann, reached out to me a few months ago to request a review for her book, and I'm so glad she did! She had seen my review of The Raw Food Detox Diet and thought I might be interested in her book. When I read The Raw Food Detox Diet a couple of years ago, I was beginning my journey into eating a healthier diet. At that time I had tried a few green smoothie recipes and enjoyed them, but found that making green smoothies required planning ahead in order to be sure to have the exact right ingredients on-hand (...or so I thought!). After a few tries (and a few bad smoothies), I just kind of gave up. And then came The New Green Smoothie Diet Solution! (Don't let the title fool you. This is NOT a "diet" book.) Being the impatient person that I am, I first skimmed the book for a few recipes that sounded good, jotted down a number of ingredients on my grocery list and quickly discovered that I didn't get enough of the right things to make any of the recipes I had seen. DO NOT DO THIS! I then resorted to sitting down and reading the book start to finish, skimming over the recipes as they appeared in each chapter and marking the ones that sounded good so I could try them later. I would estimate it took me about 2 hours of actual reading time. Then I started with a few of the basic smoothies at the beginning of the book (just 2 ingredients each). I tried one each day at lunch and quickly realized that making yummy green smoothies was SUPER easy. Once I had mastered the basic green smoothie, I moved on to some of the more complicated recipes -- they weren't really "complicated," but required a few more ingredients which I needed to add to my shopping list. I found all of the recipes I tried very good. Ms. Swann encourages readers to make a green smoothie for one meal per day. I resolved to make a green smoothie every day for lunch. I found that cutting up the fruit over the weekend saves me time during the week and have been amazed by how much fruit and veggies I consume in one day just by making a smoothie rather than skipping lunch, eating leftovers or snacking on chips throughout the day, which was my normal routine before I resolved to drink a green smoothie every day. If you are interested in eating healthy or learning how to make delicious smoothies for you (and your family), this is definitely the book for you!

For all those who are thinking, "oh , this is just another filled recipe book of smoothies" , think again as Elizabeth has included not only recipes of all your favourite green smoothies and to make it more fun she has categorised them into particular sections from Weight Loss Smoothies to De-Stressing Smoothies and Mood Enhancing Green Smoothies. What I liked about this book was that Elizabeth knows her stuff and has included several personal anecdotes in the book about her experience with Green Smoothies and why she choose to target this niche. Another favourite of mine is that she has also included a beauty section with smoothies to help bust that acne and also make yourself a "whole brand new you" and for the alkies in here or those people that still enjoy a happy hour now and again, there is a customisation recipe of a Bloody Mary Green Smoothie. So if you are wanting a book that will help in ALL aspects of your life and not just sit as another recipe book on your shelf then go forth and check out The New Green Smoothie Diet Solution by Elizabeth Swann.

Great little book with lots of recipes for green smoothies. I liked the author's approach to making the smoothies and also the use of mostly accessible and available fruits and vegetables that are not too exotic or rare. She has an introduction to the beginning of each section which divides up her recipes into categories. I do wish there were more about her thoughts and her approach and her use of recipes in her own life. This was mainly just a recipe book.
