I'm just not sure I like the message in this one. Olivia didn't get her way at first, and she didn't like the color of the team's jersey, so she made her own uniform in a different color (which happened to be the same color as the opposing team), and confused everyone during the playing of the game. What kind of message does it send about good sportsmanship that she eventually got what she wanted? I'm just not sure I like the message in this one. Olivia is on the soccer team, but since she doesn't get the red shirt, she is not excited about it. She is absolutely certain she would play much better, if only she didn't have to wear a green shirt. So, she wears a blue shirt and shorts from home, but the other team is wearing blue striped jerseys. That leaves her team feeling confused, so she doesn't get the ball passed to her. After that game, the team pretty much blames the goal, Francine--who wore the red shirt--for the loss. Turns out, Francine doesn't want to be the goalie, since she is not good at it. So, Olivia gets to be the goalie, and wear the precious red shirt, and it turns out that Olivia is an amazing goalie. -------------- I liked this book, but felt that Olivia placed too much importance on the color of shirt she had to wear. I don't think the shirt color you wear actually has anything to do with how well you play soccer.

I'm pretty sure I saw this Olivia episode some years ago -- I am SO not bragging. This book reads pretty much like the television episode, but it is still better than some "based on TV show" books (yes, I'm looking at you, Franklin). Olivia is a bit too into fashion for her soccer team, but finds the correct solution for the next game.

Another good "easy read" that really is easy to read. It is also great in showing that being part of the team means cooperating and supporting your teammates. The story is about Olivia playing soccer for the first time. The text is short and simple to read. It can be a useful book to introduce concepts of sports, teams, team uniform, losing and winning.

I enjoyed. my daughter enjoyed this book as well. I like how the words were simple for her to understand and she was trying to pronounce some of her sight words.
