4.5 stars Scott Blackstone is sure life could get worse, but he’s not sure how, since after his grandmother’s death his father has decided to move the family from Springfield, Illinois, to Custer, North Dakota, in order to run the family businesses. After arriving in Custer and enrolling in school, Scott discovers the football team has had losing season 4.5 stars Scott Blackstone is sure life could get worse, but he’s not sure how, since after his grandmother’s death his father has decided to move the family from Springfield, Illinois, to Custer, North Dakota, in order to run the family businesses. Moving just a month before starting his junior year and a spot as a starting safety on the football team is just “craptastic” in Scott’s opinion. After arriving in Custer and enrolling in school, Scott discovers the football team has had losing seasons the last two years, so at least he should have no problems getting on the team. Classes seem to be in order, and he even managed to enroll in advanced on line classes in geometry and American literature at Black Hills State University, so maybe things aren’t going to be so bad after all. Scott takes off on a drive to check out the local lakes to find some good fishing spots for him and his father, when he spots a beautiful teenage girl seemingly controlling an alligator! Now you don’t see that every day. Scott is intrigued. A series of events lead Scott to meet the girl, Gwen Webber, and despite her best efforts, he manages to gain her friendship. Scott’s life becomes anything but boring as he gets involved in Gwen’s families heritage and learns that, as his father likes to say, “life is just fickle sometimes.” I’ve read Mr. Primo’s Sunset series, and was a little apprehensive about whether he could switch gears from mature adult to young adult, and not lose his slightly offbeat style that I loved. I shouldn’t have worried. While maintaining the essence of what is Jaz Primo, he has translated it into a wonderful story full of the beauty of the Black Hills, mixed with small town life with all it’s wrinkles and added a twist of paranormal. We meet the wonderful characters that make up small town life – the local sheriff, the gossiping cheerleaders, the macho jock football players, the kind-hearted doctor, and visit the small café where you can get the best chocolate pie ever made. Leading the team of characters is young Scott, one heck of a good guy. He is a darn good safety on the football team, makes good grades, is liked by all and totally intrigued by Gwen from the moment he sees her. He will not be deterred by her stubborn refusal to let him in, and goes after her with a tenacity that would make any young girl’s heart flutter. Gwen resists him as long as she can, but he slowly works on her until she drops her shields. When we first meet Gwen we know her as a shy, sarcastic, beautiful, broken young girl. We soon learn to there is more to Gwen than the public sees, and just like Scott, we become intrigued with her. Any parent would be busting at the seams with pride to have either one of these kids as their own. Mature readers, (old people to teenagers) should not be put off by the fact that this is listed as “YA”. I’m a number of years past young adult, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Mr. Primo not only gives us a glimpse into the lives of Scott and Gwen, he gives us some suspense, some laughter and for those paranormal lovers out there, some “woowoo” as well. My one little issue, was that there are a lot of detailed football scenes and I’m not sure your average teenager, or even adult, female is going to appreciate them. I’m the only girl with five older brothers, my only child is a boy, I live in a small southern town that happens to have a major SEC University in it, and I’ve been to a football game or two in my life. I appreciate a good football scene, but eventually I started thinking enough was enough with the play by play. It actually confused me as to how to rate the book. Is the audience young men? If so, 5 stars, they will love the football. If the audience is young women, they may find the football a bit much, I would have to go 4.5 stars for them. Given I’m neither of the above; I just had to go with my gut, so thus my rating. Any way you look at it, I think anyone is going to find this a good book; Mr. Primo scored a touchdown with this one (I couldn’t resist). Member of The Paranormal Romance Guild Dual Review Team

The move came right before the start of his junior year where he had a starting position on the football team. Things seem to be going sour but he learns that the new school’s football is in need of players and he has no problems enrolling in advanced classes. His eyes are attracted to the beautiful and very mysterious Gwen Webber and he is highly intrigued by her presence. They eventually become friends and Scott gets heavily involved with Gwen’s peculiar family heritage. The male point of view of this amazing paranormal story is a nice shift from the abundance of female viewpoints available. The characters of this small town provided much spark into the story. Scott Blackstone is your typical good guy teenage boy. He makes good grade, plays football and like many boys his age, eyes the pretty girls that intrigues him. Beneath Gwen’s beauty, it is obvious that she is broken but has something captivating that wants to reach the surface. Readers will have the same level of interest Scott has for Gwen. Jaz’s writing style continues to shine in this book. He provides rich and crisp description of not just the environment, but also the personalities of each character. The breath-taking storytelling will make readers want to be a part of the book. It travels through an array of emotions making readers laugh and cry. This is one of those stories that will have readers flipping through the pages quick so that they will be able to find out what will happen next. Gwen Reaper is a highly interesting paranormal story that will absolutely satisfy any reader and leave them wanting for more.

In my humble opinion, Gwen Reaper (A Young Adult Paranormal Romance)is an engaging and unique YA paranormal romance that captures readers' imaginations while also offering them something unique. For example, the novel is written from the young male’s perspective, Scott, who is pursuing the captivating and mysterious Gwen. The story unfolds in the quite-real, small town community of Custer, South Dakota. I hope that readers will enjoy Gwen Reaper! 5*****Stars Jaz Primo has been a favorite of mine since I started reading his Sunset Vampire series years ago. His ideas are always one step ahead, with a different take on the vampire stories. His Alpha in that series is a woman, Katerina Rawlings, who has a human love interest integral to the storyline. It is definitely Not YA, so I was really surprised (in a good way) to see another choice added to his repertoire, a YA story with a male POV. Hmmm interesting. We meet Scott Blackstone, teenager, just about to enter into his junior year of high school. His family has made a not so unanimous decision to leave Springfield, Illinois, and move to a very small (population 3000) town of Custer, North Dakota. The decision was made with the passing of Scott’s paternal grand parents, leaving the business that has been in the Blackstone family for generations. Scott was not too happy. He had a girl, was a member of the football team, to him “ this was craptastic.” Arriving in Custer, he enrolls at the local high school. To Scott’s chagrin, he finds that there is a football team, but not a good one, not like the team or the league in Springfield. The good news is, with his experience, he is a shoe in for being a starter. His classes are good and he even has two classes online that give him credits to Black Hills State University. His Dad comes through with the keys to a vehicle, so things might be looking up. Scott decides to take a spin and check out the tow, stopping by one of the lakes to check out the fishing he and his Dad plan to do. Walking around he sees a very pretty teenage girl, seeming to be talking to a log. It moves and he realizes it looks like an alligator. Feeling this is too strange, he puts it out of his mind. At school he looks for the pretty girl, with no sign of her. Fate intervenes when his Mother, who is a nurse, gets a job with the local Doctor... Who could have guessed that the doctor was the pretty girl's mother? ...See what the fickle hand of fate does? Scott finds out Gwen is home schooled and by asking questions of his classmates, he finds out there is quite a mystery surrounding pretty Gwen, which peeks his interest even more! Jaz Primo has an easy story telling voice, and spins a story of a really nice, open, sincere Scott Blackstone. We meet him every Friday night, playing the game he loves, football, as he and his team mates work together to put together a rather outstanding team. Scott also works gently at another thing on his agenda, the winning of Gwen Webber. From the moment he saw her he liked her. From what he heard about her he was intrigued. She was skittish as a colt, and he wormed his way into her heart by his calm demeanor and his no nonsense attitude. Gwen trusts him more and more, and tells him things she has never told another. The love story is quiet, trusting and beautiful. The other characters are also from another world. Small town folks with good moral fiber and living a simpler life. This does not mean it is boring, there is always work for the small town sheriff, and we need him for the mysterious turn the story takes. I loved the story, and I am never too old to read a good YA book. I am a football couch potato, and my only thought as I read this story, was that by the third Friday night football game, as Scott and his team ground down the field, with all the play by play, I wondered if a teenager, especially a girl, would appreciate this. It did not detract for me, and I wondered if Mr Primo was living vicariously through Scott Blackstone... It will have you staying awake till - let me check - yep, it's almost 2:00 am and I just finished reading it. :) Enter our young couple, Scott and Gwen, for whom I was pulling from the get-go. A horrible and somewhat mysterious family tragedy a few years ago leaves Gwen a very reserved and withdrawn teenager. Living with her mom who is a doctor, Gwen has opted for homeschooling due to her strong desire for seclusion, and to be at home where she feels safe without other kids to ridicule and bully her. She's highly misunderstood, smart as a whip, and doesn't even realize that she's most definitely love-worthy. Scott, not real thrilled about having to move to a small town after his dad inherits a couple businesses that he must keep open, doesn't think there could possibly be any real redeeming qualities in their new hometown, regarding his own life as a teen boy. But once he begins attending the small town high school, he quickly makes new friends and ends up on the football team. His teammates seemingly accept him without preamble, and before he knows it, they're all tight buddies. Strangely enough, I was totally pulled into the football action, even though I'm not a huge sports fan. It was the way in which Jaz relayed the details of the game and all the players as they played, that actually had my adrenalin pumping as I quickly read on to see the outcome. You'll find that life can, indeed, be fickle as you journey through some of your typical high school drama, a good amount of suspicious activity, some stalking, and plenty of other goings on to satisfy most readers and keep you reading - as I did - into the wee hours, to know what happens next. Jaz has managed to pull everyone and everything together in a surprisingly pleasant way. Now it's up to you to get your own copy and enjoy this light yet busy and exciting read as much as I did. The only thing left to say is that Jaz Primo has once again written a fabulous story in this, his first YA Paranormal novel. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

I wish you could give half stars on the ratings. I'd give this book a 3.7 actually. First, I like that it's from a male's POV and the one without the supernatural powers, too. So, I really liked that aspect. The story is original and well written. I would have liked to see a little more history about the reapers. I liked Scott, but had a hard time feeling connected to him. I think it was because he didn't seem to think like a typical teenage boy. His inner dialogue lacked just a little snark, ma I wish you could give half stars on the ratings. It was easy to ascertain why she was the way she was and her reactions to the events in her life were realistic. I really liked the relationship between Scott and Gwen as well. There are some good lessons in this book too. Teaching kids to think before they act. The music references add a great touch of pop culture. Over all I'd say this book is a great read for both girls AND boys. The football lingo helps balance out the romance. The ending was satisfying. I'm not sure if there will be a sequel; this story could stand alone or open up for another.

The love story between Scott and Gwen is adorable. Scott fell hard for Gwen and never came up. Gwen was one of the luckiest teens in the whole city to have Scott courting her, yet she still put him through the ringer constantly, making him almost beg for every tiny piece of herself until he almost dies for her. It's tragic. It's romantic. They were just teens in love. Except Gwen's not just a teen, she's also a Reaper and that apparently freaked the whole town out. But not Scott. Gwen was one of the luckiest teens in the whole city to have Scott courting her, yet she still put him through the ringer constantly, making him almost beg for every tiny piece of herself until he almost dies for her. He stuck by her no matter what anyone said. I loved it.

The story was amazing. I loved the plot of Gwen Reaper. I loved how Scott participated in all that was happening and how he and Gwen fell in love with each other. I liked the format of the book and hope to read more by Primo.

This was a good book I could have done with a little less football, but then I'm 60 reading YA books. For the audience it was meant for it is a great book that I have recommended to young people in my family. Jaz Primo's “Gwen Reaper” is just a sweet little coming-of-age story about a high school football player who moves to a small North Dakota town and a young lady who had lived there for some time. Oh, did I mention that the young lady had been in a multi-year funk after watching her brother and father die in a car crash, basically withdrawing from society and embracing home-school? And that she has a pet bulldog – and a pet alligator? And that she has a pet bulldog – and a pet alligator? And that the young lady has some sort of, uh, powers regarding the loss of life? I admit, I found the plot to be somewhat predictable (although the climax could have been building to alternate and opposite conclusions – it didn't become clear until I actually reached that point in the story.) So what – I found the plot to Cinderella to be rather predictable, as well, but that doesn't make IT any less of a classic for multiple generations! The important thing is that the characters are incredibly likeable, and I found myself rooting for them to succeed harder than I've rooted for any fictional characters in quite awhile. Furthermore, the pacing of the story was quite comfortable and – predictable or not – I found it difficult to put this novel down. I've wanted to read this novel for awhile, and found it worth the wait. I give it high recommendations. RATING: 4 1/2 stars, rounded up to 5 stars where 1/2 stars are not permitted.

Since I read some of his adult novels, I picked this one that is YA . It must be his skills at weaving a story because starting with Scott and going on from there I am at this new hometown of his. Being from a small place myself could relate very well so it was easy for this author to weave me into the story. Gwen is like most small town girls that keep to themselves they then become targets. This author will give a good story along with the innocence of young love with how it can build so sweetly. Sometimes those are the best to read in romance too being spiked with hope. The paranormal aspect was icing in this one with the elements that were combined with the storyline. I do so love how it wound its way into a delightful ending with me wishing there was more.

Gwen's loss has caused her to withdraw from small-town life. Then Scott moves in, disappointed to be leaving the big city. He and Gwen form a tentative friendship that builds into something more and small-town life isn't so bad for Scott. Until Gwen becomes a target.
