That really spoiled my entire reading experience. Which otherwise would have been a 4. Bummer. *pout* Oh! No HEA! I got all set for the HEA and there isn't one. Damn. Hmm, an interesting take on the Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson story, set in a post-apoclyptic 2010, where the loss of 98% of Earth's population was wiped out in a single (unexplained) event. Only those who were inside in windowless rooms or underground survived the event, so nobody really knows what happened. Only those who were inside in windowless rooms or underground survived the event, so nobody really knows what happened. Holmes is outside in the remains of London, trying to find evidence to solve a pre-event crime - not that it's of any use/relevance, but Holmes' inquiring mind can't let it rest - when he stumbles across John Watson. This Watson is not a bumbling fool, but rather a traumatized yet extremely capable Army doctor trying to survive by himself. Holmes eventually manages to persuade Watson to return with him to the Enclave, where the remains of the British government have gathered underground, including Holmes' brother, Mycroft, and Inspector Lestrade. Without giving away the story, the reader soon realizes that most of the main characters from Conan Doyle's story appear here, so the crime side of things comes as no real surprise. But even knowing that Holmes and Watson will become more than a crime-fighting duo (because it is slash fiction), the way it happens, and the end is a surprise. (I'm not saying anything else, but it wouldn't hurt to check which shelves I have added it to...)

It's the apocalypse and 98% of humanity has been killed. Sherlock's older brother Mycroft has taken what remains of the British government and created a seed colony in an underground bunker outside London. On the outside there is chaos and gangs are 'collecting' stray loners and making slaves of them. Sherlock is restless and goes scavenging in the ruins of London. He comes upon John Watson, who's been living on the streets by himself. He deduces immediately that John is an army doctor and tries It's the apocalypse and 98% of humanity has been killed. He comes upon John Watson, who's been living on the streets by himself. He deduces immediately that John is an army doctor and tries to recruit John for the enclave. However, John suspects Sherlock is a slave collector... Meanwhile, something else is going on. Mycroft's scouts are running into hostile forces. The collectors may be ganging up, with a new leader. This story is written with a sort of gritty dark humor and has an actual plot. Sherlock is emminently Sherlock. :) Mycroft is..kinda scary. John is adorable. As an aside, there are several stand-alone shorter Sherlock stories (not in this AU) by this author Archive of Our Own, and most of them are fabulous. Little bites of reading satisfaction. :) However, while the ending to The Prize was a good ending, I would really like to see a sequel - I want more!!!

I liked the worldbuilding, and I liked the continuity of "the three questions", but too many things were left unresolved. Also, no HEA, which isn't always a deal-breaker for me, but here it felt especially unfinished. This peek behind the curtain reveals an assortment of not-so-nice people, all with agendas and baggage who are often at cross purposes.
