Holzapfel’s book was a fast-paced, insightful book on the Suffering, Death, Resurrection, and Exaltation of Jesus Christ. It took me a while to get into it but overall, I came away with a greater understanding of the Passion of Christ. This book goes through the Passion narratives of each of the gospel authors. Going through the same story multiple times could be boring, but Holzapfel keeps the reader’s attention with new scholarly and spiritual insights. Holzapfel argues that not one gospel author can tell the whole story. He highlights the differences in audience, tone, and purpose of each gospel author. I would recommend taking the time to read this book as a companion to scripture. The historical and scholarly insights give light to the record of the Bible. It would be hard to read quickly because it is rich with new details. I recommend this book to Christians of any denomination, or people of another faith that have an interest in the events of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as accounted in the Bible. The author is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and gives a few insights based on modern-day scripture in the LDS faith, but it is still based on the Bible. He takes a pro-Semitic view of accusations against the Jews and defends their faith. Like I mentioned before, this book is pretty face-paced which makes for a slightly choppy read. I wish there was a bit more of a conclusion or a wrap up after each section. The commentary on each gospel ends rather abruptly. I would have appreciated more of a conclusion after each section in order to better tie together the themes of the book. The epilogue does however extend beyond the gospels to the Epistles when Peter writes a letter to the Saints. This gives a nice message of hope in Christ to all.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading A Lively Hope: The Suffering, Death, Resurrection, and Exaltation of Jesus Christ by Richard Neitzel Holzapfel. The book gives an in-depth synoptic study of the events leading up to Christ’s crucifixion, as well as his death and resurrection and is organized into two sections: The Suffering and Death of Jesus and The Raising of Jesus. Each looks at the events of Christ’s life one gospel at a time. I have learned so much by reading this book. Not only have I grown to better understand each gospel author and their perspective, but the deep historical analysis of the final moments of the Savior’s life has helped me grow closer to him and better understand his sacrifice and love. I especially appreciated the complement of the resurrection study following the study of Christ’s suffering. This emphasized the Savior’s love, mercy, and power. The title of the book is an excellent description of the Savior who is a lively hope for each of us.

I'm very tempted to give this a 5 star rating. It is a scholarly work but can be read by the non-scholar. It discusses in detail the "passion" of Christ from each of the four gospel writer's perspectives. I'm very tempted to give this a 5 star rating. This book was way over my head. I felt like I was drowning in confusion the whole time I was reading it. I think he was writing for his peers and contemporaries. It was way too hard and obtuse for me.

Such wonderful research and insights of Richard Neitzel Holzapfel. His testimony of the Savior is evident.
