A great new 2012 Halloween book! Catrow has taken the famous novelty song by Bobby Pickett and added the best illustrations ever to go along with the words. Plus the best thing, I now know all the words! This is a precious book any child (or adult growing up in the 60s) will want to have on their shelf. I've already sung the song so many times my cats disappear into another part of the house when they see me bring the book out! Poor little monster cats! A great new 2012 Halloween book! In this illustrated version of the classic novelty song, a mad scientist's monster performs a new dance which becomes "the hit of the land" when the scientist throws a party for other monsters. Cute illustrations accompany the infamous song. I have to admit that I skipped a few of the repeats while reading it.

This was an interesting read that my sister got for my niece from the library. Due to it is based off of the song by Bobby Pickett I just couldn't help but sing it in the voice or an attempted copy of the voice that is the narrator of the song while I told my sister she would have to do it herself if she were to read it to my niece. Her look was slightly skeptical at me lol. Anyway the illustrations were interesting to begin with. Her look was slightly skeptical at me lol. Anyway the illustrations were interesting to begin with. Although the mad scientist probably was a guy this book had a scientist who was a bit on the vague side so at one point it could have been a guy but at other points it looked to be a woman. And the most charming creature to watch was of course the cat with its adorable faces as it reminds me of our newest family member so now it will be a running joke that our kitten doesn't bunny-hop but is monster mashing. I didn't like the portrayal of the regular monsters such as Dracula and the Wolfman but they did fit the illustrations within the book. Cinderskelly seemed to make an appearance in the book and although they were a bit on the weirdly creepy side some of the other monsters caught our attention with their creativity. Just as the song really had no purpose but to have fun, so is the book. Children may eventually get to know some of the lyrics or you can play the music from the actual song instead of reading it then allow them to make up their own versions of the monster mash for Halloween as a way of getting them to exercise.

We love David Catrow's illustrations and we borrow as many of his books as we can find at our local library. This book is an interesting concept, taking the classic 1960s song and pairing it with fun, monster-filled illustrations. I sang the tune to our girls as we turned the pages, but I cannot help but think that we would have enjoyed the book so much better if we could've listened to an audio version of the song while we followed along with the book. For my goodreads friends with little kids who love to read holiday books, I have a new favorite this year: “Monster Mash”. The words are “Boris” Bobby Pickett’s from THE song, and the brilliant illustrations are by David Catrow. Yes, this song is 3-generations strong and is just as fun as it was when I was a kid in 1962. Absolutely a keeper on my Halloween story shelf for kids! 5-stars!

The zany and ghoulish illustrations created in pencil, watercolor, gouache, and ink take the lyrics of this song, first made popular way back in 1962, in a hilarious direction. Even some very plump rats get in on the fun as they dance about the laboratory, the graveyard, even on stage as the monsters form a band that includes Dracula. I can remember torturing my parents with this song while we were on a family vacation trip to Florida many decades ago. Gosh! This was fun and the illustrations are great. I can't wait to have my kids listen to the song while looking at the pictures. The monsters (not particularly the expected Frankenstein and Dracula-but the made-up scary guys) are very imaginative and got my kids laughing. For example, there is a monster dog that had around seven noses, three eyes, big, long ears and a silly grin. This is a great one to have around Halloween or any time you want to get their creative juices flowing while drawing mons This was fun and the illustrations are great. This was a big hit at storytime today. The audience of toddlers found the bright, bold illustrations totally mesmerizing and the parents laughed and smiled as they remembered the Boris Pickett hit that the text is based on. This book is great to read at Halloween. It is also a song so you can make it ito a fun activity near Halloween. You may allow students to sing along with you at the end of the day. If students are allowed to dress up for Halloween, you can sing this song and have a small party where they can dance to the song.

I'll be honest. David Catrow is my favorite illustrator. I love his colors, his dogs, skeletons, all of it. He has gone and put words to my favorite October song. So put the record on, and sing along to a bopping good read. I'll be honest. David Catrow is my favorite illustrator. I love his colors, his dogs, skeletons, all of it. The classic Halloween song gets the picture book treatment! A fun, non scary monster read to pull out for Halloween storytimes. Plus a bit of a nostalgic read for the parents (and probably some grandparents) in the crowd. And since it's almost impossible to read this without singing it... just go for it! Have your little monsters in the audience dance along too. Makes for a really fun storytime. The classic Halloween song gets the picture book treatment! However, the age group that would find the storyline entertaining (lower elementary) would likely not be able to read it by themselves. As a teacher I would need to read this book to the class. I could not find many teaching concepts to extract from the book, but I would use it as a basis for fun halloween music/art activities. The potential for incorporating fun activities in connection with this book makes it appealing to young kids who are energetic and creative. To get the most out of the book I would buy it in digital format and go through it with the music like it were a music video (something that certainly appeals to kids). The kids could learn some dance moves and dance in their Halloween costumes during the chorus. To incorporate art I would have them find a rock to transform into a pet rock monster with acrylic paints, using the pictures from the book for inspiration. Incorporating fun activities with reading gives children a love for books early on. This book is perfect for that!

“Monster Mash” by David Catrow is an excellent book for pre-school students. This book heightens a child’s creativity with a catchy song. The book is a song for the Halloween Holidays about monsters’ and ghost. The different characters are getting together to sing and have a good time. They dance and sing throughout the streets and in the beginning only a couple of monsters are joining in. This book was a fun book to share with kids be for Halloween and to share the song with them. This book pretty much is the famous song the Monster Mash. This book also has some great illustrations and kids love to just look at the pictures. I also found it funny that you end up just singing the book to kids when you read it aloud. I would suggest this book to anyone with small kids or to someone who would like to share this song with the younger kids that haven't heard this song. Catrow, D.
