I only read The Murders in the Rue Morgue - by Edgar Allen Poe. I read it as part of Soho Press's read along since I'm not versed on crime novels at all. This felt almost exactly like a Sherlock Holmes story, except it was written well before Sherlock. It had the same quirky amateur detective with the nerdy side kick who can solve any crime through deduction before the incapable police. The only part that was extremely hard to get through was the opening philosophical rant. I really liked the so I only read The Murders in the Rue Morgue - by Edgar Allen Poe. Being it's Poe i was expecting something strange and he didn't disappoint me. I actually liked this story better than a Study in Scarlet, which is the next book on Soho's list (and I had only read that because of the great BBC series Sherlock). This is a great fast read.

I read only two of these short stories, the two Poe stories, and the world's first obvious detective stories. The Murders in the Rue Morgue shows off the kind of reasoning that would lead to Sherlock Holmes (and is copied by ACD in one of the stories) - The Murder of Marie Roget is less well known, based on a real crime in New York. I enjoyed re-reading them both, bur wasn't tempted to go on to the other stories - I began 'The Black Cat' with my own black cat purring in my lap, got to his taking I read only two of these short stories, the two Poe stories, and the world's first obvious detective stories. I was reminded of these stories by a biography I watched, emphasising Poe's upbringing as a Southern gentleman. I was surprised how early his dates were - he died in 1849 - and the biography left me wanting to find and read a more detailed modern biography of him.
