Break obviously has come to care for Sharon, so much more than he himself realizes...and he can never look upon her again. And this ballroom scene, it broke my heart. He realizes he needs to tell her, after faking his blindness, and when he does, he fears it will cause her anguish...and yet, it plays out so beautifully. Elliot accepts Oz as his friend, and shares a touching moment with Oz, while Leo faces his own monsters in the background. And to lighten the mood, Alice and Oz have a moment on the dancefloor. Pandora Hearts is going to ruin me should anything more happen to my characters. I proudly admit to crying during Break and Sharon's moment. I was dreading it, knowing it had to happen...and it was so bittersweet.

Even if you are walking different paths, individuals continue to be linked together." [changed the quote] At the moment, I'm giving this four stars, though it should really be more like four and a half. There's so much in this volume to like/love that I feel like I should give it five stars anyway. I can't even describe what about this feels off. I'll see if I can manage it after I do some general rambling first. This volume's theme is "growing up". Eventually, the innocent children we were give way to creatures who know. What I love about this manga is that Oz isn't the only one going through these transitions. We start with Vincent, of all people. Now, here I have to say that I still think he's twisted and evil and miserable and I don't care how awful his life was when he was a kid. Gil went through the same garbage and he still has a good soul in him. However, with Mochizuki, you never know. The character you're praising today could be the one who slits another character's throat tomorrow. The innocent child who blushes whenever she gets the attention of a handsome gentleman, could turn out to have a taste for torture and the occult. And it seems that vice versa can also be true. Even though I've only softened a little toward Vincent by knowing his past, I can't help but smile at the glimmer of redemption Mochizuki has given him. (view spoiler)[Yes, after this chapter, I can't ship AdaXGil anymore. It just wouldn't be right. I think Ada would scare Gil. O_O Not only that, but Mochizuki has put Ada and Vincent together too often, and with this current twist I wouldn't be surprised at their relationship developing into something that might actually inspire him to change. Once he's gotten over the shock, lol. (hide spoiler)] Gil's brief discussion with his brother also shows that Gil has done some thinking as well, and is trying to form a more mature and stable relationship with his brother. I loved the look on Vincent's face afterward. I hope he takes Gil up on his offer before too long. Lady Sharon also shows that she's maturing emotionally. She's become stronger and more self-sufficient. She doesn't need anyone protecting her from ugly truths anymore, especially Break. It's fascinating to see how he handles it. (view spoiler)[I really loved the scene on the balcony when he confesses to her that he can't see. That was so well-written/drawn, I choked up. (hide spoiler)] Elliot, too, has begun to look at what he was taught and what's real. His participation is turning him into a character to admire. And, of course, Oz has begun to play games at the level of the Great Dukes. His intelligence manages to get Pandora inside the mansion of the foreigner, Isla Yura. Can I stop for a sec and give a warning here? Isla Yura is the freakiest thing in this manga so far. That's right, folks. I'm saying he's freakier than missing eyes, cut-up human organs, sadism, insanity, chains, and spells that tattoo how much time you have left in this world on your chest. He tops all of that. Anyway, yes, growth. I'm really thrilled with how this story is progressing. And if I say anything more there will be major spoilers. So why not give it five stars? I think it's because this volume tries to get back to a light-hearted tone and tries a little too hard at times. The story tends to jerk around a bit as a result. It's not too jarring, but still, it's there. Introducing Isla Yura....Sometimes, when an author introduces a foreign element, it really adds to the story. Fullmetal Alchemist gained a lot of depth with the foreigners that got tangled up in the plot. I'm hoping the same things happens here, but at the moment, Isla Yura feels too much like a plot device, not a character with true depth. I trust that will change as the series progresses. And finally, the scene where Oz, Break and Co. try to infiltrate Barma's residence felt like Mochizuki had no idea how to get certain characters together, so she kind of slapped some elements together to get something by her deadline. That sounds harsh, but I'm pretty sympathetic, actually. That scene, and the tea party that kind of comes from nowhere and feels a little forced, are only two out of many, many amazing scenes in this volume. And now I have to wait two months until I can buy volume #13. :(

They truly have more in common than they realize and the whole group held a beautiful garden tea party –if only to give us a little bit of breathing. Later on, the group convinces Yura, a weird looking guy who’s obsessed with Jack Vessalius, to held a coming-to-age party (like Oz had when he turned 15) in order to gain information about the Abyss, the Tragedy of Sablier and all its consequences. Oz takes advantage of Yura’s obsession and makes himself a target to the Baskervilles, who want nothing but to repeat what happen 100 years ago. But apparently, not everything is what it seems… This volume contains Retrace 46 – 49. Read it for the #MiniMangaReadathon. So much good stuff going on in this volume. The first half was a bit annoying because it featured the two characters I really can't stand: Ada and Vincent. But the second half was great. Break finally told Sharon about his eyes, Elliot is warming up, and we're getting closer to finding out who the Headhunter is. I'm satisfied. So much good stuff going on in this volume. And it's always nice to get more backstory/information about Oz. So far the actions of this father are very contradictory, he replaced his son with another kid but chooses to aggressively hate it later on? We surely need more information about him haha. To sum up, this volume was pretty solid, I liked it more than the one before. The cliffhanger is very exciting too. Alice's and Oz' dance was so god damn cute. (view spoiler)[If you weren't a fan of Ada before, you undoubtedly will come to adore her now. I love her freaky deaky side. (hide spoiler)] This volume is equally suspenseful as it is silly. It kept me laughing with all of the crazy antics, especially those causing Oz great embarrassment, all while building my intense anticipation for the next volume. All of the new mysteries have me very intrigued, particularly the ones that hint at Oz's birth. I also have this sneaking suspicion about Leo. I could be wrong, but I'm wondering if he is somehow (view spoiler)[tied to the Cheshire Cat (hide spoiler)] . Not only is this volume highly entertaining, it has so much emotion that it even melted my icy little black heart. When Oscar throws a tea party, Oz reflects about Oscar's attachment to his special camera. It is a bittersweet backstory that will make you want to give ol' Uncle Oscar a big hug. I think part of why I now love this series is the amazing friendships the characters share and the unfailing loyalties they have for one another. I can't get enough of the dynamic between Oz and Elliot. Somehow, Oz's eternal optimism is well-matched to Elliot's grumpy demeanor. Whenever these two share a page, it delights me to no end. Also, Reim's delivering of tough love to the almighty Break always makes me mushy. The women actually steal the spotlight in this volume. From Ada's revelations to Alice's ever-increasingly adorableness (I just love that she's always half asleep, eating, or wanting to be eating) to Sharon's tenacity, the girls absolutely kick ass. Too often, girls in manga, especially shôjo, are portrayed as weepy, helpless victims (I'm talking to you, Misao), but not in this series. The girls are tough, don't need to be saved, and actually do some of the saving. Thank you, very much. Sharon's reaction of Break's news is one of the best moments in the series. Jun Mochizuki is a true master of her craft. Admittedly, I was slow to get on the Pandora Hearts bandwagon, but I am now a convert. She creates an intricate world of secrets, and I love how she puts her characters through the paces so much that it borderlines on torture. One thing I never doubted, however, is her ridiculously insane artistry. Just look at the gorgeous cover. Although her beautiful drawings are impressive, I have a special weakness for the panels of the characters drawn as chibis. So cute. I am so excited to pick up the next volume. I'm looking forward to finding out more details on the creepy squealing fanboy, Isla Yura and his part in the stone seals.

Who is the real 'Oz Vesallius'? Does he live, or is he dead? Are his eyes of emerald and his hair of gold? Or does he take on a plainer appearance with hair of chocolate and perhaps eyes to match? What was his childhood like? Did he grow up in the slums or the city? Was he in an orphan....age..? Leo... Or does he take on a plainer appearance with hair of chocolate and perhaps eyes to match? What was his childhood like? Did he grow up in the slums or the city? Was he in an orphan....age..? Leo... Leo's the same age as Oz, and was at Fiona's orphanage. Xai Vesallius took the boy away from everyone; then, everyone present for the child's birth disappeared. It couldn't have been his birthday being different, that's not big enough to raise suspicions... No, the answer lies here: red eyes. Red eyes are those of a child of misfortune; Xai would have felt ashamed having a red eyed baby in his family, so he stole him away, had all the staff and the mother killed. He went to Fiona's House and swapped him for a baby with the green eyes. Leo's backstory was never explained, so this could be it! But that doesn't explain why Xai refuses to acknowledge his 'child''s existance. Did he only realize after the fact that he was a descendant of Jack? He's working with the Nightrays, so maybe he needed the child for a reson related to that, but there was bad blood between him and Jack? It's a mystery to me; he got rid of the red eyes, so why the need to shun his new one? Other notes: I especially dislike Isla Yura. He's creepy and I have to restrain myself from punching him in the gut constantly. He owns Sablier, or at least part of it, correct? That would mean he also owns the orphanage. Six children had died so far, and that was his doing? What for? And why are the children so happy? Did he figure out a way to physically remove certain emotions from their brains and some ended up dying with experimentations or mistakes? Hm... that seems plausible... but then why is Phillippe at the social party? Why did Isla bring him there? Does he want to investigate Oz's brain to see what influence Jack has on it and Phillippe's bait to lure him away? The last thing I have now is a seed in my stomach growing twisted vines, wrapping itself over again and again because Reim-san was left with that girl, Lily. I know he'll probably be careful, but he's also very prone to anxiety sputters/spasms. He could give away information if he's not careful, or maybe be held hostage. Why Reim? It's upsetting to find a favorite character of mine in danger...

It is a pretty slow paced manga with each chapter at close to 50 pages and only about half of them moving the story forward so that we learn more about the night 100 years ago and the Abyss and now we have another story line with Leo and the orphanage. It just seems like there is so much happening but we aren't getting any answers. I hope that the Queen of Hearts story line gets resolved rather quickly and gives us the information we need to try to figure out what is going on in the overall story. Also, every time we see a character that has shown up only a couple times before, I swear it's only so we don't forget them. They don't actually add anything when they do show up or at least they RARELY do. Like why was Echo included? To show us that maybe she is still Noise rather than Echo? To remind us that she exists? What purpose did she play? I think if it weren't for Break I probably would have stopped reading this after three chapters. *shrugs* but I am nothing if not a loyal fangirl. The art is really fantastic in this series. Every time I read this series, I am struck by how detailed and gorgeous the artwork is. I always feel transported into the rich gothic world of Pandora Hearts. Highly recommended.
