I enjoy thoroughly Mercade's exegetical style - employing intuition and logic equally to uncover the difficult esoteric side of Shakespeare's works character by character and step by step. With that said, I disagree with his analysis. To Mercade, Hamlet is a historical account (which uses "time" as its basis for unfolding, as if one could write a play whose plot unfolds outside of time) of the human desire for truth (Hamlet) conquering error (Claudius) and its supports. Not only does Mercade make I enjoy thoroughly Mercade's exegetical style - employing intuition and logic equally to uncover the difficult esoteric side of Shakespeare's works character by character and step by step. Not only does Mercade make Shakespeare out to be a Protestant scientific positivist in his criticism, he ventures to suggest England symbolizes scientific thinking generally, and then compares Hamlet to the works of Voltaire and their meaning (ha!). I doubt this very much, but I do think Mercade comes within range of Shakespeare's mark in this title. Fortunately, Mercade saves face in the appendix, wherein he explains that he may be wrong, but he is certain that Hamlet is symbolic of some facet of the history of humanity, and I'm quite certain he's right.
